ICON signs Frank Trigg

September 19th, 2006 | by Dr J

Frank TriggI mentioned a short while ago that Frank Trigg would be coming out of his short “retirement” to fight again. Trigg will return to MMA and fight Jayson Miller on the ICON Sport: Unstoppable card which will take place in Hawaii. This will be a title fight for the ICON Middleweight belt which Miller recently won after defeating Robbie Lawler by submission.

Frank Trigg hasn’t fought since April when he lost by submission to Carlos Condit in the semifinals of the Rumble on the Rock Grand Prix. After the loss, Trigg announced he would be retiring from fighting and most people assumed that Trigg was concentrating on his new fight announcing deal with Pride FC. However, Trigg is back and is now moving up in weight to the middleweight division of 185-pounds instead of his usual welterweight division of 170-pounds.

ICON Sport President T. Jay Thompson stated in the official press release:

Trigg has all the tools to become the next Icon Sport Middleweight Champion. He excels at doing damage from the top position. And we saw what happened when Lawler got on top of Mayhem in that now-infamous second round of their bout…Lawler nearly finished the fight right there. Mayhem will be in real trouble if he finds himself under someone who has the wrestling and ground-and-pound skills of Trigg. Trigg vs. Mayhem will be an absolute war.

Welcome back, Twinkle Toes.

    • Dr J: I can buy that. I just watched the Maia sub on Herman again and it definitely was nice. I’d probably move it up to #3 and knock...

    • richard: dr j steve cantwell shouldnt be on the list,we see armbars everyday nothing was special except to have someone dumb enough not to tap.
    • Dr J: definitely it was an excellent sub. where on the list would you put it and which one would you knock off from the list?
    • Drehog: I still think Maia vs. Herman should be in the top 3
