PrideFC: The Real Deal Recap

October 23rd, 2006 | by Dr J

PrideFC: The Real DealPride Fighting Championships first US event is in the books and overall I think it was a very good night of MMA. Here are a few of my thoughts.

  • First of all, that is NOT EVEN CLOSE to what I thought Pride’s female ring announcer looked like. I have heard her announcing on the Japan shows but never actually seen a picture of here. I had this skinny, scary looking asian lady with the two pigtails, and lip ring. Man was I wrong!
  • Fedor won easily as expected. Coleman showed his age much like I expected. It was pretty sad (pathetic) watching Mark cry after the fight. I expected him to announce his retirement afterwards considering how emotional he was. It would have been the perfect venue for him; back in the US finally, in the Pride ring having fought for the Heavyweight belt. But no, all that crying was simply to say “I will be back.” Way to go General MacArthur. (Click Here for those of you with no sense of history)
  • I really with the Robbie Lawler fight went longer. It’s always nice to see a big knockout by a flying knee, but we really didn’t get to see how Lawler looks now. But man, go back and watch the replay of that knee. The camera angle from the corner shows Joey’s tooth flying high into the air (much like Diego vs. Karo). Ouch!
  • Baroni looked really good and completely dominated Nishijima. I’ve never seen Baroni pull a submission, but now that he has I guess pigs are going to start flying as well.
  • For those that were worried (and I don’t know who really was) Shogun IS BACK
  • Is anyone else completely sick of the whole “Chuck vs. Wandy” hype already? Man give it up. So now Wanderlei isn’t going to leave Las Vegas city limits until February? I’ve got to stick with the UFC on this one. Chuck has already gone and fought in Pride. It’s time for Pride to return the favor and send Chuck to fight in the UFC. Just because Pride is now going to hold 6 shows a year in the US, doesn’t mean Chuch should fight in the Pride ring again.

What are your thoughts on the Pride show? Did you even buy the PPV or was this just a “download the day after” event?

what can you say but great card!

That flying knee was nice and everything, but it didnt really give us a chance to see robbie lawler, tho you cant really complain lol

Baroni! come back to the UFC!! very impressive performance with his transitions and how he controlled the fight, but man, he could have ended that fight much faster if the elbows were allowed. His elbow was in the guys face and he didnt know what to do cuz he couldnt drop it on him, and then in the crucifix it should have been over, but no bows, so he was throwing those awkward no power punchs.. till he fumbled out the kimora. Hes cocky, and from the history you might say hes got an attitude problem, but i love to watch him fight.

heheh watching butterbean is always entertaining if you ask me, people laugh at him and he might not be a great fighter, but when you got 400 pounds of pissed off hillbilly coming at you, watch out lol. same reason i like bob sapp and it explains why they have weight classes, i would have liked to see him fight mark hunt tho. Butterbean fought some of the best fighters in the world man, hes a warrior in my book. Like that fight with cabbage, keep representing for the fat boys hehe

Thought Barnett was gonna lose for a second there, didnt look good at all in this one, except for the clutch factor at the end.

Vitors still having mental problems.. hes not confident in his skills, thats his only problem. Wheres the vitor blitz? aka the belfort bumrush. Hes being way too defensive and he needs to start fighting with more tenacity, take some chances, put pressure and try to control the fight. On the ground differnet story.. but ya..

too bad for randleman, im hoping he didnt get himself hurt in this fight, i think its a mistake to be that stubborn, live to fight another day kev. Shogun showing the skills

I hope coleman doesnt fight fedor again, especially with his kids crying up in the ring and everything.. dam that was a pitiful sight to see, made me feel bad after the fight.. even fedor looked a bit embarrased for him. if coleman fights again, i hope its with another senior like if couture came out of retirement or something. Fedor said after the its been a long time since he fought and he wanted to extend the length of the fight LOL! he didnt mean to be cocky or insult coleman, but really i beleived him. I think he could have destroyed coleman quicker if he was giving 110%

I agree about Coleman after the fight. He shouldn’t have had his little girls up there right after he got his *** kicked. Very inapropriate. Fedor just showed one again wht class he has, and why he is a the top of the food chain.

I really pissed off about the Vitor thing, i wish someone would find the people who took his sister and allow Vitor to give them savage beating. But what i really hope for is that Vitor’s sister is found alive and well…………………..although that is very slim.

I wonder how well Vitor would be doing in fighting if his sister was never kidnapped?
