Well, it appears that after over a week of “speculating” and “rumors,”the final official words and announcement of the sale of Pride Fighting Championships to Lorenzo and Frank Fertita will come tomorrow in Tokyo, Japan.
MMAWeekly reported today on the fact that SportsHochi, a Japanese newspaper, reported today that the Fertitas will disband Dream Stage Entertainment and start a new company to run PrideFC separate from the Zuffa-run UFC. Here is a clip from MMAWeekly.com
The Japanese newspapers reported today in Tokyo, Japan that the UFC has bought Pride. The UFC/Pride rumor has been circulating for awhile, but the deal appears to be done. One of the newspapers in Japan, SportsHochi, reported that the Fertittas, who owns Zuffa which operates the UFC, will start a new company thus disbanding DSE(Dream Stage Entertainment, which has been the company that Pride has operated under). DSE/Pride President Nobuyuki Sakikabara, who brought Pride to the United States and was successful in making the Pride brand one of the most compelling MMA promotions in the world, is reportedly resigning from his position.
The new company that Pride will operate under apparently will not be run by UFC or Zuffa, but will be it’s own entity owned by the Fertittas. Thus Pride and the UFC being run separately. But, it is being reported that the two promotions will do a joint super show once a year. SportsHochi reports that Pride 34 on 4/8 will be the last Pride show run by DSE.

The official announcment should be made tomorrow in Tokyo, Japan at the Toppongi Hills Arena.

YO DENNIS CAN U SAY FEDOR AND CRO COP 2 IN THE OCTAGON????? HOW THE HELL DO THE FERTITAS HAVE SO MUCH CASH???
man i actually excited to hear about that super show the matches could be now well see who the best fighters in the world are
WOW
The UFC finished the MMA world take over. We are going to see some great fights now. I was talking about the superfights every year and it seems they are thinking the same thing. Fedor just signed with Pride so his contract should be part of the sale. This is going to open up a huge list of potential world class show downs. Shogun, Arona, Silva, Gomi, Kang the list goes on. Now we will truely see who the best in the world is. It will be a long time before the UFC has any ral competition again. I’m personally excited about this just because there will not be any reason that all the fights the fans want to see can’t happen. I wonder if the Fertitas want to try and manage the new promotion theirselves and leave Dana to keep the UFC going. The Super fights once a year are going to be crazy!
YO DENNIS U THINK THEY WILL HAVE MORE EVENTS LIKE 2 A MONTH????
@MAD,
Just because PrideFC as a company was purchased, it doesn’t mean that all fighters under contract with PrideFC are now owned by the Fertitas. It depends on how the contracts are written up. So you can’t guarantee any of these fights, although you can probably assume the Fertitas or Zuffa will sign most of them.
finally! and i very glad they are still gonna be run separate from each other and put together super fights. i dont know if we will get more shows per month beside maybe pride having shows more often then they do now. if they hold too many fights in a month there would be a lot of fighters with injuries and fighters would get burned out too fast fighting 10 times a year. the ufc employs about 200 fighters and if they have 10 fights per p.p.v. thats 240 fighters they need to fight per year. now if they were to put on two shows per month that number of fighters needed would double so top guys like liddell, st.pierre, couture, would be fighting every second month and i couldnt see liddell still being champ if he had fought 6 or 7 fights last year instead of 3 or 4. look at guys like wanderlei who pride expects to fight on every card people are unsure if he will ever be the same fight he was i dont want that to happen to every fighter who is worth watching and i also dont really want to spend $40 a month to watch a card of nobodies because all the top fighters are beat to sh*t.
fedor will hold both ufc and pride titles at the same time at some point soon (i know thins is a no brainer)
I know but they will be the premeir MMA organizations and I would think the best fighters will want to sign with either of them. I’m sure Elite and Bodog will try to get their share of bids in but ultimately I think the cream of the crop fighter will end up in either of the two promotions. Even if a few great fighters end up on smaller venues they will be fighting B level oponents. Being a fan I hope things work out and we do see the superfights between the promotions once a year. I think the UFC management will do a better job of promoting and getting the american public to know some of the fighter as well as they do the UFC stars.
I loaded the website today hoping to hear some new news about this topic and fell off my chair when I saw this. I think the FERTITAS READ EVERY SINGLE COMMENT WE WRITE ON HERE. This is absolutley insane, I can’t believe this.
So I’m desperately trying to buy UFC 71 tickets, but as of today (Mon. 2/26), only pre-sale tickets are available to UFC Fight Club Members, which really sucks since I am not a member. Anyone have any suggestions?
I can’t believe the guys here aren’t going crazy over this. Everywhere else on the web people can’t stop talking about this. I just wanted to see what everyone here thinks about this but it’s been a little quite today considering the magnitude of the news and how the MMA scene is going to change. What are your guys thoughts on this?
i just want to see great fights but there saying the feratitas brothers own pride weres dana at did they include him in this ?
@MAD
We have been commenting on this all week. Dennis blew the top off this one last week bro. we all gave our opinions for about 6 days. Now it’s official, but it doesn’t change what I posted previously, you can find threads of different opinions of this on the UFC 71 Quinton Jackson post as well as the Diego gets busted for pot post, (neither of those are quotes). I think the UFC will slowly monopolize the MMA market and raise the price on fights. I also think this will flush out a lot of fighters in the end, and competition will be limited just as it is now after the “rush of new mega fights” ends. Just about everyone else is subdued by the hope for some big name fights.
but if there going to keep the organizations separate maybe nothing will change just that there is no bad blood between these organizations anymore so that fighters can come and go between both without much hassle
Hey Gents!
Are we having fun yet?
Don’t worry I think the mafia will keep thing on the straight and level road as always…. just like boxing and gambling in Vegas right?
Really though, sounds like they want to keep two distinct programs going, with the UFC dominating Vegas, and eventually every state in North America.
Then PrideFC on the global scale, focused on the Asian market, which is quite lucrative.
What I’m most curious about is how they control the payouts for Fights as well as PPV’s and DVD’s, royalties, etc.
I can see that some fighters may not ever cross the lines because the rules and rings are so different.
I’m positive that even though Dana may not be on the pricipals list, he’s been so successful lately, that he will likely be the idea man….and compensated heavily for bringing Pride into the main stream like he did for UFC>….
Someday,,,, we have to admit the MMA will go bad, but until then, we are going to have the best damn ride in history!!!
i fully agree with dennis mma will take another fall sooner or later. hopefully later but i am very happy that i can say i was there to see the major upswing. i got to see the very first ufc event in 1993 and i have been hardcore about it ever since. back when called it no holds bared “kick boxing” and i remember think to my self what the hell is ju jitsu and this little gracie dude can snap your arm off in the blink of an eye and he can choke you out even faster. up intill the ufc came along i was a huge boxing fan and wanted nothing more then to be the white mike tyson but mma came along and ruined it for me (how could i watch a fight with just punching or kicking) the ufc back then was pretty much street fighting with a ref some of the fight looked a lot like fights i had in the school yard. mma opened my eyes to a whole new world of combat sports. its about as pure as any sport can be i’m sure even the cave men beat each other up for sport and you dont need any more tools then your hands and feet and your brain. i’m just so glad to see the sport becomming as big as i new it could and i hope to hell the lower my casket befor we see mma go the way of boxing.
@MMAKansas
I know that the rumors have been going around for a while but until now they were just that rumors. Alot of stuff gets spread around that is not true so I usually wait till a couple of credible sources release the news to actually believe it. I don’t think MMA will go down any time soon I’ve been reading what others are saying about this around thw web and most are viewing this as positive. It sounds like Pride will remain running pretty much as it has been but more organized. I think it’s the end of fights like Fedor vs Zuluzinho because they were kinda stupid but I think we will see more competitive fights from the Pride stars. I hope the superbowl of MMA happens and we see guys like Fedor and Big Nog in the cage. With the UFC’s power and influence I would have to think they will make this work.
First, I wonder how much the MMA “Superbowl” is going to cost us…
Second, I wonder how this is going to effect fighters salaries, because now that the Fertitas control it all, they have a much larger selection of top notch fighters who would agree to fight for less money than another fighter just so that they can make their money.
Ex. If a guy like Fedor or any other big name does not get his demands met, where does he go to fight now?
This of course in no way implies that I’m not absolutely thrilled by this move in the short run. I just hope it all plays out in our favors too, as fans.
were does he go is a good question there has to be choices for us as fans this is a good thing but for the fighters it doesnt look so good
i think if you started to see names like fedor, wanderlei, liddell, cro cop pop up in other places like KOTC or bodog fight they would start to get much bigger. bodog fight is going to have fedor emelianenko vs. matt lindland that is some what of a big fight and i will watch it but i dont know if a lot of other people will just because a lot of people dont care to see aleksander emelianenko vs. eric pele or eddie alvarez vs. nick thompson but if they had some bigger names for undercards more people would watch. unless the p.p.v. is very cheap i dont see a lot of people watching.
