Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva

Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva

All I can say is… Miracles do happen. This is what the MMA community has been wanting for about 2 years. I’m glad UFC President Dana White and Pride FC President Sakikabara were finally able to bury their differences and setup a true “world championship” fight.

Zack Arnold has a good article on the benefits, or lack of benefits, that this matchup presents for both the UFC and Pride FC.

I cannot believe this is actually going to happen. Liddell BETTER beat Babalu or else **** will hit the fan. I am very excited and have been waiting a long time for this fight. Excellent work Mr. White and Sakikabara.

Comment by Ivan Trembow about 2 years, 6 months ago

Based on the article from Pride, it seems like they are approaching this just like any other “interpromotional war” type of scenario. They could benefit greatly in the U.S. if Silva were to beat Liddell. But how is any of this going to benefit Pride’s live attendance in Japan?

Also, the wording in the translation is very interesting… “[Sakakibara] says his and Vanderlei’s purpose in coming to the UFC is to take Chuck’s belt and make Silva the ‘first Pride/UFC double champion in history.’”

That wording just indicates that Wanderlei could be a double champion, but it doesn’t say anything about Wanderlei’s Pride belt being on the line in the UFC.

silva is a no pain all game hardcore bad ***, the ice man is gonna melt like a little kids popscicle when silva busts his melon. rock on silva!!!!

Comment by Walt K about 2 years, 5 months ago

its too bad majority of americans don’t know the superiority of pride fighters over ufc. many prior ufc fighters have tried their luck in pride and found out quickly that pride is the “major league” of mma. chuck liddell got pummelled by quinton jackson in pride. jackson got ko’d twice by the “axe murderer” wanderlei silva.

silva has the hardest chin (never been ko’d), aggression of a wild dog, violence of action that is unmatched by anyone, excellent strikes, and extreme power.

liddell seems to have better boxing-punching skills than silva, but one has to question his chin as he has been ko’d by courture and quinton jackson.

Comment by Eric F about 2 years, 5 months ago

Silva is the 2nd best fighter in the world. Only to fedor who is the best by a very wide margin. Who no one can argue. That is the fight i really want to see. Chuck liddell is an out of shape joke, who will be introduced in november to a whole lot of pain. how did anderson silvas octagon debut fare out???? The same as the axe murderers will.I cant wait to see what dana white will say after!!!!

Comment by Dr J about 2 years, 5 months ago

I don’t think anyone considers Liddell to be an “out of shape joke.”

Comment by Eric F about 2 years, 5 months ago

when i say out of shape, i mean he will gas early just like he did in pride against overeem, rampage.

when i say joke,,,, i mean the ufc in general. they pin everything on liddell, and tought him as the best in the world when really hes about the 4th best fighter in his division.

Comment by Dr J about 2 years, 5 months ago

I agree with you somewhat. I don’t think Liddell has the best cardio out there, but this fight will take place in the UFC, meaning UFC rules. When he fought in Pride he had to fight a 10 minute first round instead of 5 minute rounds. I think that had a lot to do with his gassing out against Rampage.

And, yes, the UFC is a joke in general with how they handle a lot of their promotion and dealing with the media. But until fights like this take place, there is no way to rank fighters across divisions. After the Wandy vs Liddell fight (if Chuck can get past Babalu - big IF) then we will see where fighters really stand in the LHW division.

Comment by Eric F about 2 years, 5 months ago

good points, but chuck cant handle getting pressed by someone as relentless as silva. silva will be on a mission to seek and destroy. All that aside, the fight probably wont happen because I have a bad feeling that sobral will beat chuck. Everybody is looking past sobral like hes nothing and i think chuck is too. I know chuck is probably looking ahead to silva and i think that will be his downfall. Also i think chucks last fight against forrest, he did not look to good.

Comment by Dr J about 2 years, 5 months ago

I think Babalu will beat Chuck too. In fact, I wrote about it a few days ago.

Also, Chuck’s last fight was against Randy Couture, not against Forrest Griffin; he’s never fought Griffin.

Comment by Eric F about 2 years, 5 months ago

sorry i meant vernon white. and it wasnt his actual last fight i know. I got mixed up with another blog earlier with vernon forrest.lol

Walt said that Wanderlei has never been KO’d. Not true. Vitor Belfort knocked him out in 44 seconds. However, I believe Silva is the best MMA fighter in the world, and certainly the most aggressive. This fight will end in the first round by KO. Whoever gets the first bone-jarring punch to the jaw will win. I say Chuck’s chances of winning are about 2 in 5.

The fight will be fun to watch!!!

Comment by daDude about 2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah,
I agree, I honestly belive Silva will beat Liddell in the first round by KO. Chuck don’t have the experience Silva got. Also, that Belfort victory over Silva happened back in 1998, Silva got unbelievably better since then. I think his record at sherdog since his loss to Belfort, is impressive and speaks for itself. Unlike Liddell, Silva will fight anyone, not just fighters in his weight class. I just believe that if Hunt couldn’t KO Silva, there is no way Liddell can. I think Liddell will get his wake up call when Silva takes his belt in November. This fight must happen so the world who don’t know Silva will understand how skilled he is. Silva also has to settle two more scores: one with Ortiz, who is too full of himself to understand his weaknesses, and the last one with Belfort. Silva today, is not the fighter he beat back in 1998. I can’t wait to see Silva take the Light Heavyweight belt from Liddell to be the first fighter in MMA history to hold a belt at the same time in two organizations. Take care.

Chuck Lidell will beat Silva!!!
Just Kidding, silva is if not the best, he is close to be,. Pride is the major leagues, meanwhile, ufc is lost in “what we are” and “what do we do”, since they are becoming a reality tv show more than a fight Cia. they stop creating good fighters as tito ortiz, ken shamrock, frank S, matt hughes, etc, and started to make reality tv stars. ufc should think what its doing and what it wants to be.

Comment by Jim about 2 years, 4 months ago

At least the UFC is seeding new fighters. This is important, because the average age of all MMA fighters has got to be 35 (just a guess).

Comment by Dr J about 2 years, 4 months ago

Not sure where you get 35 from? I would think the average age would be closer to 26-29.

Comment by Jim about 2 years, 4 months ago

Is this fight going to happen???

After the Liddell-Sobral fight, they mentioned little about Liddell fighting Silva, and Tito Ortiz jumped into the ring hyping a rematch. It seems that the UFC is starting to downplay the Liddell-Silva fight.

Oh, for those who did not watch it, Liddell handed Babalu’s *** to him.

Comment by Dr J about 2 years, 4 months ago

This fight is pretty much not going to happen. Silva is fighting in October in Pride, and Dana has stated that he is having problems getting something worked out with DSE management. Search the archives on MMAHQ.com and you will see I made a post about the problems with the fight.

Silva will not beat chuck
All chuck has to do to win this fight is fight like chuck liddell. He is very agressive . Silvas game plan will be to get in side and stand up with chuck . chuck is going 2 circle around him and bash in the side of his face. silva will make the mistake of trying to stand up with chuck and we all know what happens when stand up in frount of chuck liddell. night night silva night night.

well i think WANDY can’t take Chuck’s punch.. Chuck is improving his cardio each and every fight. We see it each time he fights.. Wandy has very good def in the ground and we’ll see if he can take chuck down there

Comment by bvrasp about 2 years, 3 months ago

man, honestly, either one of these guys could end the fight in a split second, this would be a crazy kickboxing style fight. I really want this fight to happen! obviously its not gonna be this year.. but its such a great matchup! i can just imagine the low kicks in this one heheh nasty!

Comment by MMAFANATIC about 2 years, 3 months ago

Well… it’s been clearly stated that this fight between Silva/Liddell will not happen. (BOOOO to the management of both sides) The stakes are to great for either side to come to an agreement. That being said the rematch between Quinton Jackson and Liddell has been slated as a substitute. Personally I belive that Jackson is a fresher talent and had enuff raw ability to beat Liddell in 2 rounds in Japan. Granted the rules are not the same, but 15min of fighting is 15min of fighting anyway u cut it. If both fighters *** out swinging it will be first round KO Jackson… if it goes the distance I think Liddell will win via decision.(it wont go the distance) Lets hope these UFC/Pride guys get their **** together and have a champion vs champion bout b4 Liddell/Silva die of old age.

if they fight like PRIDE…
sorry
but Liddell doesn’t have ANY chance…

Comment by hotpad about 2 years, 2 months ago

for those that thought strongly that babalu would beat liddell, are you still certain that wandy would pummel liddell? you guys clearly underestimate the guy. given wandy is one of the best, so is liddell. i think its funny that liddell is being dismissed partly because of the way things have been going at ufc. chuck is chuck. he is a bad-***, and a devastating striker. i am not gonna slap a guarantee (like some of you) on it and say he will win, cause silva is a top contender and definatly one of the toughest, but there is a good chance chuck will lay him out. KO’d.

Comment by corey about 2 years ago

lemme tell y’all something. i love the ufc, been watching it since ufc 1 and i love pride. the ufc has nothing withstanding what pride brings. pride encourages fighters to kill the other one, they want no wins except knockouts. and really noone cares about the stakes between the 2 orginizations. silva would kill liddell in any fight. he can’t stand up with silva and he’d be too proud of his punching ability to do anything but… but silva could take a few hits from a sledgehammer to the face and still not fall. there’s no man that can mess with silva point blank… if you actually wanna see a good fight, lets see fedor vs. silva, that’d actually be a good match up. chuck wont’ get past tito this time.

I just read on the UFC and MMA weekly web sites that the UFC has bought WFA (World Fighting Alliance). Seems that Dana and the boys are serious about taking over MMA promotion in the US. It was stated that they would still probably hold competitions under the WFA name but they would be used more for testing up and coming tallent before they premier on the big show. On Crocop’s official site he discussed the offers he has been recieving from Pride and the UFC and said the UFC has put a better offer in front of him that he is seriously considering. With these being confirmed Dana and co. may be holding to their word of trying to get the best fighters available in 07. Only time will tell.

Comment by Magoo about 2 years ago

Well the Liddell vs. Tito fight is done, anyone want to revise their opinion of Liddells chances against Silva? I havent seen anyone talk about the main weapon on Silva, the knees. He uses punches to set up the Tai clinch and then drop knees. Lets think, who was known as one of the best clinch guys in MMA (even if not the Tai clinch)… Couture. Liddell was able to shrug off the clinch, circle, and punch out the majority of the time. If you keep out of a prolonged clinch with Silva, you take away his most devistating weapon. Any fight with Liddell and Silva will be decided with that. If Silva cannot maintain a clinch and him Liddell with multiple knees, several times during the fight, he wont be able to beat Liddell. Also, many of Liddells win are with punches thorwn while his opponent is being too aggressive and coming in wildly. This is exactly what Silva does. Dont get me wrong, Silva is an amazing fighter. I just think that without a sustained Tai clinch, he cant beat Liddell. That is what won the fights for him against Jackson, and thats the only way he could beat Liddell. Until one of them is defeated though I just dont think this will happen. What is the benefit of sending your champion to fight in another MMA league? There is none, so unless one CLEARLY becomes dominate over the other I dont think it will happen, sadly.

one more thing, the difference between Pride and UFC is simple, its wrestling backgrounds. Many of the Pride fighters have trouble with a fighter with a wrestling backgrounds due to a lack of tackdown defense. There are exceptions, Silva (sometimes), Fedor, etc. I watch both PPVs and they are fairly even. Heavyweight goes to Pride, no question. UFCs heavyweight stinks. 205 lbs is a draw. The champs are easily 1 and 2 in the world. 185 lbs would go to UFC, Franklin and now A. Silva. 170 lbs, UFC without question. GSP on top and Hughes are the best. 155 lbs is better in Pride, but UFC is making a strong case to bring that one back up quickly. Especially with BJ Penn droping to 155 lbs, where he is trully no joke.

Comment by MMAFANATIC about 1 year, 12 months ago

No, i can’t really say I wanna retract my earlier statement that Silva would work Liddell… simply because he would. Silva would just hack him down with leg kicks and knees, Liddell wouldn’t be able to close in on Wanderlei like he did Tito and Randy, it would be ugly. Quinton Jackson took Liddell in 2 rounds in Pride. Wanderlei Silva has legitamately KO’d Quinton Jackson twice. Quinton went toe to toe with Liddell and beat him at his own game, and still has many years to improve his game. Jackson vs. Liddell 2 will be a great fight to watch to say the least. Also the 6 fight 2 year deal the UFC got with Mirko Cro Kop is wicked. Sylvia is gonna get head kicked which is great… it about time we get some finishers in the UFC heavyweight division. I don’t care what anybody says a standup heavyweight fight should not go the distance, the last few were let downs.

Double check your Jackson information Magoo… Liddell lost that fight :/. Thats why he is so anxious to have the rematch because it is his only unavenged loss.

Comment by richard about 1 year, 12 months ago

but to get liddel in the clinch u would have to go through chucks punches and if one catches then silva is going to sleep plain and simple as much as a one dimensional fighter chuck is u cant deny that of all the dimensions u could have he has the best

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 12 months ago

HEY YALL ANYONE EVER NOTICE HOW NASTY LOOKING AND UGLY SILVA IS.. MAN ID BE SCARED TO FIGHT HIM CUZ OF THAT…!!!!!!!!

Comment by Magoo about 1 year, 12 months ago

yeah i wasnt real clear when i said that. I meant that Silva won the fight with Jackson because of a long clinch and a lot of knees. What I was saying is that I dont think Silva would be able to do that same thing against Liddell. With that (Silvas best weapon) out of the way, I think that Liddell would win the fight.

we cant talk about who beat who. Silva beat Jackson, Jackson beat Liddell. Liddell beat Tito, Tito beat Silva. All that doesnt matter, they are both different fighters now.

I see a few things that work in Liddells favor. Sivlas over aggression for one. He comes in with his face forward, never a good idea against an excellent striker. Also, when he gets stunned he tends to try to swing his way out of it with his head down for 3-4 of the punches. As Griffin showed in this last event, that will catch up to you with a good striker. No, im not putter Griffin at Silvas level (not even close), but they both have the same bad habit. Another is that Silva REALLY relys on the clinch and knees to defeat his tougher apponents. If Liddell can stay out of the long clinch, that takes away the best weapon Silva has. I believe Liddell would be able to stay out of a long clinch and the knees wouldnt be a factor. As said before the odds of Silva having to eat several good shots when coming in is high in my estimation.

That being said there is a lot going for Silva. Liddell holds his hands wide, leaving a straight punch open for a good striker, which Silva is. He is also one of the few fighters that could take 2-3 pin point shots from Liddell. So he would have to follow up the first dead on shot with others, somehting he doesnt usually have to do.

Bottom line is this. They are the 2 best there is at 205 lbs, (followed by Jackson and “Shogun” Hua in my opinion) and no one knows what would happen. I think you could even throw out the result of the first time they fight (if ever). The nerves and the odds of one getting a lucky shot are too high to end it with that, no matter who wins. What they need is a 3 fight combo to settle it.

And college football would be better with a 8 team playoff, baseball would be better without the DH, basketball would be better if they enforce the traveling rule again, and any other sports dream of mine that will never happen.

HOLY CRAP do I hope Cro Cop drops Sylvia sometime this next year. That has to be why they brought Cro Cop over. They know he is a WEAK champ and they are looking for someone to take him out. Everyone hates him, the fans boo when he wins, and he cant carry an event alone as the main event. You know they hate him as champ. That guy is the biggest pretender of a champ there is in MMA.

Sorry for the novels. Im a chemical engineer, so I have NO ONE to talk MMA with that really has a clue, so I tend to go crazy when I actually get the chance to talk about it.

Comment by MMAFANATIC about 1 year, 12 months ago

No worries m8. As for the Liddell vs. Jackson match I guess we’ll c what happens. I think we can all bet the farm on Mirko, I would actually rather see Arlovski vs. Cro Cop think it would be more exciting than Sylvia. I do feel a lil pitty for Timmy but he has such an unfair advantage its sick. That Monson vs. Slvia match was sad to watch. What kinda chances are you giving Brandon Vera? Personally i liked his chances better in Lightheavyweight… well that is until the signed jackson LOL. But i think he is just to lil for sylvia, clinching maynot be an effective weapon on him.

Comment by Davemmafan about 1 year, 11 months ago

#5 Wanderlei Silva is a supreme fighter but he HAS been KO’d by Cro Cop. Not only was he KO’d but Cro Cop destroyed him. I’ve never seen Wanderlei layed out on his back bloodied up like that ever!

Comment by Roel about 1 year, 11 months ago

first of all pride is better than ufc. Anderson Silva was an average pride fighter and he demolished and made it seem that the undefeated Franklin was an amateur figther. And by the way Wanderlei Silva beat Rampage “twice” both by thai clinch but he got the clinch after he landed a couple of bombs. Liddell couldn’t take the punishment against Rampage and threw in the towel. If you want to see a good fight its not between pride and ufc, its between champions in pride. If you think Liddell is such a good fighter you got another thing coming. And another thing Crocop and Hunt both beat Wanderlei but look at the damn weight difference, Liddell will **** his pants as soon as he steps into the ring with either fighter. If a fighter wants to prove himself they should fight the best and the best are in Pride. Fedor could demolish any ufc fighter thats put in front of him. ufc is a joke and in order to prove themselves they should make a pride vs. ufc champion with champion.

Comment by Magoo about 1 year, 11 months ago

no matter who is better the simple fact is that they are all slowly coming to the UFC. Pride cant compete with the money anymore. Its over for Pride. They have about 5-7 years left, thats it. Pride is 4-5 fighers away from being AAA.

If you think W. Silva would walk through Liddell, then you dont know MMA very much and you are just showing your ignorance. Liddell is 5 times the fighter he was when Rampage beat him, much like W. Silva is compared to when Tito destroyed him… did you forget about that one? you make it sound like Liddell wouldnt land anything. no figher has been able to stand up to a liddell punch that lands square for the past 3 years. W. Silva has a great chin, but he would have to be more careful with Liddell. 2 or 3 of them and it doesnt matter who you are, you’re gonna start stumbling. Liddell is the best in the world about smelling blood, going for the kill, and finishing.
The dream 205 lbs tourney… Shogun Rua, Rampage, W. Silva, and Liddell

A. Silva wasnt nearly the fighter he is now, when he was fighting in Pride, he has made huge imporvements. The Heavyweights in the UFC stink (except Cro Cop and Couture and maybe Vera one day). Fedor would walk through anyone in UFC heavyweight, but thats not saying much. I dont know if Vera could beat Sylvia, but I KONW that Cro Cop can, and probably ol’ Couture also. Cro Cop is the future king of that division.

St. Pierre is the best in the world at his weight and would beat anyone in Pride. There is no 170 lber in Pride that could make it in UFC. St. Pierre, Hughes, Sanchez, Penn (if he goes back up in weight). Gomi is the only real fighter at the lower weights in Pride. Most of the Pride fighters cant deal with fighters with a good wrestling background. One by one all the good fighters from Pride, that arent champs, will come over to the UFC.
