Silva vs. Vera

April 11th, 2006 | by Dr J

Assuerio SilvaI know UFC 59 is this weekend, but its never to early to look ahead to UFC 60 and some of the matchups that will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. I received word this morning from Assuerio Silva’s PR person that he has officialy signed to fight Brandon Vera at UFC 60.

Since Tim Syliva, who is fighting Andre Arlovski for the Heavyweight title this Saturday, had his last fight against Assuerio Silva, I think its a good time to discuss this matchup. Tim Sylvia won a unamimous decision against Assuerio at Ultimate Fight Night 3. I think it was a good fight and if Sylvia had not cheated and grabbed the cage to prevent a takedown, he easily could have lost due to submission. Instead, the “Maine-iac” was able to “hold on” (literally) and prevent the takedown and ultimately win the fight.

That brings us to Brandon Vera, who seems to be one of the rising “golden boys” in the UFC. Vera only has 6 fights on his MMA career, and hasn’t lost yet. His last three fights were wins over Mike Whitehead, Fabiano Scherner, and Justin Eilers - not exactly the toughest of competition. Silva, on the other hand, has fought all over including Pride and Bushido victories. I look for Silva to take down Vera early on in the fight and secure a submission victory. “The Truth” Vera still has a way to go before he can fufill his predictions of being the first UFC champion at both heavyweight and light heavyweight concurrently.
