Signed UFC Fight Poster Auction

March 13th, 2007 | by Dr J

I wrote last week about Evan Tanner and his new “fight house” that he is involved with. Well, Evan has put up a signed UFC poster on eBay to help raise money for the house. This is a framed poster from UFC 36 and his signed by Randy Couture, Andre Arlovski, Matt Lindland, and Evan Tanner.

UFC 36 Poster

So if you are interested this is cool piece of UFC memoribilia or you just want to help out Evan’s cause, this seems to be a great piece of UFC history signed by four of the top fighters in the world.

Man, I really find it funny how occasionally as soon as I post a new article, other UFC fan sites post something exactly the same. And I’m not talking about the general news that everyone has access too, but something like this post for this eBay auction.

Check out the following link from UFCJunkie.com

http://ufcjunkie.com/2007/03/13/bid-on-evan-tanners-ufc-36-poster/

Very weird how last week I post about Evan and his new foundation and then the same type of post shows up on their site. Now I make a post about the eBay auction after I get the info from Evan, and about an hour later, the same post shows up on their site again.

Kind of comical if you ask me…

Don’t be upset……..this is the best form of flattery!

People copy my predictions all the time……

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

Oh, I’m not upset at all. I do find it quite funny.

It would just be nice to see at least a link back or something. Whenever I take a story I find somewhere else I post a link back to the original source, I’m not going to claim it as my own.

Of course, there is “common knowledge” stuff that everyone has the same info on regarding fight announcements, payouts, etc… and we all post the same stuff on that. But something like this is pretty obvious, especially with the time.

Not the first time its, happened and it wont be the last. I’m not upset at all though.

and you’re right about people stealing your picks… hahahaha

Do you honestly believe we’re taking your content?

UFCjunkie.com posts at least five to six stories everyday. Every single day. Of course there’s going to be some overlap with your site. We cover everything you do — and tons more.

And as far as the two stories you referenced:

Evan Tanner’s Foundation
Evan Tanner’s UFC 36 Auction

It’s very obvious that you have Evan as a friend on MySpace and got the news from there. It’s not as though you uncovered some buried news item. UFCjunkie.com has a MySpace account with nearly 700 friends (including Evan), and I check the MySpace bulletins and blog entries almost hourly for the latest scoop.

So why did our posts about the auction appear at the same time? Because we both read about in on MySpace at the time. It’s no more complicated than that.

The auction story, especially, makes perfect sense for our site. We list nearly every eBay action that the Ryan Bennett Memorial Foundation hosts. With more than 10,000 daily visitors and nearly 30,000 daily page views, UFCjunkie.com knows that it’s one of the best ways we can use our site’s popularity to help some nonprofit ventures. Go through our archives, and you’ll see tons of auctions listed.

The sites I read on a regular basis can be found on our “Links” section. That’s where we get our news, and those are the sites that we cite and quote time and time again. We have never, ever passed off news as our own — or even gotten a story idea from another site — without referencing that site. You can go back through out 500+ posts and see that this is very obvious. The only reason I even knew about this post was because our Wordpress plugin — Shortstat — was showing some incoming traffic from this page.

It would be very easy for me to say that you simply did the same thing — came to UFCjunkie.com, and then wow, those same stories suddenly appeared on your site. (For example, UFCjunkie.com broke that news of Silva vs. Marquardt, but I don’t see you citing us anywhere. And what about those UFC 68 salaries? Did you call the state commission yourself and get those like we did — or did you simply take them from another site? Because I don’t see a source listed.)

I could complain about all of that, but it wouldn’t be fair for me to do that because we simply cover everything UFC-related, so there’s bound to be some overlap.

I do commend you for putting your own personal spin and commentary on every story. That’s why I can understand your frustration, though I feel it’s completely unwarranted in this case. Try reading ufcmedia.com and ufcdaily.com — sites that rip off UFCjunkie.com and UFCmania.com daily — almost word for word, and then you’ll understand why we have no tolerance for people not only stealing content but also story ideas. Hell, they even stole may damn disclaimer, too.

Again, I understand your frustration and even the humor of all of this. But like I said, it’s unwarranted in this case.

Off subject but did anyone else watch the IFL Battleground last night on network TV. I was a bit disappionted at the way they percieved the sport to a new audience. In the first couple of minutes they showed Wes Simms being choked out with a sound over of a heart beat that flatlines as he passes out. Then they show a guy being put on a stretcher like it’s a good thing. The announcer throughout the show illudes to the fact someone will leave on a strecher tonight kind of trying to make it the climax of the show. I think this is a bad way to present the sport and especially for the first time on network TV. They even had a 911 call voice over as the stretcher scene was being played. I was never a big IFL fan but as a fan of MMA I watch any MMA available but they are putting a bad taste in peoples mouths with these kind of stunts. The fights were edited even though it was a two hour show. I hope people that seen this for the first time don’t portray all of MMA like this. I think the IFL did MMA an injustice with the way they presented the sport last night.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

@MAD

Don’t blame you, and I agree…….wanted to watch, but forgot.

IFL not that important, but I must admit that I’d watch it if I happened upon it, but will not source it out.

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

@UFC JUNKIE,

Take it easy, as I stated in my comments, I’m not mad or upset by any of this at all. I’m not blaming you or anyone else, because I have no problem with any of this.

First off, I do not even have a myspace.com account, so no, I didn’t find any of this out from Evans myspace info.

Second, the Silva vs. Marquardt fight has been confirmed by Dana White and Rich Franklin verbally and there is no need to cite you who broke the rumor or any other news source, because it was open information and I didn’t get it from your site. If I had gotten it from your site, I would have cited you as I do with other sites.

And yes, I get the Fighter payouts from the NSAC, CSAC, and Ohio Commission directly not from another news source, thanks for asking though. And there is a source listed, the commission themselves. I dont have to cite another website because I didn’t get it from another site.

I am not upset or frustrated by anything, I am just making an observation. I read your site and have even dealt with you before regarding fighters sponsorships if you remember. I know that there are probably 50 sites out there that plagarize articles word-for-word from your site, my site and a whole handful of other sites and the people that read your site and my site know this already.

I think you misunderstood the point of my comment completely and have taken offsense to something you shouldn’t have. So please, take a step back and settle down on it.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 8 months ago

about this whole website thing, none of the websites are any kind of “official” mma sites like ufc.tv or anything, and not affilitaed with any real mma organization, so why argue about this?

These are pages made by FANS, for FANS. I dont even know why you guys are contacting the NSAC for payouts and all that, they must get sick of giving the same info over and over to 50 diff sites man. lol

Big sites like sherdog that make people pay for subscriptions have the kind of budget to do real, investigative reporting, set up interviews with fighters, etc..

Lets not get it twisted, personally i dont care where the info comes from, lets just talk about mma.

i seen that sh*it last night and im calling it sh*it because of what u said how dare they portrait this sport to be so brutal like someone is going to die with the heart beat going out or when the took the lion out on a strecher and the kept announcing that by the end of the show someone is going to the hospital and the whole two hours the kept on saying it and saying it plus it was all old fights but thats something else but for now i say bbbbboooooooooooooooooo IFL

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

Finally the UFC has posted on their site that UFC 70 will be shown on Spike fpr free. This is awsome I’m not sure if they are going to tape delay it or not. I had heard that they were going to show it live at 2pm eastern but some are saying that they are going to tape delay and start at 8 so I’m not sure. Either way it’s free and a great card. That will make two free live shows on spike in April if you include Ultimate fight night. I hope the UFC has more trouble landing the HBO deal.

Comment by MAD about 1 year, 8 months ago

I’m glad someone else was able to watch the IFL destroy MMA’s image. The UFC and Pride have gone to great lengths to shed the blood sport image and make this the greatest sport around now. It took the IFL two hours to bring it back down. They didn’t even mention the skill required or dedication top athletes in this sport have. It’s a shame that they want to percieve MMA the way they did. I watched their fights because they were free but I don’t think I can really support them any more after that. Good thing they don’t have that great of figters and really the shows are not that good anyway.

har har… don’t back peddle like Chuck did in his second fight with Babalu, he won the fight, but he did back peddle pretty hard before he landed his shot…..

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

@DENNIS,

I’m not censoring or back-peddling at all. I didn’t realize that a myspace bulletin was put out by Evan Tanner today about the eBay auction. Since I dont’ have any myspace.com account I had no idea that info was put out this morning.

So, I made a mistake in my comment earlier today and I’m admitting to it and correcting it. That’s all. It was an honest mistake, and stuff like that has happened before (if you all remember the UFCLove.com incident from a few months back, haha). Either way, I’ve contacted the guys at UFCJunkie.com and straightened things out.

The only reason I edited the comment from earlier was just to end the discussion on the subject, because it really has nothing to do with MMA and I made a mistake in the first place. This is actually the first time I have ever edited any type of comment/article/story on MMA HQ and I feel that it is fine in this case.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 8 months ago

Sorry I had to reboot!

So……Dr. J. is it fair to say that you……..tapped out!

Just kidding. It’s your site, you can do what you want, but if it were me, I’d never “edit out” content, but instead just own up, and…..

keep on keepin’ on.

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 8 months ago

@Dennis,

You are right my friend and as you can see I have restored the comments. If I’ve never edited anything before, no need to start that bad habit now.

So, yes, I may have jumped the gun a little this morning with my first comment about UFCJunkie. If so, I take responsibility for that. Instead of tapout, we’ll say it was a loss by split decision - or whatever….

I don’t take responsibility, however, for the subsequent attacks that UFCJunkie made against MMA HQ and my connections and sources of information within the MMA community.

Comment by UFC Junkie about 1 year, 8 months ago

@Dr J

You implied in your original post that the only way we knew about the auction was through your Web site. Whether you said it outright or not, that’s what you implied and that’s how most people took it. I simply pointed that not only was that not the case, but that UFCjunkie.com would never resort to such tactics because it happens to us so often. (Check out http://ufcjunkie.com/category/ufcjunkiecom-plagiarizers/, for example)

Just to be perfectly clear, this is the bulletin that was posted by Tanner (and has been reposted by about 12 other people on MySpace to help spread the word):

The auction for the framed poster autographed by RANDY COUTURE, ANDRE ARLOVSKI, EVAN TANNER AND MATT LINDLAND is up on ebay. It’s a really nice souvenir. I almost kept it for myself, but I decided not to, because the money’s going to a good cause. Check it out, and please help spread the word.

Just copy and paste the following.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130088641022&rd=1&rd=1

Obviously, this was a hot topic this morning, so we covered it.

I assumed that this was how you heard about the auction, as well (though you explained that Tanner e-mailed you directly).

We can sum up this whole thing with your own comment: “I dont have to cite another website because I didn’t get it from another site.”

Which is exactly what happened here. We got it from MySpace, not mmahq.com.

And honestly, in the grand scheme of things, this is a pretty minor story and has already been buried by other news items.

No harm, no foul. Again, we cover 40-50 stories a week, and there’s bound to be some overlap.

We look forward to working with you in the future.

Havn’t had this much exitement in quite some time. To be honest I think Dr.J made a safe assumption about the content being lifted from this site. As his source was a direct sourced as far as he knew he was the first to publish it. UFCjunkie played it cool and just stated about where the actual information came from. So in this instance mmahq was wrong, but 9 times out of 10 thats not the case….ufcjunkie seems to understand that. No harm no foul. UFCjunkie just earned another reader by not flipping out on the HQ..which is the best mma blog on the net.
