UFC buys WFA (and WEC??)

December 11th, 2006 | by Dr J

Quinton JacksonThe Ultimate Fighting Championship’s official website, UFC.com, is reporting that Zuffa (UFC parent company) has “acquired select assets from the World Fighting Alliance (WFA) organization. Under the terms of the purchase, World Fighting Alliance, Inc. will cease all operations.”

The specific “select assets” that the UFC acquired in the deal were not mentioned but it can be assumed that the deal included all the WFA’s current assets including options for fighters under contract.

I am crossing my fingers that this purchase includes the contract of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Many MMA fans have wanted to see Jackson in the UFC for quite a while; specifically to see a Jackson vs. Chuck Liddell rematch. I’d like to see Jackson fight anyone in the UFC to be honest.

In another related, yet unconfirmed story MMAWeekly.com and Wrestling Observer are reporting that Zuffa has also bought out the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization. There have been no confirmed reports from the UFC about this purchase yet. There does seem to be some value to this report due to the fact that Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta were both in attendance at WEC 24 back in October.

But who cares about the WEC; bring on RAMPAGE!

I seen this yesterday on the UFC site. They didn’t mention Quinton in the article though. It will be sweet to see him fight in the UFC. Hopefully if this is true we will be treated to some awsome fights in 07. I also saw on MMA weekly that the UFC and WWE are trying to buy Pride. It would be interesting if WWE was able to aquire Pride. That would bring both big shows to the states. If Pride’s not able to secure another TV deal by next year the sale is possible. This could be the biggest year for MMA as far as growth and the movement of top tallent. I think if the UFC took over Pride it would upset the competitive ballance. There needs to be at least two well known promotion so the companies still try to out do each other and put together good fight cards. If the UFC can get Crocop and Quinton maybe Fedor can be swayed also. One can only hope!!!

I’m with you BVRASP Dana has turned the UFC into the premier MMA promotion in the world!! Getting Quinton, Herring, Rutten, and Crocop within a couple of weeks that’s insane. This is going to be a banner year for the UFC. Can’t wait for Crocop to make his debut in the octagon. We finally have a legit heavy!!! See you later Tim good luck.
