Well, less than 24 hours after Sherdog.com “anonymously” reported that both BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez had agreed to fight each other at UFC 74 in Auguest they are retracting their story. Today, Josh Gross at Sherdog.com is reporting that BJ Penn’s camp denies that he will be fighting Sanchez in August and even goes so far as saying the fight has not been offered to them by the UFC.
To be honest, I’m starting to become quite leary of Sherdog.com and their news stories that are posted with not “official” author. This is not the first time that a story that they have posted a story they insisted had been “confirmed by trusted sources” only to later be flatly denied by the fighters involved. It seems like Sherdog is trying to hedge their bets and put news out there without taking any responsiblity. Josh Gross, why not put the author’s name on the original article? If the story isn’t trusted enough to attach someone’s name to it, why post the news at all?
B.J. Penn’s camp informed Sherdog.com that the 28-year-old Hawaiian would not face Diego Sanchez in August, though the possibility wasn’t ruled out for a later date.
On Tuesday, Sherdog.com cited a source close to Penn and Sanchez who said a fight had been agreed upon for Aug. 25 in Las Vegas and would be featured on the undercard of the UFC heavyweight title fight between Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Penn’s camp said the fight with Sanchez had not been offered by the UFC for August, and indicated many options are being discussed as far the fighter’s future inside the octagon, which includes the possibility of him remaining at lightweight.
Penn (11-4-1) expects to release news of his future via his Web site, BJPenn.com, though no date was given as to when he would make a statement.

sherdog is a world all its own. there is lots of very smart people around there.
I’ve said it for years, Sherdog is the absolute worst source for MMA news. Remember, I was shocked when they partnered with ESPN because I can think of MANY better news sources than Sherdog.
To bad this is not true. I think this would be a great fight.
Now I’m really pissed this is not true. My wife bought me tickets for UFC74 for our anniversary. Hope they add some good fights to the card. Can’t wait to see GSP hammer lay and pray KOS.
