UFC Fight Night 10 Preview

June 11th, 2007 | by Dr J

UFC Fight Night 10The MMA-loaded month of June continues tomorrow night with another UFC Fight Night. There are several very strong fights on this card, and personally I’m looking forward more to this event than the upcoming UFC 72.

Main Card

Sam Stout vs Spencer Fisher - This rematch of a great battle from UFC 58: UFC vs Canada should be an excellent fight from start to finish. Both fighters are coming off losses in their last UFC appearances; Fisher losing by KO to lightweight #1 contender Hermes Franca, Stout losing by submission to Kenny Florian. When Fisher and Stout fought back in March of 2006 at UFC 58, Fisher took the fight on only 2 days notice after Stouts original opponent, Kenny Florian, was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a back injury. Stout ended up winning that fight by split decision, but personally I would have given the nod to Fisher. If you haven’t seen that fight before, do yourself the favor and go back and watch it; you’ll enjoy it.

Sam Stout has fought and won two fights since his loss to Florian at The Ultimate Fighter 3 finale and is a very explosive fighter in the standup game. A veteran of the Canadian TKO promotion, Stout will be looking to break back into the UFC with a decisive victory over Fisher. My guess is that the UFC will keep Stout around regardless of the fights outcome, possibly moving him to the WEC if he does lose.

I do think Spencer Fisher will avenge his “short-notice” loss to Stout and restart his climb back up the UFC lightweight division. Spencer is one of my personal favorite fighters and I think in another year or two Fisher has a great possibility of being Lightweight champion. This fight should remain on the feet the whole time as both fighters love to throw heavy hands. This fight should be explosive from start to finish, so sit back and enjoy it. Winner: Spencer Fisher

Roan Carneiro vs Jon Fitch - Jon Fitch is probably that one fighter you don’t know much about that you really should. Don’t worry, pretty soon you’ll be very familiar with Fitch; if he manages to win this fight, you will see Jon thrown right into the UFC Welterweight title mix. Fitch is on a 12 fight win streak and hasn’t lost since 2002. That win streak is really the only thing that worries me about the outcome of this fight as 2007 seems to be the year when long winning streaks come to an end.

Roan Carneiro is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission specialist and will look to take Fitch down early and often and keep him there. I don’t really see Roan having much success on the feet or the mat against Fight, and I expect Fitch to end this fight by KO. Winner: Jon Fitch

Jordan Radev vs Drew McFedries - Jordan Radev makes his UFC debut against the heavy-handed Drew McFedries out of the Miletich camp. McFedries looked impressive in his last fight at Martin Kampmann but unfortunately gassed out a bit and lost by submission at the end of the first round. I’m not that familiar with Radev’s fight game, but I hope he stands and trades shots with McFedries. Winner: Drew McFedries

Jason Black vs Thiago Tavares - Jason Black is another one of those fighters that most UFC fans might not be familiar with, but is well-known to long-time MMA fans. Black will make his long-overdue UFC debut when he fights undefeated Thiago Tavares. Black is a very experienced veteran of Pride’s Bushido and the Extreme Challange promotion. Black only has lost twice himself, once to Shonie Carter because of injury and once to Shinya Aoki by triangle choke last August. I’m glad that Jason Black is finally in the UFC, and his addition only adds to the already stacked UFC welterweight division. Winner: Jason Black

Undercard

Forrest Petz (169.5) vs Luigi Fioravanti (170.5) - Winner: Luigi Fioravanti
Tamdan McCrory (169.5) vs Pete Spratt (170.5) - Winner: Pete Spratt
Jeff Cox (155) vs Gleison Tibau (155.5) - Winner: Gleison Tibau
Anthony Johnson (170) vs Chad Reiner (171) - Winner: Chad Reiner
Luke Caudillo (156) vs Nate Mohr (155.5) - Winner: Nate Mohr

Great fights, I think this fight night may surpass Saturdays PPV. Every fight was entertaining and all put on a good show. Fitch looked like he was being controlled for the first round but he came out in the second and showed why he is considered a top contender. Dam Sam Stout has a rock chin man. Spencer was throwing bombs and he sat there and took them like a champ. That was a great battle and it was a great show of heart by both fighters.

Was this another perfect example of some guys just having another guy’s number? even though Sammy boy didn’t win, 95% of the other lightweights in the UFC would have dropped from a variety of Spencer’s punches. I’ve never been a big Miletich fan, but the King has always been a favorite of mine…the guy is all heart and last night was the most technical striking exhibition I can ever recall in the UFC. It’s scary to imagine how talented this kid is if he continues to improve. Bravo Spencer, bravo.

yea fisher did a great job, his problem is that he lacks KO power. I mean, if stout had connected even one of those haymaker overhand rights that fisher was landing all night, his power would have knocked out spencer.. for sure!

great job br drew also, he trains so hard, about time hes rewarded with a great win like that!
