Sherdog.com mentioned in a recent article that both Kenny Florian and Mark Hominick have turned down offers to fight Sean Sherk for the vacant UFC Lightweight belt. In the most recent episode of Beatdown Radio, Sherdog.com editor Josh Gross discusses these reports.
With talk that Sean Sherk is having trouble luring an opponent into the ring to compete for the lightweight title, it might be preferable to look at two other athletes to fill the slots. I’m dismissive of the idea of giving someone an automatic look at a belt simply because they’re dropping weight and “should” be a monster. Kenny Florian, Mark Hominick, and even Joe Stevenson have done more to merit the opportunity; Jens Pulver never actually dropped the gold. That’s four far ahead of Sherk in the worth department. …
I’m interested in what you think about the whole UFC lightweight belt. Who in your opinion deserves a shot at fighting for the belt. Leave a comment and vote in the poll.
* UPDATE *
MMAWeekly.com is reporting that Kenny Florian denies turning down a fight against Sean Sherk.
“No, not at all,” said Florian about the rumors that he turned down the fight with Sherk. “I would absolutely fight Sean Sherk but the UFC wanted to push for the August show, and I just came out of training from my last fight, and I don’t want to push myself into another fight with only 3 weeks to prepare for a guy like Sean Sherk. The UFC said I was fighting Sherk and I accepted. But, they said in October or November and then all of a sudden they pushed for the August show. I’m leaving for Brazil for two weeks to train pretty soon and just don’t have the time that I need to prepare for that fight. Sherk’s been on the sidelines waiting and training for a fight and I just got done with my fight and was in training for that for 7 or 8 months. I’ll fight anyone at 155lbs. If Fedor can drop to 155lbs, I’ll fight him, just give me ample time to prepare for it!”
Come on Kenny, you wanna fight Fedor? Uh huh, sure you do…
