UFC President Dana White appeared on ESPN’s “The Hot List” this afternnon and announced that BJ Penn would be fighting the winner of the Sean Sherk vs Hermes Franca fight which will take place July 7 at UFC 73.
Seems kind of surprising to me considering that BJ seemed like he wanted to return to the welterweight division and fight Matt Hughes again after his loss at UFC 63. But then again, BJ has stated before that he would like to make a run at collecting as many UFC title belts as he can, so why not start with the Lightweight division and work his way up.
Personally, I don’t like the fact that BJ Penn gets all these title shots instantly in each weight division. Granted, I do agree that BJ is probably at the top of the UFC lightweight and welterweight divisions, but I don’t think he should get granted that title shot just because he returned to the division and beat Jens Pulver. If you remember, I was pretty upset that BJ Penn was the replacement to fight Matt Hughes at UFC 63 after Georges St. Pierre had to pull out with an injury. If BJ had won at UFC 63, he would have been the welterweight title holder after losing his previous fight at welterweight to GSP. Now he drops down to 155 for what he said was just one fight against Jens, and he is going to fight for the title.
What happens if BJ wins the belt from Sherk or Franca. BJ has already said he doesn’t think he wants to stay at lightweight so is he just going to vacate the belt and the UFC will have to crown an interim champ when BJ moves up to 170?
After saying all that, I still would love to see a Penn vs Sherk matchup.

the ufc wants penn to win cuz penn is marketable than sherk in my opionion
@DrJ
I see your point.. however BJ is soooo much more exciting than Sherk, and you know WHEN he wins it, (not if) he will be dominate, and he will add a VERY marketable and FAMOUS face to the LWD. Right now as it stands NOBODY give a crap to pay for PPV just to see the main event of Sherk vs Franca… but PENN vs ANYBODY and BOOM! Instant PPV seller! I think this makes perfect business sense as long as they can keep BJ on a leash, this will be great. Again he doesn’t like leashes, he likes to do what he wants, but me thinks he is getting a lucrative contract deal for this..
if this fight happens with sherk i think sherk has the perfect offenseve brut strength i mean the guys fu*cken pure muscle and i think bj will have his hands full with this fight
AGREED RICHARD….. SHERK IS A TANK ID GO WITH SHERK
Does anyone think BJ is past his prime? Pulver did not look very good the other night, he got beet by JSP and Hughes, he has not won a fight agianst a top fighter in a long time. Sure seems like it is all based off of his popularity. I agree it is a good business move, is it a good MMA/UFC move? Credibility comes into play. I think he can win in the LWD, but can he win when he goes up? I like BJ, just think he needs to prove himself as a welterweight before they give him a title shoot again.
@DOC OR ANYONE….
I HEAR NICK DIAZ IS CALLING OUT FRANK SHAMROCK… HOW THE HELL WOULD THAT WORK CUZ THEY ARE SO DIFFERENT IN WEIGHT
it said frank was at 177 on fight night nick fights at 170
richard I THOUGH FRANK IS A MIDDLEWEIGHT AT 185 ISNT THAT WHAT HE HAS TO WEIGH IN AT
@PATRICK,
Middleweight is anywhere from 171-186 so weighing in at 177 is within those limits
BJ can not beat Sherk, plain & simple.
Amir are you nuts?? I definately think BJ could beat Sherk.. Look what he did to hughes, whos a basically a bigger and better version of Sherk WITH BJJ knowledge. Though i agree with Richard, BJ will definately have his hands full. I would consider BJ the favorite in that fight, if he trains hard like he OBVIOUSLY did ofr the Pulver fight, BJ is a force to be reckoned with. I think his title shot was definately too fast, considering all the talent at that division! What ever happened to Joe Daddy?? Personally i think that guy could take Sherk..
Like i said before, BJ is gonna stay at lightweight.. if you ask me, thats where he belongs. Not to say he CANT beat guys at 170, but why all this talk about challenging yourself?? its stupid if you ask me.. look at Jens, he made the right move dropping down to 145. Fight at the lowest division you can get into.. Look at Riggs..
Well if youv’e watched the type of training regimen that Sherk goes through, you will easily see that BJ Penn is the last person on earth that will out-cardio Sherk. I don’t care how much BJ thinks he is training, his problem has always been his ego in thinking that he will eventually find a way to catch people. Even though there is no denying that BJ’s level of BJJ is far more skilled than Sherk, having Sherk bulldoze through BJ and taking him down will wear on him.
Or maybe…I’m just nuts.
SHERK IS AN EFFEN TANK WHO WILL TEAR INTO FRANCA EASY
ya amir, i know about Sherk, but you shouldnt count out BJ like that, you cant count him out at welterweight let alone lightweight. Styles make fights, BJ is designed to beat guys like Sherk. If you noticed Sherk focuses on conditioning, other than that he has a strong wrestling game and some boxing. He doesnt train BJJ, thats a mistake in my opinion, you gotta know BJJ atleast for defense. Hughes implemented BJJ into his game and it took him to a new level with his wrestling style.
To say BJ has no chance vs Sherk IS nuts man.. If BJ is serious about coming back and being the champ, nobody at lightweight can stop him. Welter is another story hehe…
Sherk doesn’t train BJJ? and you think I’m nuts? just because they did not show specific video footage of him concentrating on BJJ, that doesn’t mean he isn’t practicing it. Sherk is no idiot and he knows he needs to be well rounded at anything and everything to do whatever it takes to stay champion. Are you that naive to think he doesn’t train BJJ? of course, he will never acquire the mastery of the discipline as Penn has done in his lifetime, but I’m sure he is at a string enough level to ward off submission and grappling attempts. Is Kenny Florian not a master JuiJitsu specialist? Sherk is all muscle and on that day, I believe his superior athleticism will be too much for BJ’s ego to handle.
well, i cant say hes never trained ANY BJJ at all hehe.. but you know what i mean, he doestn concentrate on it enough. Hughes does alot more BJJ than sherk and you can see it in their fight styles. Hughes is more of a wrestling BJJ hybrid, i think Sherk should try and model Hughes a little more as a fighter.
But i see what your saying Amir, im not saying by any means that it would be an easy fight for either of them. Its just when you say BJ has no chance, i had to disagree. Ivs always been a Sherk fan, when all these guys were talking about Kenny beating Sherk. I must admit Kenny surprised me at how well he did, but i was the first one behind Sherk in that match. I could hunt down the post if you really want.
The reason why i like BJ in this fight is because from what hes been saying and the way hes been performing, it looks like hes taking fighting more seriously now. I just watch Hughes-Penn 2, BJ won the first 2 rounds very decisively! then in round 3 he came out like a zombie, he couldnt move, it took him like 2 seconds to throw a jab. He was dead!
Its all about conditioning for BJ, theres no way he will be in shape like SHerk is, but once he has enough to execute his gameplan he can win.. i would probably pick BJ to win that fight..
I don’t understand how you can say that you even watched the fight right after you said:
” The reason why i like BJ in this fight is because from what hes been saying and the way hes been performing, it looks like hes taking fighting more seriously now”.
The way he’s been performing? excuse me but he did exactly what he always does, talked a big game. For you to say that BJ has been performing…what are you basing that on exactly? it better not be the Pulver fight or even the Hughes fight. Your talking as if he’s already fought 3 or 4 wins in a few months, don’t jump ahead of yourself.
i was talking about the hughes fight showing how he didnt have conditioning. I was talking about the Pulver fight where he DID have the conditioning, he didnt get tired in that fight.
lol bro, its obvious you dont think much of BJ, but ill tell you what, ill bet a MMAHQ shirt against you on that fight. What you say Amir? lets just see what happens..
i just watched the BJ pulver fight again, BJ won the standup game against Jens. Thats saying something man, Jens is a great striker, and Sherk has no hands lol. Then look at BJs unique takedown defense, thers only 1 BJ penn man, Sherk is a carbon copy of 100 other wrestlers. Hes a great fighter and a tough guy, but he doesnt have the tools to beat BJ.
On top of all that, BJ is going for the TITLE man! you realize how hungry he is right now? Like rampage, hes looking for that chedda!!
haha yo! you better reckognize BJ like hes familiar…
I bet you Amir! I BETCHU! lol
But just a little over a month ago we got into the same discussion about Rampage (who I was saying would win) and Liddell (who you were saying would win)…now your acting as if you were rooting for Rampage all along?
I also don’t want to confuse you about my views of BJ Penn, it has nothing to with my liking or disliking him. I know enough to realize how good he is and has always been, the question is will he ever be as great as everyone hyped him up to be. No one wanted him to beat up on Hughes more than me. I typically can’t stand boring wrestlers, a breed of which Sherk is definitely a part of…however, I do think that he will be too much for BJ to handle at that weight class.
i hate to stick my nose in on this ,bvrasp u know the best defense for bjj is its strength being able to physically pull out of stuff sorry but sherk is freakishly strong and his wrestling is freakin awesome i cant see bj keepin sherk down or getting a submission on i just dont sorry now iv picked franca to win but i just cant see it happening sherk is an animal but something is telling me that franca is going to win for some reason.one more thing bvrasp bj looked awesome in the pulver fight cuz pulver aint the figther he used to be
@Amir
Once again you got the facts wrong.. i was going for Rampage in that fight, though i said he would win with a slam then GnP.
What we were arguing in that post was who was the better striker, i thought chuck had the better hands, and you said it was Rampage. Rampage connected and i guess you were right in that fight, but that doesnt mean i was going for Chuck LOL. Now your saying im Acting like i was with ramapage?? why would i do that when the evidence is right here? think man.. dam
“ok, so thats me, kansas and ofcourse richard who lookin for Rampage to take the title. The worst that could happen is if its a boring fight that goes to the scorecards. Like if rampage gets the takedown then gasses from the slams and just lays on top of chuck..
HOPEFULLY! its gonna be an action packed fight man! cuz im getting really hyped up for this matchup.”

@Rich
I know about Sherk man.. trust me.. Thats why i picked him over Kenny Florian way back.. i can dig up that post too if you think im lying like Amir alluded to.. Sherk can power through Kenny, hes not escaping BJ. The kind of flexibility and dexterity that BJ has is ulike Sherk has ever seen man. Like i said.. theres only 1 BJ Penn.
What happens if Sherk cant get the takedown?? have you guys ever considered that? BJ is one of the hardest guys in mma to takedown. Hes got GREAT boxing ability! plus hes got a nice reach advantage on Sherk.
I dont care what anyone says.. im with BJ on this one.. Like io said with Rampage, if he trains hard and comes into the fight in good condition, he will win.
hehe by the way Rich feel free to jump in whenever i like your input, you never say stuff like.. this guy sucks etc..
So Amir, are we on or what??? one mmahq t-shirt
i like betting these non existing shirts LOL
for the record so no one calls ma a liar later i think Franca will catch Shirk in a rear naked late in the second or early third and be your next light weight champ i dont know why i’m calling this just the way i think it will go.
well so far theres only been your shirt rich, and dennis disappeared since then.. if i lost i would cough up a shirt man.. even tho they dont exist.. they probably will if enough people owe shirts hehe
Im sure Dr.J would hook that up
bvrasp
honestly why u think hillbilly left us ?
i have no idea.. im guessing the shirt? or maybe cuz of what happened to chuck? i dunno.. what do you think?
well on one of the forums he asked doc to let him know when the shirts are done so he can send me one ,so i dont think that was it but what happened to liddel might be it maybe he was talking alot but he was going like 30 or more a day and to go from that to almost known in a couple months is weird maybe he died?
lol dont say that man.. maybe he just been busy.. have you checked out his site? like when you click on his name..
lol i tryed to click on Dennis’s name and i got Chuck Liddell’s home page lol why did i not see that comming lol
@Richard, R.J.
I think Dennis is either
1. consumed with finding solid employment, because he lost his job.
or
2. The Iceman got whipped just like everyone said, and he is taking it pretty hard because his gravitar and his forum link was all Chuck so yeah, that sucks.
My problem with theory 2 is that I didn’t do that when Wand got knocked out, so suck it up Dennis and start posting… if that is NOT the case, sorry, oh and I think he is monitoring the web site and just reading right now.. he will be back soon, probably with a revised pick and he will go on and on about Shogun and the next fight with Liddell…
Sorry B.V.. didn’t include you on that last post, that was also addressing you too .. I know you could care less, but it was rude of me..
kansas
i thought we almost lost u to man where uv been
thanks kansas hehe, maybe it wasnt the chuck thing either.. he lost his job? hopefully not because of posting on here instead of working. That would suck man, getting booked by your boss goofing off or something.. When was his last post? like 2 weeks ago?
i hate to butt in on this subject but i just want to ask you if you remember matt hughes getting chocked out by bj penn, or how about st. pierre getting his face mangled by bj penn after penn took the fight couple weeks before the event or how about bj penn kicking matt hughes *** in the first 2 round before seperating his ribs. now how can you say sherk would be too much for bj to handle when sherk couldnt even handle matt hughes or peirre. bj kicked both of there asses and he wasnt even 100 percent conditioned. now put his bjj skills which is unmatched, remember he is the only non brazilian to with the bjj world championships which he accomplished with only 3 years of training, his determination, and being a 100 percent conditioned. I think the question is could sherk handle bj??? I think not!!!! remember its not how strong you are but how skilled you are….. even the heavywight champ randy couture said he had a hard time with bj penn’s ground skills and impossible to take down………………..
@Hawaiian
just a couple things about BJ Penn and the reason i myself some times over look him:
#1 BJ Penn is a lazy fighter he hates to train. he knows he is gifted and because of that most of the time he doesnt work hard enough. his last fight was the first one in a long time i seen him in that good of shape. i dont know if BJ has it in him to out work Sherk in the gym
#2 everyone keeps talking about this rib thing but the way i see it is fights are stopped all the time because of injures. if it was a cut or a broken arm the ref would have stopped it and Penn would have no excuse but because he tryed to hide his injury and keep fighting he ended up in a bad position and got finished. he lost and it doesnt matter how or why he could not defend him self and the ref stopped the fight.
#3 i think the mma world has proved enough times that just because Penn beat Hughes and Hughes beat Sherk then Penn could bead Sherk is not really the way things work.
is bj penn going to be stronger than sherk fu*ck no no way and bj can get taken down cuz sherk is going to shoot right threw him like he says and get the take down thats for sure no one in that weight class can handle sherks strength no one but i dont think sherk can finish bj
Its nice to see that someone is with me on BJs side. Though Hawaiian doesnt make the best points..
See my previous posts if you wanna see the points I made about BJ, for now ill just say this.
BJ will submit Sean “man love” Sherk by rear naked choke.
yea bj is going to wrap that leg around that arm and choke him out
From what i saw, Sherk bullrushed into a guillotine to get the takedown. Then he bullrushed into 3-4 knees to get the takedown. Then on the ground he tried to impregnate Franca, though im not sure if Franca IS actually pregnant, but im sure Dr. J will post the results of the test soon hehe.
There were more than a few opportunities for Franca to win that fight, i dont think Franca is at BJs caliber as a fighter.
BJ Penn at 155?? Fighting for the title?? Training hard and determined to win??
NOBODY at 155 can stop him.. like i said after he lost to Hughes, he belongs at 155.
holla
sherk did make some sweet love on saturday
haha, man, Sherk could be SO much better of a fighter if he got together with a good team. Like miletich, or even Punishment.. atleast Tito knows how to throw elbows.
i talked to a few other guys who said sherk could of finished if he wanted to i dont think he could he didnt hurt franca physically he hurt him mentally
ya ill agree with that, he did finish Franca mentally, he just got so tired, he felt he couldnt mount any kind of attack. If you are too tired to attack, you have no chance to win, except DQ i guess..
but franca shouldnt take time off like ive been hearing he is his stand up is awesome he fu*cken caught sherk like 3or 4 good times with a knee so i hope he doesnt “take a break”
ya i agree rich, Hes a good fighter, but i guess hes thinking, he had his shot, he lost, so it will be a long time (if ever) before he gets another title shot in the UFC.
Id like to see Yves Edwards come back, hes a good fighter, hes my buddys fav fighter. Hes already got 2 wins over franca, but after he almost bled to death against Joe daddy, the UFC released him.
ive actually seen yves fighting in bodog i dont think hes doing so good but joe daddy vs sherk im looking forward to
Oh HELL ya! Joe Daddy vs Sherk man! Thats prob the best matchup at 155. Id probably give the edge to Sherk in strength and conditioning, Joes biggest test by far. If its a 5 rounder, Joe needs to put the Hurt on Sherk fast! i dont think he would have the endurance to wrestle Sherk for 25 min. Sherk would be the favorite, but id LOVE to see Joe Daddy get on top of Sherk and pound him out!
joe has had two very very short fights since he dropped to 155 hes fighting real soon cant wait to see him
You guys got this all wrong. Penn’s only losses are with fighters in welterweight division. St Pierre and Hughes with the exception of Jens who he recently beat the crap out of, his losses was from former champions. Remember everyone said that the St Pierre decision lost should have gone BJ’s way. Just watch the fight St Pierre got his *** beat and his face showed it. Matt Hughes was lucky to survive the second fight with BJ’s injury. The bottom-line is if BJ continues to fight in the lightweight division he will dominate because he fights much bigger for that weight class, he has heavier hands and he can also easily submit you. So does he deserve the title shot of course look at the people he lost too…only former world champions.
what about ryoto machida bj penn lost that one to
the one thing i really dont like about Penn is that he is just lazy he has the tools to be the best but he lets his training stop him. i really hope he fights Sherk and comes in the best shape he can because i dont wanna see “man love” Sherk dry hump BJ for five rounds. Sherk is a great fighter and showed in his last fight that deserves to wear that belt, i just dont like his style the way i see it is he never really “beat” Franca he won the fight but he never “beat” him. imo a champ should be able to “beat” his opponent instead of hold on for the win (Tim Sylvia) most of the time title holders are main event fighters and i dont really wanna see a main event full of man love or jabs from 20 feet away. the point is these fighters need to finish the fight you are there to “beat” your foe so “beat” him, dont hold him down so he cant “beat” you. it just doesnt seem like laying on top of a man for 25min. is not the best way to win a fight.
rj
i cant agree with u more but i just cant see sherk losing hes to strong and trains to much
