Mirko Cro Cop Interview

September 10th, 2007 | by Dr J

Mirko Filipovic

If you can understand Croatian, here is the video interview.

What can I say, I’m very disappointed. I broke a rib already in the first round, so I was breathing heavily, I also got two knees in the groin, which hurt my stamina. I feel bad, I fought bad, maybe I’m getting older,” he tried to make a joke. “My rib hurts, don’t be mad, we’re gonna continue. I just want to go home right now and take a rest. We’ll see. Thanks to everyone who came to London to support me, thanks!

well i dont know what to say about this. i want to make excuses for Cro Cop because im a big fan, but it drove me nuts when BJ Penn lost to Hughes and his fans kept talking about his ribs and such. the way i see it is a loss is a loss is a loss, broken rib, broken nose, or broken heart. you come to fight, and you fight. if you get injured and lose you still lose and if your injured and you win you still win. i hope the UFC takes this into consideration and give him more opportunity’s to show us why hes one of the top heavy weights fighting today.

I don’t think he was making excuses, more like an explanation of what went wrong. We all could tell by the fight he wasn’t performing up to his past standards. I made a comment during the second round that he looks like he may have broken a rib. The fact he went 4 rounds with a broken rib is unreal, especially with a guy the size and clinch ability of Kongo. I don’t see these kinds of explanations as excuses, and get confused when others disparage fighters when their answers to questions about their performance is anything related to injuries or mental focus. Like it or not BJ seperating a rib had a lot to do with how he performed the rest of the fight. Telling someone you had a broken rib and were kneed twice in the groin when answering the question about what went wrong int he fight is a valid answer. There are times when not to mention injuries, in the ring righ tafter the fight is one of them. That moment is for the victor. Tim mentioning his back problems in the in-ring interview was in poor taste. Am I making any sense..lol?

i’ll second that and next time im tying to make a point im going to get MAXX to say it clearly for me. i think we need to stop asking fighters why they think they lost and just leave it at they lost and if there good they’ll be back.

Thanks for backing up my point, I was trying to sound logical rather than an apologist. Bottom line is right after the fight injuries shouldn’t be really discussed at all. During the press hoopla later on if a fighter gets asked what went wrong, it’s perfectly fine to give reasons why the fighter felt it went the way it did, so long as it’s not insulting to the opponent (like what Tito does after every single loss…or win for that matter). I’ve watched many fights where a fighter looked terrible, or there was a sudden change in momentum then you usually find out later something went physically wrong before or during the fight. That’s just part of the fight game though, and it shouldn’t be seen as a slight against the opponent.

in a way a broken bone can cause you to lose a fight just like a cut accept its much easier to hide a broken hand or rib. after a fight ends due to a cut you never ask “why do you think you lost” because its obvious. so i say they should stop asking why because it doesnt really matter. why did that fighter lose….. “because the other guy f*ckin beat me, duh!” i guess im just ranting because another one of my favorite fighters got upset again.

It’s a tough time to have any favorites in MMA.
