I normally am not one that writes post-fight review articles, but I think this UFC 61 event is going to be an exception to that rule. First of all, I went 9-0 in my predictions which makes me 23-4 over the last 3 UFC fight cards. Not that it means anything; I’m just mentioning it…
I am not going to review every single fight, I just want to hit on a few key points.
- Sylvia vs. Arlovski - I don’t know if anyone expected this fight to go to a decision. Syliva vs. Arlovski III was one of the most boring fights I have seen, and now the UFC is in a little bit of a pickle. Sylvia proves he should be the Heavyweight Champion. What does the UFC do with Arlovski now? Do they resign him? i don’t think so, becuase you don’t want Arlovski picking off the other contenders that the UFC is trying to build. Even if Arlovski does “work his way back up” do we really want to see Sylvia vs. Arlovski IV?
- Ortiz vs. Shamrock - I know there is a lot of uproar that this fight was stopped too soon. People are jumping all over Herb Dean just like they did right after the Mir vs. Sylvia fight, in the end however, Dean proved to make the right decision after Sylvia’s forearm was broken during that fight. Dean most likely made the right decision here as well. Sure I would have liked the fight to go another 10 seconds or so and seen Ken Shamrock be completely knocked out. The right fighter won this fight and that is all that matters. I think the real disappointment comes because most viewers were looking for either fighter to be demolished and bloodied when the fight ended. That didn’t happen but the better fighter did win.
- Frank Mir vs. Dan Christison - Frank Mir needs to do one of two things: either train properly and get himself back into the shape he was before his accident when he was UFC champion, or retire from MMA completely. Personally, I would have given this decision to Christison. Mir looked like he was either four months pregnant or has been drinking a twelve-pack of beer every day during his training. Up until last night, Frank Mir was one of my favorite fighters. Not any more.
- Wanderlei Silva - Oh yeah, this news is still huge. Reports are also floating around that the UFC may have some kind of three-fight deal with Pride for Silva’s services.
