EliteXC: Renegade Recap

November 11th, 2007 | by Dr J

EliteXC: Renegade Recap

EliteXC: Renegade was a pretty solid, exciting fight card and ProElite is doing a good job improving their show with each event. There still are plenty of quirks that could easily be fixed (i.e. not having Bill Goldberg on the announcing team, and not letting Jared Shaw hang off the fighters like some kind of blood-sucking leach) but the show looks professionally produced and keeps the attention well. Now, onto the fights.

  • Nick Diaz vs KJ Noons was an exciting fight if you are a fight fan. If you are a Nick Diaz fan, it wasn’t exciting at all. Diaz looked awful and KJ Noons looked on point. Noons utilized brutal body shots early and often in the first round and they appeared to take a toll on Diaz. Diaz lazily took shots from far outside that Noons easily stuffed and landed a few solid knees off of.

While its never good to see a fight stopped early by doctor’s decision, the stoppage was well warranted and Noons deserved the belt. Diaz, of course, didn’t agree and walked around the cage and back to his locker room in disgust, brandishing the Stockton Salute the whole time. Diaz has nothing to complain about in this fight except for himself. He fought awful, looked awful, and needs to get back to his roots. In my preview I said that if Diaz tried to box with Noons, who is a professional boxer, that he would lose. He did, and he lost.

I’m sure this will setup an immediate rematch for Diaz due to the earlier stoppage and lack of another good contender to challenge Noons. If Diaz doesn’t work on some better takedowns, I think we will see the same result.

  • Kimbo Slice vs Bo Cantrell was all build-up and no release. Kimbo scored a flash KO of Cantrell that almost looked like a setup job to me. Cantrell came out with a nice spinning backfist that nearly surprised Kimbo. Kimbo was patient and stalked Cantrell until he was able to land a nice uppercut and elbow behind the ear that dropped Cantrell to the mat. Cantrell immediately tapped out vigorously before Slice was able to land any more strikes, which struck me as very odd. Kimbo really didn’t get a chance to show anyone anything in this fight and scored his first pro MMA victory in 19 seconds.
  • Jake Shields vs Mike Pyle was a good tactical battle with Shields securing a nice rear naked choke after a strong series of grappling. Shields deserves the EliteXC welterweight belt and it’s too bad that Pyle declined having this fight be a title fight. Belt or no belt, Shields proved he is the welterweight champion and that he definitely deserves his top ten ranking. Pyle continues his recent slide and it is unsure where he will end up next.
  • Seth Kleinbeck vs Kyle Noke was the fight of the night in my opinion. Both fighters were active from the start, Kleinbeck winning the standup battle with Noke controlling the ground game with multiple submission attempts. I would love to see these two guys rematch again, as the fight was stopped early in the second round due to a serious cut that opened up over Kleinbeck’s left eye.
  • Antonio Silva could easily be a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division. Silva weighed in at 265 which means he could make the heavyweight limit and not have to fight at super heavyweight. If Silva were to fight at heavyweight, he would pose all sorts of matchup problems with other heavyweights.

awww man!!! well Diaz got stopped that sucks bad. did the doctor stop the fight too early? yeah! but thats only because im a big Nick Diaz fan and i really didnt want to see him lose this fight. truth is Diaz got whooped and like Doc said it was a great showing for Noons and a horrible one for Diaz. im wondering if this will set up Noons vs. Bennett 2? Kimbo looked good for the few seconds he was in there. the end did look a bit phony but i think what happen was Bo Cantrell knew full well he was just there to get knocked out and when he took that heavy elbow the b*tch in him came out and tapped to save himself from the K.O. (and maybe a coma) hopefully we get to see Kimbo fight someone who will fight back next time. aside from that Shields looked good (no surprise), the cut on Kleinbecks face was nuts, and Bigfoot Silva is a beast i would love to see him fight Gonzaga that would be an awesome super fight.

Richard why are commenting on this if you DIDN’T see the fights? That makes no sense.. what do you mean Silva vs Kimbo would be great, just go to daily motion and watch it then give an educated estimation of what you saw and what you think about the fights… sorry for being “instructional” but you can just watch it then say what you think rather than speculating…

Diaz looked awful, he was dull, his reflexes look that of a drunk or stoned person, he gave about 40% of what he is as a fighter… if I were the elite xc I wouldn’t hedge all my bets on Diaz’ familiarity to fans because he is not the kind of guy that can be the “face of an organization.

I guarantee we will see a positive drug test result for him, if not, then he just got lazy or apathetic like Cro Cop in his 2nd UFC fight …. or like BJ PENN at various times….

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

well put guys, everything i thought after watching the fights was already addressed.

That Kimbo fight definately looked like a setup to me.. reminded me of Pete Mcneely against Mike Tyson. That whole nonsense with the spinning backfist lol, then that early tap.. oh man, it was pathetic. I hope that guy got a pay cut from his “take a dive” money.. maybe take some acting lessons next time..

Diaz looked like he showed no respect for Noonz, just walking straight at him (like he does in all his fights). Diaz wasnt able to get the takedown and he was losing the standup game, i truly think Diaz underestimated Noonz. Yes i think it was an early stoppage, especially when its a guy like Diaz, and its a title fight. They should atleast have let him come out in the 2nd round and see how it goes, especially after what happened in the Gomi fight. Only the cut on his nose appeared to be bleeding badly. The cut on his eyelid was in a bad spot, but blood wasnt pouring out of it or anything..

I was wondering if anyone else thought Bo dived. Me and all my friends thought the same thing after watching that fight. He only got hit a couple of times and dives then taps immediatly. Looked pretty phony. Hope Gary Shaw doesn’t start making MMA like boxing or wrestling with the fake factor. Diaz looked terrible out there. At least he looked like he wanted to take the fight to the ground but his shots were ugly. He cut up pretty easilt again also. His scar tissue must be fragile at this point. Shields looked impressive again, hopefully Elite can get some decent fighters to challenge him. He’s looked dominant in his last couple fights. Antonio Silva is a beast at 265. The guys jaw is huge I don’t know how you could phase that guy with a punch. Kimbo better hope they don’t match them up next because I don’t think he will ***** up like Bo did.

It definitely looks like Bo took a dive.

Like I said in my preview he had just fought and lost to Brad Imes about 2 weeks ago. I think Cantrell just saw this as an easy check to cash since EliteXC needed someone quick after Bourke had to withdraw.

He just wanted to get in, get his paycheck, and get out and he didn’t really care. This is a guy who has had over 20 fights so he’s not one to just tap out after a few silly punches.

If Bo did dive just to collect a check that’s pretty dishonorable. If he would have tried to hang in there and at least made a fight out of it he could have left the cage with a little pride. If I was Gary I would dump him off the roster for that “performance”.

Hughes vs Serra.. oh man.. i think Hughes is really gonna hurt that guy man. The shame of getting pretty much swept in the competition, the amount of sht Serra talks about him, the amount of disrespect he shows Hughes. Now just recently the “Hughes Impression” Serra has been doing (pretty funny though lol)

So heres my thoughts on this, maybe its Serras plan to start up beef with Hughes to create more hype, or to make the TUF season more interesting? Other than that, im pretty sure its also legit feelings of hatred aswell. I think its a bad idea on Serras part man.. you really wanna piss this guy off?

The fight, i predict Serra will be injured in this fight man. Hughes will probably work the GnP to the body to try and bust up Serras ribs, then Serra having tremendous heart wont tap, he will just suffer man.

Dam… its gonna be ugly!

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

Seriously guys.. i give Serra a less than 1% chance of winning that fight.. if he does win, it would have to be due to a cut or DQ or something like that.

anyone agree? disagree?

Patrick, i thought you said you make good comments.. you can do better than that, lets hear your opinion on the Hughes Serra thing..

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year ago

WELL BV THIS IS MY VIEW….

HUGHES’ LAST TWO FIGHT BASICALLY HES BEEN BORING HUGHES IS TURNING INTO A DINOSAUR..;.LAYING ON THE FIGHTERS FOR THE WHOLE MATCH… IF HE ATTEMPTS THAT WITH SERRA… THERES A POSSIBILITY THAT SERRA WILL SUBMIT CUZ OF HIS JJ….AND SERRA HAS BETTER STANDUP IN MY OPINION…. IF SERRA GOES INTO THAT FIGHT THE WAY HE DID LIKE GSP… THEN IM SURE SERRA WILL DEFEND AND THEN LOSE IT TO GSP…

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

WOW.. very interesting.. you care to put a wager on that? lets say a mmahq Tshirt? when ever they come out.

Comment by Dr J about 1 year ago

Hughes via unanimous decision

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

I think Hughes is gonna stop Serra by GnP, because im pretty sure Serra wont tap, because of the gracie influence. Once Hughes gets his favorite underhook from the side mount position, hes gonna start pounding to the body and dropping them bows. I dont think Serra has the BJJ to finish Hughes and if it DOES go the distance, its gonna be Hughes all the way.

Serra is gonna have to hurt Hughes on the feet and cut him or something, thats the only way Serra can win, a cut or a flash KO.

Comment by PATRICK about 1 year ago

ALL U GUYS KNOW WHAT HHAPPENS WHEN U DONT GIVE THE UNDERDOG CREDIT….

Comment by MAD about 1 year ago

I’d give him more than 1% chance that’s for sure. BV I thought you were the one that hated haters and gave fighters respect. Giving Serra 1% chance of winning doesn’t seem like giving respect to me. Everyone probably gave him the same chance of beating GSP and he did it so anythings possible. I like Serra a lot more since the show and Hughes a little less. Matt’s attitude bothers me a bit but that’s a personal thing and has nothing to do with his fighting ability. I have to agree with Dr J and say Hughes lays and prays out a decision.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

Well Patrick, lets see if Serra has another miracle in his pocket.. i gained alot of respect for Serra in TUF 4, but since he became the champ, hes been doing alot of talking man. He came out and said he didnt like Hughes, which is fine, you dont have to like the guy. In TUF 6, hes been INCREDIBLY disrespectful to Hughes, ive never hear Serra talk about a fellow fighter like that before. Hes usually a very honorable guy from what ive seen, obviously i dont know the guy personally.

I think his ego has become massive since he beat GSP, if your the champ you deserve respect, no doubt, but that doesnt mean you can disrespect other people. The childish name calling and all that on Serras part, it took him back down a few notches on the respect ladder for me. Hes talking about how Hughes is an ego maniac, cocky jock, etc.. but Hughes has been very classy through TUF 6 so far, even with everything Serra has been saying and doing.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

ya Mad, like i said, i liked Serra, he impressed me and he DID prove me and everyone wrong against GSP… no doubt about that. Like i also said, i havent been impressed at all by Serras attitude in TUF 6.

By saying i think he has less than a 1% chance, thats my honest opinion.. and if he fought GSP again, i would still give him less than 1% in the rematch.

I liked Serra for a long time, he was always hangin out with Genki at Abu Dhabi and he seemed like a really cool guy. Now he wins a tournament and wins one fight and becomes the champ, all of a sudden hes talking sht about a guy whos a legend.

now THATS disrespect, not me giving him a 1% chance.. str8 goods

Comment by MAD about 1 year ago

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion If that’s yours that’s fine.

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

yup, thats my stance.. and i hope Hughes smashes that guy, takes him down a notch and maybe Serra will realize that what hes doing is wrong.

Do you think a real champion would talk that much sht about a former champ? call him names and do impressions of him an sht? do you think Randy or Fedor or Chuck or Silva or ANY real champ would behave that way? no man.. no.

I dont think im the hater man.. i think Serra is the hater.

Moving on….

I agree BV.. you make more sense than low taxes and free government… I think that Doc is correct, it will be a Hughes win via decision… I am hoping that Serra gets in a few shots to make it exciting but they are both ground boys so I see it going to Hughes as he is the more seasoned against top competition. I think the Serra GSP thing was a fluke, well actually it was on GSP for watching the clock and not his opponent, I think this whole thing is a full circle situation where GSP relents to Serra (fluke) Serra relents to Hughes and Hughes vs GSP 3 happens and it all ends up BACK in the lap of GSP so this whole thing is a money train of title swapping for the UFC in the end… oh well, it will produce a Hughes GSP 3 which should be fun, I predict we will see that fight by April 2008.

I agree, that country boy “arrogance’ that Hughes displays could be misunderstood… I think he is pretty confident because he holds wins over BJ Penn, GSP, Trigg, and the list goes on… I have only heard him be a vocal jerk a few times, like when he was making fun of GSP for being “French” then he got his butt whipped… lol but Serra pushes the envelope, he is a lighter version of Baroni if you ask me… no class.. the guy has no class..

the only problem i see Hughes having in this fight is if he tries to box to much with Serra, Serra has some pretty heavy hands and if Hughes gets tagged hes probably going down. other than that is see a dryhump to the finish line for Hughes

Yeah…. I think Hughes learned his lesson in the 2nd GSP fight when he got picked apart rather quickly ….. he went back to dryhumping soon after and has stuck to his standard scoop slam dryhump ever sense.. I don’t see him breaking from that in this fight, my guess is he plays it safe like Arlovski (as of late) .. delivering a forgettable boring performance, generating a decision that will basically get the title in his hands…

I agree Kansas and RJ.. I hope Hughes learned his lesson after GSP 2 or he could end up ******** himself over again. If Hughes end up winning a man love decision.. that alot better than getting knocked out by Matt Serra like GSP did, plus he gets his title back. Man, thats gotta be embarassing.. Something Like the Sylvia vs Couture thing, but Randy has shown many times, hes not a guy to sleep on. I think the Serra loss was more embarassing, considering Serra had never KOed anyone before in his professional carreer.
