Mike Tyson officially signs with Pride FC

August 24th, 2006 | by Dr J

Mike TysonI’ve held off on the Mike Tyson - Pride story for a while, but now it looks like it’s official. Mike Tyson has signed some sort of contract with Dream Stage Entertainment and Pride FC.

Pride has signed a contract with Tyson to fight, but will this fight be an MMA fight? Probably not. According to Kami Pro Hand, Pride would more than likely hold a boxing match with Pride rules (not MMA rules) to take place on one of their shows, and more than likely this show would take place in China.

The big question has now become who might fight Tyson. Kami Pro Hand also reported that Pride mentioned Mirko Cro Cop and Mark Hunt as possibilities, although nothing is confirmed. Cro Cop and Hunt would be logical choices due to their appeal among the fans and their proven stand-up ability with their K-1 experience.

Source: MMAWeekly.com

Zach Arnold from FightOpinion.com is reporting that Tyson’s debut in Pride will be at the Real Deal event in Las Vegas on October 21. Apparently the headline on Yahoo Japan’s website states that Pride FC President “Nobuyuki Sakakibara is expected to release contract details next week.”

This is a bad move for MMA. We have a hard enough time dispelling the thug stereotype. Then DSE brings on Tyson?…this sucks. Who’s next..Don King? Do we really want to go down this road? Not I.

Tyson will have his *** handed to him. Pride fighters are on a higher level than Boxing. I’d love to see Cro Cop knock that peice of **** out, **** Tyson.

Comment by TD about 2 years, 4 months ago

Tyson is a natural street fighter and can take a bunch better than anyone in Pride. Also, with a much smaller gloves, his hand speed and power will be much greater. He is a threat. At the end of the day, better all around skill by Pride fighters will make the difference. And if Tyson looses this will only help add crediblity & notablity to Pride/UFC.

Comment by ZB about 2 years, 4 months ago

Tyson has never been a good boxer. He’s no more than a ruthless streetfighter who’s more or less washed up. Granted, he can punch, but cooler headsd will prevail. Crocop is an absolute professional and should have no problem taking care of Tyson. One 700 psi left-kick to the head is all it’s going to take to shut Tyson up for good.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 month, 2 weeks ago

wow Doc this piece just wont die eh? anyways……. i think its less about what discipline you start with and more about the fighter doing it. when i was young i competed in both highschool wrestling and boxing and not until i found MMA did i ever connect the two, it was like the difference between baseball and hockey for me so nether had anything to do with the other. since those times i ended moving on to kickboxing, mauy thai, ju jitsu, and what ever else i could learn. the reason most boxers take sh*t is because they are under the impression that boxing is the be all, end all and thats all they need to win and thats just ridiculous and Tyson is one of those characters who thinks like that so i doubt anyone will ever take him seriously in the world of MMA.

I think it is very exciting to bring Mike Tyson onto the scene, and it should make for some great fights. What will happen when Tyson connects with a 4 oz. glove? Someone’s going down. Maybe he’ll work his way up to Fador–hey say what you will…I’ll watch it.

Comment by tyson-done about 2 years, 3 months ago

firstly mike tyson was a good boxer, until he lost his mind and bite off a mans ear in the ring, secondly that retard will stand no chance in a ring with a pride fighter especialy crocop this pride stunt is just another tattoo for tyson to add to his face, right after crocop lands a left kick straight to his face. Get real man tyson vs. fedor would never happen and if it somehow did, it would be like fedor trying to break a pain of glass.. needless to say who wouldn’t wanna see this washed up handicaped talking idiot get his *** kicked…

Comment by bvrasp about 2 years, 3 months ago

ok, Tyson was a great boxer when he was 18, gold medal and all, he had all the physical tools to become one of the greats instead of pretty much a joke. He simply didnt have the mental tools.

If they gon put tyson in an MMA rules fight, he getting destroyed, If its like, kickboxing rules, he getting destroyed, the only way he has anything better than a punchers chance would be in a boxing match with someone whos not primarily a boxer. Even if they DO set up a boxing match, since he went to jail, tyson was never the same, and he never will be, he would be lucky to win any kind of match.

Yea hes a beast, but hes not well disciplined, lazy and out of shape and he has always had a reputation for gassing if he didnt win the fight in the first 30 sec…

Comment by Don about 2 years, 2 months ago

If there’s no grappling, Tyson will eat them alive…if there is, he gets his a** handed to him.

Comment by sdfds about 2 years, 2 months ago

Mike Tyson today is not Mike Tyson of 1988. That is the huge difference. I have seen a lot of tyson’s fights when he was in his prime and I can say that I have never seen more raw and explosive force possed by any fighter other than Tyson. With heavy and thickly padded boxing gloves, one hit, he would land a brutaly powerful right hook and knock his opponent out despite that his hook did not connect with his opponent’s jaw or chin, but rather landed on the forehead! Now imagine mma gloves.
Chuck Lidell’s combos that destroyed Tito were nothing compared to those of Tyson.
I dont know how 88 tyson would do in mma but I am sure he would massacre any fighter in a streetfight which is the true ultimate fighting

Comment by boro about 2 years, 2 months ago

I agree, in street fight he would dominate, because I dont think that a BJJ guy would pull tyson in his guard on the pavement. I witnessed a horrible event that took place in Sweden when a street fight broke out in the line-up of a club between a locally known streetfighter and a purple belt bjj guy who was cocky. The bjj guy was a bit smaller but very stupid or extremely overconfident. When he tried to close the distance to take the streetfighter down, he did not manage to take him down so he did some kinda judo sacrifice throw pulling the strettfighter in his guard, but when he ended up on the ground, he did not move, and there was blood pouring on the back of his head. The streetfighter had gripped the bjj guys face as he was falling with him and then powerfully rocked his head to the pavement and it was all amplified by the fall. Ambulance came carrying out the bjj guy who was not moving. It ws really horrible especially the sound made when his skull hit the concrete.

i mostly agree with everyones statemenets accept for one. If Tyson and fedor ever did meet, fedor has a tendancy to let his hands fly. Now we all have to admit if fedor did not take him down right away and be a ***** trying to finish the fight within the first second or two it would come out as one of the best slug fests ever. I beleive in fedor and tyson actually went out there and traded…fedor would go down within the first round

Comment by Stevotama about 2 years, 1 month ago

The only thing is Pride are going to make it a boxing match. So we are talking the Marquees of Queensbury Rules. Not takedowns, standing submissions, kicks etc. I think if Iron Mike could get back to the basics of what made him so good in the 80’s and forget all the issues he could make a serious comeback, if only because he has changed the game to one where he can dominate.

Comment by tyjanium about 2 years, 1 month ago

Tyson in a pride event would be interesting. With MMA rules Tyson has only that all too often used expression a “puncher’s chance” which frankly does not amont to much. It has been proven time and time again that in an MMA fight, great strikers who posses no ground skill, when fighting a skilled ground fighter, almost always loose. Now if Tyson does indeed compete in a boxing match with Pride FC, provided he shows up in shape and hungry, He would undoubtedly have a decisive advantage. The greatest strikers in MMA, Liddel, Cro-cop, Fedor or whomever else you could suggest are not world class boxers, not even close. I’m not going to go on and on about his incredible punching speed and power, or what he could do in 4oz. gloves, we all no what is going to happen if he lands a punch in that situation. Mike’s real advantage is going to be his boxing skill, let us not forget that at the championship level boxing is much more about skill and technique rather than power. It’s called the “sweet science” for a reason folks. Great boxing isn’t just about throwing punches, it’s about footwork, head movement, the ability to roll with punches, using the boxer’s clinch, and especially the all to important body punch that is so seldomly used in MMA; all of which, in my oppinion, are skills that the current crop MMA fighters do not posses to the degree that top level boxers do. Mike earned the heavyweight belt at what? 19, 20 years old? No boxer that I can think of in recent history has diplayed his combination of skill, power and ferocity in the ring. At the age of 40 he can no longer compete at the top levels of boxing, but a boxing Match against an MMA opponent? If Mike comes in top form with an honest desire to win (in my oppinion he hasn’t shown any fire in a long while) he would be very, very, dangerous period.
Well thats my oppinion, I hope at least a few people found it a good argument.

Comment by Mad about 2 years, 1 month ago

Good argument, I like many others grew up watching Tyson blow through the boxing ranks. He is extremely powerful and a great boxer. I just think it’s a mistake on Pride’s part to bring him in and change the rules to suit him. If he want’s to join an MMA organization he should have to fight by the current rules. With some grappling training he can at least try to learn take down defence. He is dangerous regardless but I just don’t agree with making special rules for one guy. I don’t think a boxing match will generate near the excitment as an MMA fight with Tyson would. It will be cool seeing him fight with 4oz gloves though.

Isn’t it wonderful how the pack turns.. Tydon was one of the best fighters ever…… true he messed up but don’t forget how he was manipulated by a devious wife and an even more devious manger and has been well used by people who should have been looking out for him. Tyson at his best was lethel and would have beeen a match for Fedor or Crocop. All he needed was the right sort of traiing to give him the tools for MMA. I detest all you armchair warriors, better to be a hasbeen than a neverwas….

no doubt mike tyson was one of the greatest boxers of all time. but i dont think he could hang in an mma fight because is just not a complete fighter. and to change rules for one match is not a horrible idea unless they just made it a boxing match with mma gloves. i think it would just end too fast and both fighters would have the same chance of winning by that lucky punch!

Comment by Denmark about 1 year, 11 months ago

Tyson is a great boxer! thats true, but only in the boxer ring. Guys, we can not compare just box and PRIDE. Fedor and Crocop can win Tyson without doubt. I am sure 100 percent.

Best guy to fight Mike in MMA is Mark Hunt. I mean if it would be held in a boxing rule manner. Hunt proved to be the toughest MMA fighter ever. I mean he can get hits more than any other fighter.

Regarding Mike vs Fedor. I think Mike woudn’t accept to fight Fedor in a MMA rule match. Fedor would win easily.

Uhhh, okay. Any other topics of interest boys? I said “of interest”. Mike Tyson is a washed up boxer that is retired. Lets all start talking about Hagler and George Foreman getting into the octagon while we are at it!!! Of course Fedor would win, MMA incorporates all the tools of the human body, legs, feet, knees, fists, everything.. while boxing is just “throwing hands” .. Fedor would kick Mikes butt easily.

mike tyson getting in to an mma ring is like tiger woods trying to hit a fast ball, sure both sport you swing a stick at a ball but they are different. just because boxing and mma are both fight sports it doesnt mean it would be easy to jump from one to an other. and unless shaq has been doing some serious training there is no way he could compete i dont think shaq-fu is enough to cut it in mma.

How old are you Tyson critics?? Tyson is a warrior and a skilled fighter whom has more courage than any of you. He has been fighting all of his life and as a champion deserves the benifit of the doubt at all times. It’s funny to be that people that claim to be such fight buffs so quickly forget how unpredictable any fight game is. It really show how little you all step into the ring vs. how much you sit ont the side and talk about it. As far as conditioning, a true boxer trains just as rigorously and with similar tecniques as martial artists so there is no arguement there.

Comment by Scott Burt about 1 year, 7 months ago

That is true. I believe Tyson would beat anybody in the world in a real street fight or even an mma match simply because he’s the most explosive and powerful fighter in history. He would knock out Fedor and would beat Sapp.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 7 months ago

for the tyson fans, tyson was great when he was 18, he exploded in the first round of the fight trying to get a vicious KO. Then he went to jail and his carrer ended.. then he came back with terrible conditioning trying to do the same thing. People stopped slugging with him, he would gas out and lose the fight. Right now, tyson couldnt even win a boxing match.. let alone an mma match. He would have a punchers chance, until it got to the clinch, where he has no skills except biting the ear, or on the ground where he has no skills except.. maybe biting the ear.. hes got about the same chance to beat fedor that bob sapp does.. slim to none..

Tyson, pfffff
Tyson will get destroyed.
MMA has long been underated in the most of the world. Tyson getting destroyed will bring people to realise how truly awesome the best in the business are e.g. fedor.
MMA started out pitting fighting styles against each other. But over its evolution people started to learn what works and what doesnt (its ammassed a certain amount of scientific evidence) and the sport has gone a million miles ahead of any pure martial art except styles that have incorporated this evidence based rationale aldready e.g. sambo and vale tudo.
We all have people that continue to tell us that they know a kung fu/karate/taikwon doe master who is ten times better than anyone in mma, but we know thats untrue based on the evidence of all the asian stand-ups that have been clowned.

If tyson has any background in wrestling I think hes got a chance. But highly likely to be a massive win for mma

I have always respected mma fighters and as you can see the best and most exciting fighters know how to hit and not get hit. That is the art of boxing. You train the best knockout boxer in the world to wrestle and defend takedowns and you have yourself a new MMA king. Guess what? I been training for 4 years now in MMA. watch this space suckers. Boxing rules!

To the guy posting as Tyson.. LOL!! thats all i have to say..

To the guy talking about how traditional martial arts are obsolete, LOLOL!!! in the sport sense, a competition like UFC, Pride, etc.. A traditional martial artist is INCREDIBLY stifled, in the types of techniques they can use in competition. Its also not an acceptable use of martial arts in their eyes, let me know when you see a grand master in an mma match. Im 99% sure my sensei could whoop anyones *** in real life! the guys a grand master!! if you have ever seen a grand master give a clinic.. you might see what im talking about..

My sensei Fred Villari, what can you say? the guys amazing, i saw him land like 12-14 palm strikes to the face in under a second.. i sort of saw it, his hands were moving so fast and his assistants face turned bright red like a tomato instantly! There are thousands of guys like that all over the world, he personally trained in the shaolin temple for years bro.. These are guys who are at one with their body and mind.. theres no other way to describe it.. They do NOT compete, because thats not what martial arts is about..

All im saying is.. dont diss traditional martial arts, they STILL run ****, and in my opinion, they always will.

@ bvrasp,kansas,doc,
do you guys think it would “disrespecful” if dana wanted to unify the pride and ufc belt into one? I mean i could see where he is comming from in respects to the fighters and all, but i dont see it as being disrespectful at all. Considering they are trying to find out who is the BEST fighter in the world, why not unify the belts.

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 7 months ago

Good question Todd.. one that requires thought … I will think about that..

Comment by todd about 1 year, 7 months ago

But if you keep two, then that would still be keeping a part of pride in the ufc, i mean depending on how one would look at it. i wouldnt mind a fighter parading around saying figuritivley “i am a pride champ” im mean that would bring some added interest in a marketing aspect you know.? But i guess it all comes down to how someone stands back and looks at the whole situation.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 7 months ago

ya.. that IS a tough one.. hmm.. well, i wouldnt say its “disrespectful” thats for sure. Would it be the best thing for mma? i dunno.. theres pros and cons.. like, it would make for more accurate rankings, but with separate belts we would probably have better match-ups in fights. The unified title matchs would be great! but they would probably be few and far between.. still, its a tough call, we would probably have to see if pride is even AROUND anymore before this happens anyways..

Comment by richard about 1 year, 7 months ago

someone said before that the ufc aint gonna by pride just to bleed them dry of the fighters and make it a second class organization so by keeping the belts separate and building fan bases for the fighters with different belts wheather there there in pride or the ufc makes people want to watch both organizations and every once in a while having these supermatches make more money KNOW ?

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 7 months ago

I think there should be unified title matches.. and I think there should be time limits to defend the title similar to boxing, that is where boxing is right, they allow for different fighters to fight title for title, but if a champion is unable to defend all the belts they win, the lose them eventually to their repective organization ie. the WBC .. or WBO .. IBF .. and then you have a top fighter grab at the vacant title, which eventually comes full circle into another unified title bout which makes for great PPV and fights.. my thoughts on it.. but I think Pride should be seperate, it makes it more interesting, like the 3 major boxing affiliations ..

Cro Cop says he has four fights remaining on his contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion, beginning with his next fight he confirmed for September 8’s UFC 75 in London, England.”
