What’s Up With Chuck?

March 1st, 2007 | by Dr J

Don’t know how many of you have seen this video, but had an interview today with WFAA, a Dallas, TX television station. The interview was to promote Frank Miller’s new movie 300 which is one of Chuck’s sponsors.

Just watch the video and see what you make of it. I really have no idea. Was Chuck stoned, drunk, sleepy?? Tommy Morrison?? I have no idea. Just watch it and see what you think.

Click here to watch the Chuck Liddell interview… (sorry its on any video sites where I can embed it directly here)

Here are interviewer, Gary Cogill’s words about the interview after the fact

Liddell is not in the film (nor is he even associated with the film), so it was more than a stretch to even have Liddell on the show. But as a film critic, I’m more than curious, and had seen the film the day before. (For the record, it’s ultra-violent and interesting.)

Liddell showed up in our green room a few minutes before the interview around 9:30 a.m. I was immediately informed that he was mumbling and not terribly coherent.

Welcome to live television.

Still, I’m confident in my ability to make a difficult conversation work.

I was wrong this time. Here’s exactly what happened:

The Warner Bros. representative brought Liddell in with one of our producers. He needed a little help getting to the couch to settle in.

We were in the middle of a two-minute commercial break. I looked at him, and found he could barely communicate. Liddell looked shaky (at best) and could barely open his eyes.

“Is he ill? Does he need medicine?” I wondered.

With all these things are going through my head, I turned around and looked at co-host Brenda Teele about 20 seconds before we went live on the air and rolled my eyes, meaning: “Oh, my God; this could be difficult.”

Three. Two. One.

“Welcome back everyone, he is the current UFC…”

As I introduced Chuck Liddell and asked the first question, his answers were almost too distorted to understand. I needed an interpreter.

More importantly, I’m starting to panic. “How can I end this one-way conversation?”

And then it happened.

In the middle of another question, Chuck Liddell fell asleep on the air. He closed his eyes, breathed a little sigh, and I asked him if he was OK.

He woke up quickly, and started mumbling some more answers—most of them not making any sense.

I’m no doctor, and I have certainly stayed out much too late on occasion before going to work, but this was different—and odd—and I felt a bit sorry for good ol’ Chuck Liddell.

Catch me at 9:30 tomorrow morning, and I’ll sound just like that….and will also take on Tommy Morrison!

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

9:30 is not that early in the morning and it is part of his job for his sponsers. Looks more than sleepy if you ask me.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

I take that back…….sorry Tommy.

I would never get in the ring with two time world heavyweight boxing champion and co-star of the movie Rocky V.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

However….he should be nothing for Chuck, even though he outpointed George Foreman 11 years ago, he’s 38 now, and has no mma experience, therefore no real competition for the ICEMAN.

If Tommy Gun wants to fight in MMA, he should start with someone easier………..like Quinton.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Oh, one more thing….Chuck may have been poking fun at Tommy, who did a real sleepy interview in the past.

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

yeah, but then again, Rocky V was the worst Rocky movie of all time.

haha

CRAP! Hope this doesn’t go to far. I like Chuck and he’s good for the sport. That’s all we need is a few tie wearing whimps saying that this is what happens when you jump in the ring and get punched repeatidly in the skull. (Course I wear a tie to work) LOL

Looks sleepy and a little drunk. Hope it wasn’t drugs… Cause I know about them too and he mighta had a combo. Good thing it wasn’t for a HUGE company…

LOL…Chuck really likes to party. Well, if he is anything like Tito, he wouldn’t be up until after noon (per Titos interview on All Access). In all seriousness, my wife took sleeping pills once that made her act like that the next morning. She seemed like she was on drugs for about an hour after she had gotten up *shrug* could be something like this.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 8 months ago

haha chuck sounds like boomhauer man

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Bro, I’m willing to bet that Chuck was acting…. That’s the only reason he would mention Tommy, because Tommy just did a “come back” interview, and he was half asleep…..get it?

You gotta remember, Chuck’s a smart dude, and really wants to fight Cro Cop.

Just remember, you heard it here first!

whoa i dont know what to say about that. i really hope it is lack of sleep or all night drink fest or something like that. i have known heroin addicts in the past who acted very similar to that when they were high. i would hate to see “hollywood” catch up to chuck and turn him in to some burned out, washed up, drug addict like so many other “stars” who end up with pockets full of money and nothing better to do. i’m not trying to say i think liddell has even done drugs befor i just know that the sport is getting huge and he is kinda the poster boy and he’s got lots of money and “friends” i’m sure and sometimes the limelight makes you go down the wrong path. so lets just hope fuzznutz theory is right and chuck took some sleeping pills the night befor or maybe a pain killer or something or even better what dennis said its all a joke and he’s just busting tommy morrison’s chops.

Here’s Chucks side of the story….

“I am sick and rundown and need to get back to training,’ Liddell emailed me this afternoon. Trainer Hackleman says Liddell has a sinus infection and took the sleep medication Nyquil at 4 AM to try and get rest.”

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

@dennis
well i hope to hell that is the real story. no matter what way you slice it, its pretty embarrassing for liddell and i cant understand why his manager or agent or who ever let him go on live t.v. like that. the world is very critical of “stars” and no matter what you say about it now people are going to question what was going on with chuck that day.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@RJ

I know what you’re saying, but somehow…..

I don’t think Chuck cares what that douche-bag interviewer says or thinks.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 8 months ago

CHUCK CAN SURE SLAM THAT BEER

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

I don’t think it matters what the interviewer thinks it’s the general public. They will try to percieve the sport in a negative way if one of the main athletes does things like this.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

@mad
thats what i’m saying. the public at large can totally kill a career over stuff like this.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Guys! Remember, this is UFC……not who wants to be a millionaire.

Careers are made and unmade by KO’s, not votes.

Do either of you really think for one minute that the PPV’s will go down for Chuck’s next fight, because some ***** reporter mouths off.

NO FRICKIN WAY!

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

@dennis

no i think your right we dont get a vote on who fights and who doesnt. but what if people think chuck is some idiot drug addict loser do you think they will pay good money to see him fight and make more money that he is just going to blow on dope. i dont know if drugs have really ruined any mma fighters careers yet but its happened in most other sports and i’m sure someday you’ll see it happen in mma too.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@RJ

Believe me I understand what you’re getting at, but we are talking about Chuck!

I think that it would take some major bust, catching him selling smack to girl scouts or something to undo the image he has now.

Not some douche-bag reporter calling him out for nyquil on a 300 interview in Dallas.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@Dr.J.

I’ve verified that my gravatar works everywhere but here now….

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

@dennis
yeah you and i understand that but does the suits get it!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

The only bad thing for Chuck with this nyquil thing is that maybe he can’t be the “hired gun” for interviews focusing on shet that has absolutely nothing to do with him, like in this case.

Can’t see any detrimental effect on his fighting popularity though, unless he does that in the ring.

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

It won’t have an effect on his career it will just give people like Jim Lampley and others that don’t want the UFC or MMA in general to suceed something to rag on.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Just watched a great K1 fight….REMY vs. McDonald….

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

I just watched the same fight. I love how ESPN lists K-1 as “Karate”

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Yea, ya right…. they kind of lump everything together.

Hey, while I have your attention….what about that gravatar?

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Did you notice earlier that Mark Hunt had a serious brace on his left knee?

They didn’t say, but I bet that was from Cro Cop…

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

UFC ring girls are much hotter!

Comment by bruceleesspirit about 1 year, 8 months ago

i thought it was funny as heck. they got chuck up too early. too much nyquil and pain pills. hehehahahhah go chuck go

Comment by bruceleesspirit about 1 year, 8 months ago

come to think of it….do you realize how many pain pills some of these fighters probably take…..i know i would.

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 8 months ago

HAHAHAH! Funniest crap i’ve seen in a while. Im sitting here laughing my butt off. Poor Chuck, he looks sooo out of it. I can believe the Nyquil story, he sounded congested, and really, I don’t think Chuck really cared about the interview, although he tried.

Comment by richard about 1 year, 8 months ago

i know i have drank so much that i go to bed at six wake up at eight and still feel drunk
