Pride Lightweight 2007 Grand Prix

April 10th, 2007 | by Dr J

Pride 2007 Lightweight Grand Prix

Stephan, over at mmatoronto.com, had a nice catch yesterday regarding the upcoming Pride Lightweight 2007 Grand Prix.

If you take a look at the Pride LWGP poster, you will see the faces of both Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez. As Stephan noted, the Pride LWGP traditionally has been held at a 160 lbs. weight limit, but now with the recent purchase of Pride by the Fertita’s it looks like the new weight limit will perhaps be at 170 lbs.

The other fighters to appear on the poster are:

  • Takanori Gomi
  • Luiz Buscape
  • Marcus Aurelio
  • Luiz Azevedo
  • Gilbert Melendez
  • Joachim Hansen
  • Tatsuya Kawajiri
  • Mitsuhiro Ishida
  • Shin’ya Aoki
  • Hayato “Mach” Sakurai

The opening round of the Lightweight Grand Prix is currently scheduled to begin in May. With Diego just having fought this past April 7, I wonder if he truly will be fighting in the Grand Prix; perhaps he will just fight on the second night of the opening round?

LOL Doc,

Don’t know who Sarah is, but it’s obvious she is a pro.

She got the blood stains idea from me though.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

…and who says that you have to stick to one design?

It’s your site, so you could decide to use ideas, or portions of different shirts to come up with “The Immaculate T Shirt” design….

…or T-I-T-S for short…..

LMFAO

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 7 months ago

haha. no rules that say I have to do anything.

I just didn’t want you to miss seeing a new design put up (since you’ve been following it so closely of course). lol

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

just don’t follow up with shorts with MMAHQ.com across the az….

because that would just be some “Assinine Sprawl Shorts”, or…..

you get the idea………… A-S-S….

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Guess what you get if you wear the shirt and shorts together?

YO DENNIS DO THEY STILL HAVE LINLAND #1

Comment by Big J about 1 year, 7 months ago

I don’t think an early May fight will be a problem for Diego since he didn’t really fight on April 7. He should be well rested for this.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

I’d like to see them all sign up… BJ, Jens, KOS, Luke, GSP, Serra, etc…

and you might also notice that koscheck jump right passed diego and b.j. penn with his win over sanchez

Comment by Amir about 1 year, 7 months ago

I see Hughes but that doesn’t look like Diego

Comment by The Fight Critic about 1 year, 7 months ago

I would love to see those two fighting in the PRIDE GP. I think they would put on some excellent and exciting fights.

Re: MMAWeekly Welterwight Rankings…
Koschek is better than BJ Penn all of a sudden, how? Look at their opponents’ caliber and their history versus their opponents. How can you put Koschek above Penn??? After Koschek beats Hughes, which Penn was well on his way to doing before injuring himself, then he deserves to be ranked above Penn.

Comment by Amir about 1 year, 7 months ago

I think you guys are not considering ring activity. BJ Penn has not fought since UFC 63 in September of 06. GSP and Serra fought 3 days ago. As soon as BJ fights again, I’m sure it will change. What I’m saying is that these rankings must also be based on time between fights.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@the fight critic

I totally agree with you, but the bigger question is……….drumrole..

How can a guy that’s never knocked out anyone in his ten years of fighting, win one fight and jump to the top of the list?

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

MY TOP 5 LIST OF THE UGLIEST DUDES IN MMA FIGHTING.

#1. WANDERLEI SILVA
#2.TIM SYLVIA
#3. MATT LINLAND
#4.GEORGE ST. PIERRE’S TEETH
#5.I DONT KNOW BOYS WHO DO U THINK NUMBER FIVE SHOULD BE???

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@Amir

Ok, lets talk activity…..Does Serra have anywhere close to half the activity of the rest of the list?

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Matt definately goes up to #2…

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Munson ain’t so pretty either.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

without a doubt……

Matt Hughes is still #1 of all time, that is until somebody can even come close to his record….

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

@DENNIS ITS SIMPLE … I HAVE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ALL THOSE DUDES OVER THERE ARE REALLY HIGH!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

and for you Amir……….also his activity.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@Patrick

LOL, yea they must be doping it up with Diego….

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Hey Doc,

…as for T-shirts, I really like the idea of using Sarah’s front with my back!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

man I forgot to list in the Grand Prix hopefuls……Joe Stevenson, Melvin Guillard, Roger Huerta, Spencer Fisher, & Kenny Florian!

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

…and the Diaz bros.

Comment by Amir about 1 year, 7 months ago

@ Dennis,

He fought 3 days ago and beat the #1 welterweight in the world, that has to count for something. When GSP beat down Hughes, he overtook the #1 spot too. And, we were talking about Kos over ranking BJ for that matter. What I;’m saying is that timing has a lot to do with the rankings. It depends on when everyone fights during the year. If Matt Hughes and Diego fight in this upcoming Grand Prix, it will also have a big impact on the ranks.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

LOL MUNSON KINDA IS UGLY …. DIEGO SMOKED TOO MUCH DRO TO FIGHT SATURDAY……

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@Amir

Sure, anytime you win a fight, it should help a fighter gain in the standings, like Nick Diaz for example. Even though he beat Gomi, he did not jump to #1, but did gain in rank.

That’s more realistic.

Not going from almost total obscurity to #1 for one fight.

Half the guys on the list have beat Serra!

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

HERES WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN… DANA WHITE IS GONNA FIGURE OUT A WAY TO GET THAT BELT OUT OF SERRAS HANDS… NO ONE LIKES SERRA…..

KOS FIGHTS SERRA AND WINS… KOS A CHAMP LOL
MATT AND GEORGE…. THEN GEORGE AND KOS…. THEN
GSP IS THE ****** MAN AGAIN

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

OK YALL THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN

SERRA WILL TAKE ON KOZ …. WINNER KOZ
MATT WITH TAKE ON GSP…. WINNER GSP
THEN GSP WILL TAKE ON KOZ

AND GSP WILL BE THE F–KING MAN AGAIN

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

going by the MMAweekly book, if Josh Haynes gets a lucky punch on the Cro Cop, he automatically is rated the #1 HW fighter in the world….

NO, it just means he holds the belt…. that is IF it’s a title fight.

…other than that, he’s still sux as Josh Haynes with a lucky punch.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

All I’m trying to prove is that Serra has the belt in his trophy case, as Gatties put it, but it doesn’t necessarily make him the best in the world…..or in his case, even in the top ten!

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

YO THIS CARLOS CONDIT KID… IS HE GOOD WHATS HIS RECORD?

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

…and prove once and for all, that those dumbazez at mmaweekly, are as Patrick put so eloquently………HIGH.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Better record than Serra………..and more active!

Carlos Condit
Record 20 - 4 - 0 (Win - Loss - Draw)
Wins 9 (T)KOs (45.00%)
11 Submissions (55.00%)

Losses 3 Submissions (75.00%)
1 Decisions (25.00%)

Association Fit NHB
Height 6′1 (185cm)
Weight 170lbs (77kg)

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Just a matter of time………… DANA WILL CONTROL THEM ALL!!!

MUWAHAHAHAHA.

Comment by Amir about 1 year, 7 months ago

Serra has been fighting frequently (including TUF show). As for your comment: “Half the guys on the list have beat Serra!”

He lost to Karo and BJ (that’s 2 out of 10 not 5 out of 10)
in very close fights for that matter. If you don’t want to give the guy respect because he is small or doesn’t fight the way you would like him to fight, just say that. I for example, hate the way Matt Hughes fights by taking guys down and laying on top of them forever and has absolutely no striking skills. A knucklehead who admitted he doesn’t even have a strategy going into a fight. Serra knew all along what he was going to do, and he did.

Comment 24: As per this dandy of yours…”How can a guy that’s never knocked out anyone in his ten years of fighting, win one fight and jump to the top of the list?”

Are you serious? Serra has won his fights by submissions and a few close decisions. That’s like asking how come Liddell has never submitted anyone? it’s not what he does. And actually Matt Serra has been fighting for 7 years not 10…and this was not one fight…like I stated before, he had the momentum of being in the public eye from TUF show.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 7 months ago

Yea i agree with amir, Serra is a vet whos been around and really, hes overcome alot of adversity to get where hes at. BUT i agree with Dennis in the sense that he is definately NOT the #1 welterweight in the world. I got pure respect for Serra, but im sure he himself wouldnt say hes the best in the world hehe hes a humble guy and im sure he wouldnt presume to make a statement like that. Like patrick said those guys are high heh

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

NO WAY SERRAS RIGHT HAND WAS ALL LUCK

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@BV…. nicely said…. as usual

@Amir
You’re presuming that I don’t like Serra…. I really admire the guy, and have been recognizing his knowledge of MMA for many years.

However, he’s not only been fighting for 7 years! Just because the first date you see on Sherdog is August 1999, you are making a bad assumption.

That’s when he won the the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gold medal at the 1999 World Championships, not when he “started” fighting. He is a submission master….Renzo’s #1.

But……still no where close to being the best in the world by any means…

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

OR U KNOW WHAT I BET DIEGO CONVINCED GSP TO TAKE A COUPLE HITS OF THE MARY JANE AND IT SCREWED UP GEORGE CUZ HE NEVER DOES IT TO THE POINT WHERE HE WANT MESSED UP LOL…

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

MATT SERRA DESERVES TO BE IN THE NUMBER 10 SPOT MAYBE EVEN NUMBER 9 NOT NUMBER 1 LOL

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 7 months ago

I would like to see Henderson fight Anderson Silva or Rich Franklin, that would be an awesome fight.. get some agressive competition going on in that division because really, it’s not too exciting at the moment…

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

I would definately be interested in watching Hollywood totally destroy the spider.

Comment by Stevo about 1 year, 7 months ago

SERRA WILL LOSE HIS FIRST TITLE DEFENSE.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

I AGREE STEVEO

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Thank you Stevo. That’s all I’ve been trying to say.

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 7 months ago

These are fights worth paying bucks for, they don’t even need to be title fights, like I would like to see a rematch of Penn vc St. Pierre .. and perhaps Kendall Grove vs Matt Hughes, (perhaps in a year or so when Kendall develops a little more).

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year, 7 months ago

@@@@@@@@@@@DENNIS

YO DUDE Y DO YOU THINK GSP LOST HIS FIRST TITLE DEFENSE?????????????

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

@PAtrick

….very simple mon ami, he let Serra fight his fight.

…the same reason Hughes, Franklin and Silvia lost.

If Rush would have set the pace, he would have won.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Just look back at the tapes….. look close at the champion’s eyes and facial expressions. In every case, they had the “deer in the headlights” expression.

Like it was their first fight…clearly, none of their heads were in the octagon.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

I think that’s the real reason for the ICEMAN’s winning streak of knockouts….

Chuck’s lets his opponent believe that they are setting the pace, so they wind up inevitably charging into his defense, and getting knocked out.

Chuck’s pace IS his defense……so his opponents never really get to set the pace from face up into the lights.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year, 7 months ago

yup! like dennis said, they didnt fight their fight, you also said that in another post dennis, and really thats wats up. YOU NEED A GAMEPLAN, i think GSP went into that fight prepared for anything and he was waiting for the right opportunity, that was the wrong gameplan for this fight. Hughes too, he just went out there prepared for anything and waited to see what would happen. you have to KNOW what will happen and MAKE it happen! go out there and do what you have already planned to do, even if your a better fighter, if you dont have a strategy your at a disadvantage.

Comment by Dennis about 1 year, 7 months ago

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year, 7 months ago

Right before GSP got knocked silly he was watching the clock. I think he was planning to fight a longer fight, maybe into the 3rd or 4th round and his mindset was on that, he was ready for the round to end and Serra was ready to win the fight in that round. The other observation I made, and it could be absolutely nothing, was that GSP spit a ton of water in the octagon, (as is his “thing”) before the fight, and he slipped during the fight, could he have actually slipped on the water he spit before the fight? Funny if that happened.

Comment by richard about 1 year, 7 months ago

i dont know but serra shouldnt be number one but did any one see the african assasin ko arona the guys a beast next josh thompson in my opinion has to be the sorriest sack hes big for nothing i dont know i just hate that guy thought i should say it here

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 7 months ago

i know this is going back a few posts but i was wondering about this so i had to ask. dennis mentioned the lightweights he would like to see from the ufc and said all ufc lightweights but the pride lightweight div. is 160lbs and your more likely to ufc welterweights then lightweights get in to it. i was just wondering if you just wanted to see those guys fight in it or were you just having a brain ****?

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 7 months ago

i think the line up they have now is pretty good but i would like to see a few more ufc fighters just because i think pride has real good fighters in there that dont match up well against hughes or sanchez. i think melendez or gomi could knock out hughes. also i noticed that there is not enough fighters on the poster for a GP they need four less or four more. lets hope its four more and they are from the ufc that would be 6 ufc and 10 pride. my picks from ufc would be hughes, sanchez, parisyan, st.pierre, huerta, and joe stevenson.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year, 7 months ago

@dr j
do you have any word on when sherk is gonna be finished building his new bionic shoulder and defend that gawd damn lightweight title?

@RJ
according to “The Shreveport Times” March 17, Sean states that he’ll be ready to fight in a month or so…..

Rough translation: Come April….just waiting to beat up on GSP.
