Ex-Champs Fight Their Way Back in UFC 68

March 2nd, 2007 | by Dr J

Here’s Brians take and predictions on this Saturday’s UFC 68.

UFC 68 brings us the return of Rich “Ace” Franklin and Matt Hughes. After they lost their titles, both fighters have been looking to get their career back on track. Dana White has helped both fighters out by setting them up with arguably slightly above-average competition. In my opinion it’s just another case of White and the UFC looking for future match-ups involving Anderson Silva and George St. Peire.

And now for my predictions. First I told you that Heath Hearing would loose by decision in his UFC debut. No one believed me, but I was completely right with Hearing going down in a unanimous decision. Then I told you that UFC 67 would bring us quick knockouts from Quinton Jackson and Cro Cop. Both happened like I said they would with Jackson winning by knockout in the second round and Cro Cop winning in the first. I called both fights down to the round. Vegas betters would love this kind of information and yet you guys get it for FREE.

Tim Silvia vs Randy Couture
Everyone knows the story surrounding Randy Couture’s comeback, unfortunately I don’t see this fight having the happy ending that Randy was hoping for. Couture left the heavyweight division because his competition had gotten too big for him. And I’m sorry to say, but Tim Silvia is one of the biggest he’ll face. Tim will take his time (as usual) and pick “The Natural” apart; ending the fight by knockout in the 4th round. Winner: Tim Silvia

Matt Hughes vs Chris Lytle
This fight should bring lots of cheers from the fans at UFC 68 as Matt Hughes is a big crowd favorite. I see Hughes going back to the style that made him one the most dominant welterweights in MMA history. Why? Because he said so. Hughes will start off standing with Lytle, only to set up the take-down. Once he finds his range he’ll take Chris Lytle to the mat and use his awesome ground-and-pound. That will set up the all anticipated Hughes vs St. Peire rubber match. After Hughes looses to GSP he’ll collectively retire and pull a Randy Coulure on all of us. Watch and see… Winner: Matt Hughes in the third

Rich Franklin vs Jason McDonald
Both of these fighters come into the Octagon with something to prove. Franklin wants to prove that his showing against Anderson Silva was NOT the real “Ace” Franklin. McDonald wants to prove that he’s really a force to be reconded with in the middleweight division. Only one can be right. Rich Franklin will continue his climb to a rematch against Silva with top rate performance in UFC 68. His hands are to pin-point accurate for McDonald and he’ll win by knock-out in the second round. Winner: Rich Franklin

That breaks down the top fights. As for the under card fights, I basically agree with Dr. J’s predictions. We’ll see Silvia win one more before he’ll likely face Cro Cop and get beat down. The same will happen to Hughes when he faces GSP in a rubber match. I can’t say the same for Franklin. Out of all these fighters, I think he stands the best chance at holding the UFC title before the year ends.

YO DENNIS… WHAT ARE UR TAKES ON FABRICIO AND ANDREI AT UFC 70?

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@Patirck

This will be a good fight. Both are at 6′4″, comparable weight and reach.

Andrei will try to stand up. Has been knocked out before.

Fabricio will try to submit. Never been knocked out.

Could go either way, and I know you don’t want to hear this, but….
even though I’d like to see the Pitbull chalk up a win here……………
gotta go Fabricio.

Looks like Tim’s pretty confident about facing Mirko next. He wants Fedor also I think he overestimates his own skills. He may get past Randy but he should watch what he wishes for.

“I don’t want to look past anyone because Randy is a stud, but I think I match up well with Mirko “Cro Cop,” said Sylvia.

After watching Filipovic’s UFC debut against an over-matched Eddie Sanchez last month, the champ boldly stated: “I think he’s beatable, I saw some weaknesses.”

As if “Cro Cop” isn’t enough for Sylvia to bite off, he went on to make it clear that he wants to fight they guy everyone says is the best, PRIDE heavyweight champion Emelianenko. Along with fellow PRIDE fighters Josh Barnett (Pictures) and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures), Fedor and “Cro Cop” are consistently ranked ahead of the UFC champ and he is not pleased about that.

“I think I’m the best heavyweight in the world. And I think on any given day I can beat any one of those guys,” implored Sylvia. “I wanna fight Fedor the most because everyone says he is so much better than me.”

I’ll be ordering it as always. I order every UFC and Pride event that is available. Me and my friends chip in and get the fights, buy some beer and have a good time. It’s part of my monthly budget.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

You might not want to admit this, but it is very feasible that Tim beats Mirko.

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

I wouldn’t bet on it.

Comment by Dane about 1 year, 8 months ago

tim out weighed couture by 4o lbs!! either tims gonna over power randy, or randy is gonna be too quick for tim. im thinkin that tim is gonna over power though and poor randy isnt gonna walk away with the belt

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 8 months ago

No doubt crocop is a way better fighter than Tim, but look at the weight difference, when a guy outweighs you by that much, you definately cant be overconfident. Though i dont see crocop as a guy who would underestimate anyone, it will be a tough fight for both guys! i think crocop has the edge, but ill be cheering for Sylvia!

The more people hate Tim Sylvia, the more i like him! I would LOVE to see Tim beat crocop and get that well deserved respect from the mma community.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

if tim wins against couture and then goes on to beat cro cop that would be huge for him. it would get him a lot of respect as far as heavy weight top dogs goes. but i still want to see him pick up the pace of his fighting. i dont think he could use his reach against cro cop he, wouldnt be able to jab him to death. i think in a five round fight cro cop could eventually close in and finish the fight unless sylvia got more aggressive then he’s been lately. somewhere deep down inside i want to see tim sylvia do well i used to think he was awesome right up untill he got cough using steroids, i was crushed i had never heard anybody in mma getting cough befor that (i’m sure it probably did happen) and i just thought oh no not mma too! i love mma its the greatest sport ever, hand to hand combat for sport was around long befor football or base ball and i’m sure it would still be here if they were gone. i have a passion for the fight and i have a real hard time respecting those who cant play by the rules! sorry for the long *** rant boys i’m just bored and getting hyped about tomorrow.

Watching the “”"”"UFC68 countdown already this morning…..

Already purchased the fight!

Sitting on the edge of my chair……….can’t wait.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 8 months ago

yea i hear you RJ, you guys see the weigh ins? dam, why do they feel the need to boo fighters man? i dont think any fighter deserves to get booed, especially Hughes and Sylvia..

But man, Hughes is RIPPED! so was macdonald, that guys serious about this fight, Rich is gonna have his hands full with this guy. For some reason Babalu looked very skinny to me, like a stick figure man.

Its fight night baby!!

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

yes yes yall! its fight night once again (it seem to be happening more and more often not that, thats a bad thing) and man i’m hyped. i just order the p.p.v. and i’m warming up the dvd recorder.
now i’m going to make a prediction about tonights heavy weight title fight. i have nothing to back this up its just how i think the fight will go. in round 1 i think we’ll see a little feeling out by both for the first min or two. in round two and for the rest of the fight i think we’ll see couture close in and clinch and control or even get a few take downs. and at the end of the fight i think we’ll see randy will grind out a five round decision and win his third heavy weight title. why do i say this? well randy couture is a very smart man and he took this fight because he thinks he has a way to win. i couldnt see him comming back just to look foolish so he must feel good about his chances. what else make me think couture will win? well we share a first name and we both have french last name so that right there is enough to win a fight lol.
anyways boys and girls have your self a good night, kick back watch the fight and enjoy because it should be another good one!!!

Heck. Everyone’s been knockin Dean. Poor guy can’t do anything right. LOL. But yes, he should’ve stopped it…

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

Check out what perdictions that Brian guy said. Dang that guys good. I’d love to meet him and shake his hand. OH YEA! I’m him. Do I get the Franklin/McDonald fight? Since it was at the END of round 2? I said round 2, so I get it. LOL. Course the Hughes fight went to desision, but I did say it would go to the 3rd. Pretty close……….

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

hmmmmmmmm,

I don’t remember any traingle predictions…

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

What triangle predictions are ya talking about? Are we watching the same fights??

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

Thought that was a “head-n-arm choke”? Yea, but if I would’ve written about that fight, I would’ve predicted it. LOL

I’m just jokin guys. I just like seein if I can pick ‘em down to the ‘T’.

Yea, I don’t like the “Back in the Saddle Again” either. I’m a little worried about ol’ Randy. Fraid he may go down earlier than round 4. But I’m be rutin for him!

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

WOW! Randy rocked him!

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

I saw Tim start to cry when Randy had him down…LOL! He really was complaining. Well your the bigger guy. Get out of it!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@Patrick

Randy is the MAN. He completely handled Tim the whole 5 rounds…………25 minutes……….40 # lighter………….12″ shorter reach!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

This is one time that I’m VERY glad I was wrong!

Comment by Jason Gatties about 1 year, 8 months ago

As I said in another post, who’s laughing now???

http://www.gatties.us/?p=190

Couture via decision, just as predicted. I should bring back my MMA blog, I’ve been on fire of late.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

well i guess i redeemed my self a bit with that pick of couture (read post #18) the only thing i didnt see comming was sylvia getting dropped on his *** the first punch. i didnt expect randy to stand that much by his own choice but i guess when he rock him early it might have helped him get the balls to trade with sylvia. i knew couture could grind out the win but that was a domination. what else can i say….the old school is back on top.
p.s. randy couture, randy st.croix…..must be a winner!!! lol

Comment by Brian about 1 year, 8 months ago

@ Jason Gatties

You also picked Lytle over Hughes.

Comment by aFan about 1 year, 8 months ago

Randy just complicates things in the HW division…which is very nice..
before everyone was just witing for Mirko to take the belt from Tim….now it can be Randy vs Arlovski or Randy vs Mirko…Tim needs maybe two fights to be number one contender again in a deep division….maybe Tim vs Vera or Tim vs Hearing fights

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 8 months ago

i dont think we will see sylvia vs. vera any time soon. i also wouldnt say the heavy weight div. is deep just yet but its getting there. i would like to see both couture vs. arlovski and sylvia vs. herring and then cro cop could clean up who ever was the winners are.

Comment by DayDay about 1 year, 8 months ago

Randy is the man, and sylvia didnt stand a damn chance, and after the first punch his pride and confidence juss droppppeddd and u can tell throughout the fight…
hats off to couturee..

Comment by richard about 1 year, 8 months ago

couture sylvia should have been a no brainer for sylvia
