Liddell vs Wanderlei at UFC 79 - CONFIRMED

October 18th, 2007 | by Dr J

UFC 79

FINALLY! After way too long, the fight between Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva is going to happen at UFC 79 in December as originally planned.

Word surfaced today that Wanderlei Silva’s first opponent would be revealed at this Saturday nights UFC 77 event in Ohio. Well, DirectTV went ahead and spoiled the surprise today buy “announcing it in their own special way.

We can all finally give a sigh of relief and be contented in knowing that this “dream matchup” is finally going to happen in our lifetime.

UFC 79: Nemesis is shaping up to be a decent card with the Silva vs Liddell fight added to a fight card that already included Matt Serra vs Matt Hughes for the welterweight title and BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson/Sean Sherk for the lightweight title.

I guess many of you can now die in peace…or at least have reasons to live until Jan., to tell you the truth I don’t really care that much about this fight anymore. I never really understood why it was such a “dream match” to begin with, okay maybe when they were both dominating but that’s obviously over with and that window of opportunity has shut. I think Chuck needs to prove himself before he fights Wandi, there are much better match-ups out there that should be taking place. Just the fact that he wouldn’t even look Jardine in the eye during the staredown proves that he is ready to call it quits and doesn’t have the fire or drive to keep fighting. At this stage I really don’t see what Chuck has to lose. It seems like he’s just begging to get punched right into retirement.

I’m still interested in seeing this fight. It would have been a lot more interesting if they were still reining champions and were looking to unify the belts like it was supposed to be but oh well this fight needs to happen anyway. At least all the debate will be over that has gone on for years now. I’m glad they went ahead and put this fight togrther for the year end show. There’s no reason at this point it should not happen. Both are coming off consecutive losses for the first time in their carees so it’s still even in my opinion. I’m glad they didn’t just throw this one out the window because the way things have been going Chuck may not be around much longer.

I am just amazed by the WHOLE CARD… wow… BJ Penn vs Joe Daddy…. that alone is a headliner… plus Wand and Chuck… omg.. then you have Hughes and Serra… yet another one shot headliner…. its the best card in recent years for the UFC…. over all, you would have to be an idiot to miss it.

Comment by Amir about 1 year, 1 month ago

I feel the same way, I’m glad it’s happening but I wish it wasn’t under these circumstances. It’s so hard to even make a legible argument for any fighter in that division anymore since everything has been completely turned upside down (Jardine, Alexander, etc.) However, I strongly believe that “dream match-ups” should be made between fighters who are on top NOW. I just think Liddell is clearly finished with the mental aspect of fighting.

@Amir
I agree about chuck, but this fight might be the one thing he needs to prove, Wand too…. it could be the catalyst for them both to get their heads back in the game of MMA… regain passion for just proving whose the best and the PRIDE of being the biggest bad arse in the stable… which both look to have waned in lately… I see vigor in Wand on this… a rejuvenation and rebirth… perhaps the same will happen in heart and soul of Chuck…

@Doc

I wouldn’t be so quick to say this is “confirmed” just because of a DirectTV ad. The link that you’ve posted no longer shows Chuck and Wandi. I have a feeling DirecTV jumped the gun here and Zuffa has already made them change the ad.

@FATHOG..
Of course he can re-publish what other MMA sites are publishing and basically headline it as so… if it is retracted then so bit, doesn’t take Docs credibility at all, would be a UFC sponsor/partners fault it got out or was misinformation…

The media didn’t make the WMD mistake, it was the war/state department of Homeland security that did it.. that’s why you don’t hear people complaining and blaming cnn an fox news for reporting it … they blame the pres. and the admin. that professed a “slam dunk” prematurely … complain to Direct TV if it’s not true…

lol. what does WMD have to do w/ anything? All I’m saying is I wouldn’t use DirecTV as “confirmation.” They appear to have already modified the ad. “Confirmed” should imply something from the UFC brass in my opinion.

@all,

Yeah DirectTV changed the ad, and I’m sure they only did that because the UFC saw that they had posted it early and came down hard on them and made them change it.

I’m confident in calling this fight confirmed. Hackleman already said they were planning on still fighting Wandi in December, we know Wandi’s fight will be announced on Saturday, and now with the DirectTV thing… I’m leaving it up.

Again another one of your educated opinions with profound and exhaustive insight… with really big words that mean a lot such as “sucked”. I am surprised you knew that the “ed” went on the end of that word since you do so much sucking…

@doc, can you post the last staredown between them two(chuck/wandy) when dana lied and said they were fighting along time ago. Just so we can get a taste of what is SOON to come!!

I’ve just received confirmation from a UFC insider I know:

Wanderlei Silva’s next opponent will be…

the winner of Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping…

@AMIR

I hope your source is WRONG… Doc any insight or depth to this comment or at this stage just another rumor? I want Chuck Wandy and this makes good for Chuck because this fight would probably retire him (old and 3 losses vs Wand younger and 3 losses) but it would suck for fans…

Comment by Dr J about 1 year, 1 month ago

I can pretty much say I don’t think what Amir stated is true.

Dana White said himself yesterday in the UFC 77 press conference that the winner of Evans vs Bisping would be the next in line for a title shot at Quinton Jackson. So, with that in mind I find it hard to believe that Wandi is going to fight the winner.

Also, we just found out that the BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson fight has been moved from UFC 79 in December to the February super bowl weekend show. This is most likely because Randy is out and they need a marque fight for the pre-super bowl show combined with the fact that they already have Serra-Hughes and now Wandi-Chuck on the UFC 79 card.

Lol….wow I didn’t think you guys would take me so seriously. I was being sarcastic in stating that Wandi will face the winner of Evans/Bisping. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was kidding of course. But, then again, I’m sure it wouldn’t be the crappiest fight Joe Silva and cronies insist on selling us.

Allaz !! Finally Chuck will get his *** whooped into retirement. They didn’t give my man Rampage enough credit / respect when he kicked Chuck’s ***. I had predicted that all his fans were going to make excuses for him when he lost (and that’s what happened). MMA fans wannabes will finally see that their hero CHUCK SUCKS!! - Wandi said it a video a few years ago “I wanna f^ck Chuck” haha” (I’m serious) - - - Anyway, outside from this topic there’s no way in this world that Rampage would loose another fight to Wanderlei - Hell No!! So he might as well kill him self along with Chuck on UFC 79 b/c either of them will ever touch that championship belt :)

do you really think Chuck is his confident self lately? did you see the Jardine fight? you almost sound like Joe Rogen. next you’ll be telling us about his wiiiilllllddd looooppping punches from weeeiiirrrdd angles, you need a little more then just confidence to win a fight. please watch the next pay per view with the sound off so you can make up your own opinion. like i said before Chuck is going to have a problem with Wandi because he is too aggressive and can take a good punch, as long as he closes the distance and stays in Chucks face i think hes got this fight.

i was talking about rampage being more confident against wandy if they should meet for the third time,and if chuck were to beat wandy i think that would give rampage a bigger boost of confidence.But chucks a counter fighter and to me wandys aggresiveness might leave him open for a counter from liddel

ah i see what your saying now. yet again though i will say confidence doesnt get the win, a lot like the confidence Chuck showed in his rematch with Rampage. at the time of Liddell vs. Jackson 2 Chuck looked to be at his peek and had the confidence to k.o. just about anyone. we all know how that one ended, some fights are just a bad match for you and Chuck vs. Rampage/Rampage vs. Wanderlei are one in the same.

That belt and ANOTHER win over Liddell doesn’t make him different, as far as I can see he is indeed the same and will be put to rest after Wand chokes him with his chain…

Two fights haven’t shown ANY change at all … he won against Liddell like before and he won a decision on Hendo… so what… whoopie. Hendo was a challenge but we all new how the fight would play out, whoever vied and got the best position in the clinch and on the ground would win and we all new it the Liddell fight would be a repeat…

Uhhh Wandi knocked out Rampage twice … so what about hendo.. wand is 1-1 on him,, he has a win on that one too don’t forget

Other thing, unless Jackson can bring that belt into the octagon and HIT wandi with it, it wont do anything except add PRESSURE to him which could play against him… lol WWE hitting people with belts lol
