Overall, I thought last nights event on Spike TV was a good event. There were some highlights, and some lowlights, but you can’t complain with free MMA. Here are just a few quick thoughts from last night.
- After watching last nights event, it goes without saying that no matter combat sport you prefer (MMA, boxing, wrestling) there is the risk of serious violence. Just ask Sean Salmon.
- Heath Herring’s debut was a disappointment; not because he lost, but because it’s so very apparent he has no ground game left. Heath can’t stand and complain after the fight that all O’Brien wanted to do was wrestle; all Jake O’Brien wanted to do was win the fight, and he knew his ground game was how he would accomplish that. Mission accomplished Jake, well done.
- Hermes Franca continues his streak as the hottest lightweight fighter in the UFC. After an impressive 2006, Franca starts off 2007 with a bang. I surely didn’t see Franca winning that fight with his fists, but hey, we can’t be right all the time.

DAMM GOES TO SHOW RASHAD IS A MONSTER.. I THINK HIM AND CHUCK NEED TO GO AT IT
HEY DR J… HONESTLY I THOUGHT HEATH WAS FAT SLOW…. AND REALLY SUCKED?
Heath’s preformance was terrible especially for all the hype coming into the fight. I’ve seen quite a few of his figts from K-1 and Pride and that’s the worst performance I’ve seen from him so far. Coming in I thought he would be in the top 3-4 heavies right off the bat but that fight proved he has no ground defense and his stand up sucked also. Tim has nothing to fear from Heath, I’m not a big Silvia fan but he would have KO’d Herring in less than 2 rounds. Franca and Fisher was a good bout. I was supprised he landed and hurt spencer with his very looping punches. I thought he would be uppercutted and TKO’d the way he would put his head down and come in throwing wildly but he landed one and that was enough to daze Spencer and get him the ref stoppage. Ed Herman got his first win. That was a pretty slick armbar good transition. His hair loked a little funny though.Rashad! I didn’t know he had that kind of power in his kicks damn! He has improved tremendously in his technique and conditioning. That kick looked reminicent of Mirko the way Salmon was instantly out. Hope the kid is alright he showed some heart but this is a dangerous sport and you have to be willing to face the consiquences. Overall I thought it was a good show give Rashad a few more fights and he may get his title shot. Maybe a fight with Rampage to see who faces Chuck could be interesting. Overall a good card any free MMA is good in my opinion. Hope they keep putting on good shows like this on Spike.
YEA RAMPAGE AND EVANS ID LOVE TO SEE THAT MAD!!!
Yea, Reshad is a contender for sure. I don’t know about letting him take on Rampage just yet. Lets see Rampage first, and as long as he doesn’t suck it up like Heath Hearing, then let Reshad fight a couple more fights…at least. Remember guys, he’s developing. If I were a trainer or manager I wouldn’t want that shot yet. He’s a long-term investment and he’ll keep winning, but he needs just a little more confidence, etc before he jumps into the top 4 or 5 in the world. Which I think Rampage/Ortiz/(for sure) Liddell #1 are in the top five.
U KNOW WHAT BRIAN U MAKE A GOOD POINT I AGREE…. LET HIM HAVE A FEW MORE FIGHTS
yup, your right about rashad brian, im sure that if they asked rashad, he would say the same thing, let him get his feet wet fighting some tougher guys.
About your top 4 list, hehe i think you meant to say top 4 UFC light heavys, not top 4 world light heavys.
Yea he even said he want to get a few more fights in before he goes for the title. His standup looked far better than before and you can tell 205 is the best weight for him. He used to gas easily and it looks like he has improved that alot. There’s just not that many LHW’s left to fight. He beat Bonner and already said he will not fight Jardine. Him and Jardine are goob friends and consider each other brothers and both agreed not to face off again. Maybe Forest would be a goob next match. Forest will have a lot to prove and it would be a good test for Evans. Hoefully Rampage and Crocop don’t come in and suck like Herring. That would put a damper on Dana’s signings. At least it looks like there is more competition in all the weight divisions that ever before. Can’t wait till February 3 when we will see if the hype got to everyone.
Rashad is quite good, from what i seen which was only two of his fights. he is a good athlete. I would like to see him fine toon his takedown defense and scrambling defense, because once he got tooken down and was on the cage and good ground and pound guy could have did some pretty bad damage to em. So i think once he gets better in his on-the-back defense i think he will be a good solid contender, i mean damn he won 15 fights that counts for something…right? oh yea i would not like to see him give up his back so much, i would hate to see someone capitalize on that.
Yea franca shocked me as well!!! He is like a mma version of ricardo mayorga!!! I mean he throws the bolows with his head down and hopes to land. But on the ground i think he is descent. Overall if he jsut changes and fine toons his stand up and gets a little more technical with his boxing i think he can be a rather complete fighter, i mean he is excellent on the ground so if he can excell in his boxing then i think he will be a great fighter.
haha MAD, i was thinking the exact same thing, Evans vs Griffin, thats wats up. We will probably see him fight jardine too, you cant refuse to fight someone hehe, i think they jus wanna build up a little hype. Like if Rashad beat Forrest, and Jardine won his next fight, then they both lost to chuck and tito, its kinda tough for them not to face off, but it will be a while for sure.
What happened to Herring should be a learning experience for Rampage and crocop, dont take anyone lightly. Though theyre both much better all around fighters than Herring, i dunno wat happened.. i really thing his team let him down in that fight, he couldnt have been well prepared the way he was falling flat on his azz off the shoot. I mean he was trying to sneak in one nice shot before the double leg, and seemed like he didnt even care if he got taken down. If that was the case, why didnt he throw a knee? LOL
Even though Rashad has looked impressive lately, I hardly think he is ready for a Chuck Liddell. I mean, who has Rashad really faced? I think a Rashad/Forrest or Rashad/Jardine would be the optimal test. Again, that’s one of those weak divisions w/o much top competition.
Rashad seems to fight very intelligently, setting up his opponents for the future rounds…even still, he was caught with a few shot from Salmon…and that’s just Salmon…imagine what those would do if they were Liddell shots
I can’t watch a UFC event without thinking it’s kiddie mma. No knees or kicks to “grounded†or “kneed†opponents … doesn’t matter who’s at fault. Another depleted UFC event.
Badape what is your problem? I think you are just a hater.
Ufc fight night gets better everytime I watch a new one, these up and comers are going to be the future of the sport and the evolution of to the next level. I was shock Herring ’s perfomance, but like someone said earlier let that be lesson to him about not taking people serious, he’s still under 30 years old so dont count him out yet, rashad is going to be the future of 205 class, but it going to be a cake walk, (quinton jackson is just 28) but that what we want competiton, ( i tired of liddel fighting the same people) and I tired of militich camp domination in the ufc the last 3-4 years.
I agree with you guys. Griffin vs Evans would be worth my PPV money. Have it as a co-main event, they should. Great fight, it will be. Talking like Yoda, I am. Tired, I must be. To bed, I will go…
ANYONE GONNA PICK UP UFC 67 ?
WHATS THE FIGHT CARD FOR UFC 67
?
the ufc 67 card goes like this:
Anderson Silva Vs. Travis Lutter
Mirko Cro Cop Vs. Eddie Sanchez
Quinton Jackson Vs. Marvin Eastman
John Halverson Vs. Roger Huerta
Patrick Cote Vs. Scott Smith
Sam Hoger Vs. Lyoto Machida
Terry Martin Vs. Jorge Rivera
Frankie Edgar Vs. Tyson Griffin
there is a few fights that are worth a look!
UGH THIS CARD ISNT THAT GREAT… IM LOOKIN FOWARD TO ANDERSON SILVA HE AN ANIMAL… ANY NEWS ON THE UFC 69 CARD?
lol patrick, trust me bro, rampage and crocop will not be dissappointing like Herring was. Though Herring has fought some of the best MMA heavyweights.. he also lost to them lol. Now with crocop he IS one of the best heavyweights, nobodys laying on top of crocop, thats for sure..
The main events gon be sik if it goes to the ground… Travis Lutter could win the fight on the ground, but Silvas no pushover. If it doesnt go to the ground.. dam.. i feel sorry for Travis..
WHAT ABOUT GSP… DO YOU KNOW WHEN HES GONNA FIGHT AGAIN?
Eddie Sanchez said in an interview that he plans to stand with Mirko. I hope he was trying to throw people off his actual game plan. If he tries this approach we will have two highlight head kicks in a little over a week. Hopefully Rampage starts training the way he needs to. He admitted that he hates training so I hope his view has changed since he joined the UFC. He will need to be at the top of his game mentally and pysically to take on Chuck. I think these two will come in with the bang that Herring was supposed to. This weeks fights should be good.
Does ANYONE thing UFC 67 is worth $40 bucks? I mean, with GSP pulling out, it kind of puts a damper on things. Not to mention they are coming of some monster cards from the past 6 months, to begin 07′ with a bunch of mediocre fighters fighting really good opponents, (ie. cro cop and jackson) seems kind of weak to me.
I also noticed they are pushing UFC 68 as much as 67 which would indicate they dont have much confidence in their UFC 67 fight card…..
MMAK YO DUDE 40 BUCKS NOT WORTH IT… SINSE GSP HAD TO WITHDRAW..NOT WITH IT NO WAY
YO DR J…. IS THERE ANY NEWS ON ANDREI WHO HES GONNA FIGHT NEXT IF HE IS AT ALL … I HEARD A RUMOR THAT HE AINT GONNA FIGHT UFC ANYMORE?
I get every event man, there hasnt been a UFC event that i havent looked forward to, counting down the days man! i get fired up about each and every fight Card. They could always be better, but you take wat you can get, and theyre all going in my collection anyways..
I watch every one also. I’m pumped just to see Crocop in the octagon. Soon the UFC will have enough talent to fill out every card with good fights. I don’t understand how MMA fans buy a PPV event just for one fight. Sometimes the undercard fights are the best ones. The way they are hyping the fights now it’s hard for the main events to live up to. Look what happened to Herring he was supposed to be the headliner with Rashad and steal the show but it ended up being the worst fight of the night.
all i can say is dont buy a p.p.v for any reason except that you fan or mma and you want to see a couple of good fights. they wont make an effort to book good fights unless enough people watch events. there was not one p.p.v. in 2006 that i felt ripped off after watching.
You tell’em RJ…. By the way, you could always order Pride33…
Silva vs. Henderson….again.
WHO IS SEAN SALMON HAS HE FOUND IN ANYOTHER ORGANIZATION…..??? I FEEL SO BAD FOR THE GUY
YO WHATS UP WITH MIKE TYSON….. DID PRIDE FIRE HIM AFTER HE GOT BUSTED AGAIN?
Yeah…I was never too thrilled with this card either, especially when the GSP backed out. They should have added something worthwhile to make up for it. I do think that this card will give the UFC bigshots a real idea of the true MMA fans out there who will order this cause they really know who Cro and Rampage are not cause they happen to be in Vegas and drinking on that weekend. Overall, since they are competing with the Super Bowl, in a way, they really dropped the ball by not making the fight card “power packed”. There are more than enough fights out there that need to take place not just for the fans but for title contention and placement in the divisions.
i remember way back when i got the ufc 22 p.p.v. and i was kind of disappointed about the line up of fighters but i really wanted to see tito ortiz vs. frank shamrock. i ended up seeing some pretty good fights like the the third ufc fight of an up and comming chuck liddell and he is starting to show “championship” striking against paul jones. im also got to see the debut of two “new” miletich fighters jens pulver and matt hughes. i hear those two guys went on to fairly good careers LOL. my point is the fight card isnt going to be ****** just because you have never heard of the fighters. todays nobodys are tomorrows champions. and you just might regret not getting to see tomorrows big thing fight today.
did anyone else hear that sean salmon quit his job to fight full time .he should of waited to the end of the rashad fight i think
@ Amir
What the hell are u talking about. How is the ufc competing with the superbowl when its on a saturday night and the superbowl is on sunday evening. You have absolutely no idea what u are talking about. Anyway I think this ufc is gonna be sweet because the ufc signed the most exciting fighter in all of mma and his name is mirko cro cop. I dont care what u say about chuck lidell I think that mirko is way more exciting and if he were to ever fight chuck he would knock him out in the first round. MARK MY WORDS MIRKO WILL DOMINATE THE UFC.
@Alen
….so smart guy, you don’t think that the ICEMAN, as the LHW champion is exiting. ARe you nuts? He’s knocked out everyone he’s fought except Rampage…. and that’s a temporary condition. Rampage will hit the floor.
Nothing against Cro Cop, he is awesome, but nobody in their right mind would try to take any credit from Chuck.
@Dennis
I’m not taking any credit from Chuck, he is a great fighter its just that he does not have nearly as impressive of a resume as Mirko and I am just saying that would kick Chuck Lidells *** and that he is a more exciting fighter than Chuck, therefore this next pay per view is gonna kick ***.
alen dont try with dennis hes really hooked on chucks nuts
Man! here we go again…….. ****! Get Tito’s nut out your mouth!
@Alen
Cro Cop may be Chuck, he’s a bigger guy and should! But not if Chuck catches him in the jaw with one of those heat seeking missles. You must admit that if that happens…….. Mirko fall down.
I agree with that 100% If Chuck hits u with even 80% of his power u are gonna get knocked out but I just think mirko would dominate Chuck because of the amazing leg kicks and he can also strike with his hand. Mirko Cro Cop weighs 218 pounds if he cuts 12 pounds (because of the 1 pound allounce) he would be able to fight Chuck for his title. Now on the other hand you cant argue the fact that Chuck has dominated the UFC but lets face it the talent in Pride’s heavyweight and lightheavyweight divisons has been much better than the UFC’s in the past few years. And Mirko has been great going against both heavyweights and lightweights. I know that people still think that Fedor is better than Mirko but here is one thing that you cant argue and it is that Mirko Cro Cop is the most exciting MMA fighter there is.
