What an excellent, exciting night of MMA fights. The main event was action packed and exciting to watch from start to finish, and every other fight shown on the SpikeTV show was exciting to watch as well.
- Spencer Fisher vs Sam Stout - This fight definitely lived up to, and probably exceeded most people’s expectations. Fisher looked as accurate and confident as I have ever seen him, even after taking quite a few solid shots from Sam Stout. While I think a third fight between Stout and Fisher would end the same way this past fight did, I would still love to see these two guys go 3 more rounds again. Spencer is back on his way to a lightweight title shot (or as Mike Goldberg called it, a “titer shot”).
- Jon Fitch vs Roan Carneiro - Fitch surprised me early on in the way he seemed to not pay much attention to the guillotine choke Carneiro was laying on him. Fitch didn’t seem to concerned with controller Roan’s wrists and for a few seconds there I thought Fitch was going to lose by submission. But Fitch showed why he truly is one of the top 170lb fighters in the UFC and finally got some of the TV recognition he deserves.
- Drew McFedries vs Jordan Radev - McFedries looked very much like the animal he has shown himself to be in all three of his appearances in the UFC. Radev was out of that fight from the first punch and lucky he didn’t suffer any permanent damage due to the late stoppage from the Jorge Riveira (or as Mike Goldberg called him, “Horgee”).
- Jason Black vs Thiago Tavares - Jason Black dissappointed me a little with his performance, but I really can’t get down on him because Thiago Tavares looked like a machine. Tavares looks like he could be one of the top 155lber’s in the UFC in another year or two. His BJJ is just so strong and physical that he will give many of the current lightweights fits. I hope Black can either manage to find a good spot cutting to 155 or move back up to 170, although the competition isn’t any easier at welterweight.
- Congrats to Tamdan McCory for his debut win over Pete Spratt.
Once again, I thought this was an excellent night of free fights and the UFC better hope that this Saturday’s UFC 72 can come close to this level of action.
