Paulo Filho, the Pride Bushido “legend” and a member of Brazilian’s Top Team, announced yesterday with Tatame magazine that he is close to signing a deal with the WEC. This will be an excellent signing for the WEC and its a great pickup for the organization. Filho, who is currently 14-0, is a submission specialist and would have been a great asset to the UFC. Adding Filho to the WEC improves the WEC’s middleweight division greatly, as Filho is widely considered one of the top three middleweights in the world.
The black belt from BTT Paulão Filho guaranteed that he is close to do a deal with the event WEC, World Extreme Challenge, which is leaded by UFC. “I am making the deal with the WEC organization. I will close three or four bouts with the event, a parallel one of the UFC. I am pretty gladâ€, said Paulão, who is training hard with Josuel Distak for two months.
Paulão said that will also probably fight until July, but for that he needs to get the weight. “I have to get the weight until July so I will be able to fight. I am 95kg, but I am only doing the technician training, when I will be doing the physical training and take care of the foods I will get the right weightâ€, said Paulão.
According to Filho’s statement, it appears that he will have at least one fight in the UFC which is a very good thing in my opinion. Hopefully we’ll see Filho start off in the WEC and move to the UFC quickly where he can easily contend for and/or hold the Middleweight belt for a while. Another great signing by Zuffa.

GO PAULAO
YO DOC WHATS UP WITH THAT NEVER SUBMIT MOVIE????
Not sure Patrick. I dont know when its supposed to be released.
“According to Filho’s statement, it appears that he will have at least one fight in the UFC which is a very good thing in my opinion.”
I’m not sure about that. The way I read his statement, he’s saying that the UFC is a “parallel” promotion to the UFC, meaning that they have the same ownership and run side by side.
I hope he gets his shot in the UFC, though.
@Jeff,
Good point. Now that I read it in that light I can see what you (and Paulo) are probably saying. It would surprise me if the UFC signed Filho or any fighter to a split WEC / UFC contract, especially considering how they stated that they want to keep the two separate.
Filho belongs in the UFC, not the WEC however, and I can’t envision the UFC keeping him there long.
isnt wec like triple a ball and the ufc the majors so if this guys considered the top three why would he go to the minor league first if he has proved himself already?
this guy is very good 14-0 in MMA and 6 wins by submission.
He’s only 5′8 I think but very dangerous…..I think he was offered to fight Franklin but Franklin’s camp turned down the fight sayingthey had no interest in fighting Filho, instead they wanted Okami
franklin is smart for not taking this fight another lose might be bye bye ufc and hello WEC
I think for now it’s good that Paul Filho is in the WEC.. I mean if we put ALL the great talent directly in the UFC, other orgs would crash and fall, and the UFC paid too much money to have the WEC just die….
I am glad they are building up a competitive organization it breeds good results and title for title ppv matches are really exciting..
