Pride 31 - Hammer House

February 27th, 2006 | by Dr J

Mark ColemanDon’t know if you all remember this, but a certain someone thought that Mark Coleman would have a great shot at beating Shogun at Pride 31. This Pride card actually turned out to be very exciting and entertaining. There were quite a few “upsets” so to speak and some interesting “after-hours” activities. Call it a lucky win, call it what you want… Coleman defeated Shogun and now things are going to be very interesting for Pride FC.

First off, let’s how Shogun’s injuries weren’t too severe. Hopefully it was just a simple dislocated elbow and not something else much larger. Regardless of the injury, Shogun has lost his first fight at heavyweight. Where does he stand now in the heavyweight rankings and on the contender ladder to have a shot at Fedor? Looks like with the Shogun loss and Mark Hunt’s victory, Hunt is definately next up to fight Fedor.

Here is a link to the video of the Coleman vs. Rua fight. You can’t see too much of the post-brawl action, but if you can stand a shaky camera and are looking for some of the “aftermath” check out this video.

In some of the other fights, Alistair Overeem defeated a much larger oponent, Sergey Kharitonov, by TKO in the first round. Overeem really dominated this fight and Kharitonov looked lost at times. Pedro Rizzo was stopped in 25 seconds by Roman Zentsov. Looks like Rizzo’s career is pretty much over. Rampage was able to win the final fight of his Pride contract against Yoon Dong Sik, although it took all three rounds and a unanimous decision for the victory. Both Noguera and Josh Barnett were able to stay on track and defeated their oponents, while Mario Sperry was TKO’d by Kosaka Tsuyoshi in a “flying fists” type of fight.

Overall, it was a very exciting night of MMA action.

I am a 24 year old MMA fan from ICELAND(yeah u read me right… Iceland(north of Ireland, east of Greenland) look it up!
Mark Coleman, U the man! I will admit I have never been a particularly big fan of Mark Coleman nor his fighting style(ground and pound) but then again I haven´t been following MMA for that long and I haven´t seen that many fights with “the Hammer”. But watching PRIDE 31 and seeing the post PRIDE 31 interview with “the Hammer” I must say that I have a lot of respect for the man. I have always had respect for him as a fighter and what he has done in the fight game, but seeing his reaction in the ring(heat of the moment people, remember heat of the moment) and his reaction in the interview right after the fight and then also the post PRIDE 31 interview, made me realize that he is not just a great fighter(regardless of age) but a great man. His acknowledgment of the Chute box reaction to the “situation” was a mark of a man that can take a step back and look at the “situation” and see that what transpired in the ring was a “heat of the moment thing” that happens when fighters are in “fight mode” and family is family. Chute Box reacted to the “situation” in the ring and Hammer House reacted to the “situation” in the ring - Period! I´m not saying a aprove of what happened in the ring but that I understand why it happened.
Watching PRIDE 31 I did not lose any respect for Chute nor Hammer Hosue, but I gained a much deeper respect for Mark Coleman. You proved that you still got what it takes and you are a force to be reckoned with in MMA.
Respect from ICELAND!
