Matt Hughes Explains Against St. Pierre

February 6th, 2007 | by Dr J

Matt HughesMatt Hughes has posted his thoughts on why he lost to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 65. You can find the full entry on Matt’s website.

Well, I believe I finally got some answers about the loss from the St. Pierre fight. I went into that fight mostly on faith and I believed that it was my destiny to win that fight. I now realize that it takes more than faith to do anything in this world. Faith is still #1, but it also takes #2 knowledge and #3 physical practice.

So, my mistakes were:

1. Knowledge - I should have watched more tape of Georges’ fights and come up with a better gameplan instead of going out there and finding a way to win one way or the other.

2. Physical Practice - I think I should have gone in stronger and in better shape, even though it never went past the middle of the second round, I think I could have been in better shape.

My faith was very positive and I did believe, before the fight, that I was supposed to win. Maybe that’s why I didn’t put as much training into it as I could have. So, now I will begin training harder than I ever have before on the road to fighting Georges again.

SUUUUREEE Matt. It’s hype starting early. The fight between Matt and George will bring a lot of money to the UFC. Heck, it may rival that of UFC 66. Dana White will make THAT UFC one not to miss.

Don’t get me wrong people…I like Matt Hughes a lot. I just see him retiring after the GSP trilogy is over. Then he’ll come back like Coulture did. Mark my words…

i know matt lost bad but come on hes still one of the best in the world and in my opinion till the rematch is the best in that weight class with diego sanchez a close second gsp third

well i guess its time for me to defend my boy GSP. now i can see you saying hughes is still number one he has only lost one fight since feb.2004 he has a large list of title defenses and an even bigger list of wins over very worthy opponents. i am 100% sure he is a hall of famer. so i agree with you its hard to bump him out of #1 welter but watch the hughes vs. st.pierre 2 fight again and tell me that looked like #1 lost to #3 that night. and your right we wont truly know till the rubber match but for now all i got to go on is one fight were GSP was dominating untill he got cought sleeping with an armbar. and another fight were GSP just dominated. and diego #2 and GSP #3. um you know what i have nothing to say.mon dieu votre fou!!!

Comment by Savage about 1 year, 9 months ago

What GSP under diego are you crazy …i cant beleive you said that, it’s complete ludicrisity that diego is ahead of GSP.. oh man i want what he’s smokin…lol

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 9 months ago

Hey RJ..mon ami,

I feel you man, no way Rush is #3, To me, Diego still needs to prove that he’s #3.

As for 1 and 2, we both know who they are….LOL

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 9 months ago

YO DUDES ANYONE KNOW IF GSP HAS A GOOD CHIN OR DOES IT BLOW?

Comment by DayDay about 1 year, 9 months ago

lol i think the general impression is tthat the whole notion of Diego sanchez being ahaead of GSP is absolutely perposterous!!
juss like R.J said “mon dieu votre fou!!!”
like..i honestly dont know how ppl watch matches these days, because juss like R.J said, we all only have two matches to base opinions on…one fight were GSP was dominating untill he got cought sleeping with an armbar. and another fight were GSP just dominated, and im both gsp was still dominating..so i dont see hughes defeating gsp again, or even commin close to a knock out…he is 25-2, but still, everyone meets their match and has thier day…thats life man..unfortunately i think hughes time has passed as champ

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 9 months ago

I think everyone agrees that Diego cant be considered above GSP at this point, no way man, GSP is that champ, better recognize!

The thing about hughes, i dunno wat hes talking about, it sounds like excuses, the fact is, he wanted to stand with GSP and knock him out, because hes an ego maniac. I believe that hughes could have beat GSP on the ground, but he was trying to show off, when he said that it was faith, he meant ego. Thats the reality of the situation, im a big hughes fan, but he has nobody to blame but himself.

At this point i consider GSP #1.. because hes the champ, hughes #2 because hes still the number 1 contender to the belt. I guarantee you guys that Hughes can beat GSP on the ground, at 170 Hughes is the strongest grappler in mma PERIOD. GSP is by FAR a better striker than Hughes, if they scrap it out again, GSP will knock him out again, if Matt decides he wants to win the fight, he will take it to the ground and get the win.

About Diego, he has the potential to beat both Hughes and GSP, but just because you have the potential, doesnt mean you will deliver. Case in point, diaz, karo, belfort, they were supposed to be champs! but something happened, i could see Diego getting derailed from his destiny, then again, he could come through and become the 170 champ! its hard to say, thats why its fun to watch the fights hehe. As of right now, diego is #3 in this division..

BVRSP YO DUDE I DONT AGREE ABOUT MATT BEING ABLE TO TAKE GSP ON THE GROUND …. GSP OUT GROUNDED SHERK AND TRIGG LIKE NOTHING….I BET GSP IS IF NOT REAL CLOSE TO BEING AS STRONG AS HUGHES…. BESIDES MATT IS GONNA WANNA TRY TO KO ST PIERRE HE WANTS TO GET EVEN

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 9 months ago

st.pierre is a true mma fighter. his game is very complete. good ground defense, awesome ground and pound, respectable ju-jitsu, monster take downs, and you cant even question his stand up. he could hang in for a good fight against any fighter at 170lbs. and i dont think hughes or sanchez has the tools to beat st.pierre at this moment.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 9 months ago

ya, its all personal opinions i guess.. Personally i think Hughes can beat GSP on the ground, in response to patrick, sherk isnt meant for 170 division. Hughes also beat trigg a few times, tho it doesnt matter who beat who, comparing ground “styles” the way each guy behaves on the ground, hughes with the wrestling/jujitsu mix, adding his insane power (and it IS insane at that division) he can win the ground game, nothing is 100% but he has the edge on the ground. I mean, what weight do you think hughes is coming in the fight at? its certainly not 170 or 180, hes gotta be pushing 200 man, especially as a wrestler he has alot of experience in cutting weight like that.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 9 months ago

AFTER HE WEIGHS IN AT 170 HE AINT GONNA GAIN NO 30 LBS IN A NIGHT DUDE?

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 9 months ago

yea.. he can, its not a matter of fat or anything, its the degree of dehydration that happens before the weigh-in. Im sure you know wat im talking about patrick, Riggs is another good example of a fighter who can put on near 30 pounds post weigh-in. Its not uncommon in mma and even standard in wrestling.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 9 months ago

HUH I DIDNT KNOW THAT THANKS DUDE I THOUGHT THEY WEIGHED IN AND EAT ALOT AND GAIN LIKE A POUND OR 2

You know when theyre in the sauna and riding a bike in the sauna with all that gear on? thats the weight cutting, theyre definately losing some fat, and some muscle mass, but mostly theyre just sweating out the water in their body. The human body is like 90% water, ofcourse its to a certain extent, people have died in the past trying to cut weight, its very dangerous. Thats what happened to Lutter, he doesnt have a good team and he tried to do it himself, im sure he has alot of experience, but you need to have other guys to monitor you and control your diet and your weight so you can concentrate on training. Also they do test cuts to see if you can make it, so if your like.. hmmm .. 1.5 pounds overweight at your maximum threshhold, you need to be 1.5 pounds lighter at “natural weight” so you KNOW your making the cut.

30 pounds is a huge amount of weight tho, not many guys can make that kind of a cut, thats more common in wrestling. A more common weight gain post weigh-in for mma fighter is 10-20 pounds. A guy like Hughes is cutting 20 pounds FOR SURE.. let me say that again.. FOR SURE. Probably up to about 25 for hughes, doubt he go do more than that.. but who knows.. im not in there training with them.. Other guys like Randleman for instance, or Riggs Usually cut 25 pounds, so they could probably push the 30 pound mark..

so really.. is hughes cutting 30 pounds? probably not, 20? definately, 25? maybe.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 9 months ago

ACTUALLY I HEARD THAT GSP CUT 15 LBS THE DAY BEFORE THE WEIGH IN BEFORE HE FOUGHT HUGHES??

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 9 months ago

ya they all do it, its just to what extent, and also depends on the fighter if it zaps their energy for the fight or gives them the extra weight they need. Its kind of a gamble in some situations, but its all about experience and how suited your body is for cutting weight.

i showed my wife how easy it is to lose and gain weight a couple of months ago because she had no idea it was even possible. i was weighting my self in the early afternoon and late at night again and i was losing or gaining up to fifteen lbs. a day. the last time i did it i was 181lbs. at 1:30pm and i was 163lbs. at about 11:00pm that 18 lbs. in 9 and a half hours. so 30lbs. is not far fetched at all. i am by no stretch any sort of pro athlete or even close to top physical condition and look what i was able to do.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 9 months ago

ISNT IT BETTER TO JUST EAT RIGHT AND EXCERSIZE INSTEAD OF CUTTING WEIGHT?

Comment by TODD about 1 year, 9 months ago

Well sorry ol matt, but i personely dont think you can beat a 100% GSP!! Sorry but that is just my opinion. I mean GSP stand up game is just to damaging and destructive, and what makes it worse is he mixes it up soo well. No wonder matt got knocked the heck out!!! That GSP that came out that day i dont think no one couldave beatin him. All all them reasons matt listed was just him tellin me i basically was bullsh!#$ my way thru fights and i was just goin thru the motions. Matt how many times must one tell you you can play basketball or tennis, or hell water polo, but you cant play “fighting” especially when your about to engage full throttle with someone who is not scared of you and wants to rip you apart and take your belt. Now i am not saying that GSP cant be beat but he is good him and matt, but i cant wait to see a 100% matt hughes and a 100% GSP go at it, god that fight would be so great

If things don’t work out in the welterweight division, Matt Hughes should cut some weight and join the lightweight division.

Comment by BRADY about 1 year, 9 months ago

I personally think Matt Hughes is just fine in the welterweight division. Some say that the first match ended because Matt caught GSP sleeping. Even so, anything can happen in a match. I personally think that Matt went in to that match, and didn’t even fight his game AT ALL. Georges is a great fighter. Maybe as good as Matt, but I don’t think so. I have been to the MFS camp. I have seen them train. I have hung out with there best on a personal level. I think for anyone to say that any MFS Elite fighter at Matts age, and accomplishments, is crazy. I can’t believe that anyone would say his time has passed. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you Brady!

A legend never dies….just gets inducted in the hall of fame.

Matt may not have the hunger he once had, but he definately still has the talent, and is in great shape.

Anyone that underestimates him has already lost.

……..again, UFC.com brings clarity to this arguement:

“Hughes, with seven defenses and two non-title wins over two reigns is the leader, followed by his mentor, Pat Miletich, with three defenses, and the foursome of Carlos Newton, BJ Penn, Georges St-Pierre, and Matt Serra, none of whom have heard Bruce Buffer say “and still UFC Welterweight Champion.”

“But when it comes down to it, even with his losses to Penn and GSP (whom he also holds wins over), there is no champion at 170 pounds who has a prayer of competing with Hughes’ resume. Look at the numbers. 9-2 in title fights, with wins over Penn, St-Pierre, Frank Trigg (twice), Sean Sherk, Newton, and Mach Sakurai.”

“He has non-title wins over Royce Gracie, Joe Riggs, and Chris Lytle, and in fights against his fellow champions (including lightweight boss Sherk and former middleweight champ Dave Menne), he is 6-2.”

“St-Pierre’s recent loss to Serra only magnified Hughes accomplishments and how hard it is to stay on top once you get there.”

…………a REAL legend never dies……..

according to MMA Insider:

- White said Matt Serra’s next fight (and first title defense) will be against Matt Hughes as part of the TUF 6 finale. Serra and Hughes will be the coaches on TUF 6.
