The UFC adds the next chapter to their PPV library this Saturday night as they return to New Jersey for the first time since UFC 53 in June of 2005. While UFC 78 has faced some harsh criticism for the perceived lack of a “main event” fight, there is no denying that this card is full of excellent fights and big-name MMA fighters.
Main Card
Michael Bisping Vs. Rashad Evans - Being a biased MMA fan, I really can’t determine if the “new” UFC fan is intrigued by this fight simply because both fighters are TUF winners. Also, the UFC is trying to spike interest because both fighters are technically undefeated - even though in my opinion Bisping clearly lost his last fight, and Evans’ had a draw in his last fight against Tito Ortiz.
I think Rashad Evans should win this fight pretty easily. Evans has vastly superior wrestling and a distinct advantage in quickness. If he wants too, Evans will be able to take Bisping down at will. If he wants to stand and trade (which seems to be what every UFC fighter wants to do lately) he should be able to hold his own against Bisping. I honestly don’t give Bisping and advantage at any aspect of this matchup and expect to see Evans win easily. Winner: Rashad Evans
Thiago Silva Vs. Houston Alexander - While the UFC hype machine continues to portray Houston Alexander as the next great MMA light heavyweight, he has never really been put to the fire yet in a fight. Thiago Silva will put Houston into that fire and really test his skills. While Houston is getting the hype, I believe Silva actually is much closer to being the real deal. While Alexander will have the edge in raw power, Silva should be able to take him to the ground and work his superb BJJ game on way to submission victory. Of course, Houston could always just punch Silva so hard, his head ends up in Hoboken. Who really knows. Winner: Thiago Silva
Joe Doerksen Vs. Ed Herman - This is a rematch of a 2004 fight which Doerksen defeated Herman via submission. Doerksen has the huge advantage in experience and opponents faced, having gone the distance with the likes of Matt Lindland and Nathan Marquardt. Ed Herman had a tough start to his UFC career after making the finals of The Ultimate Fighter but has recently won his last 2 fights. Unless Herman comes focused in a way he never has before I think this fight ends much like their first meeting with Doerksen walking away the victor. Winner: Joe Doerksen
Ryo Chonan Vs. Karo Parisyan - Karo Parisyan is still looking to get back a shot at the UFC welterweight title and Ryo Chonan is the next person standing in his way. Chonan is PrideFC veteran and has fought some of the best welterweights in the world, unfortunately losing to most of them. Chonan will bring a fast pace, which in my opinion, will only play right into Karo’s hands. Karo should be able to work his clich and judo game in this fight and grind out yet another patented decision victory. Winner: Karo Parisyan
Frank Edgar Vs. Spencer Fisher - Every time Spencer Fisher is on a fight card it seems we are looking at a possible “fight of the night” candidate and this matchup with Frank Edgar is no exception. Edgar brings his unblemished 7-0 pro MMA record into this fight while Fisher carries in the experience with a 20-3 record. Edgar has shown much promise with his excellent victory over Tyson Griffin and most recently making quick work of Mark Bocek at UFC 73. Edgar is both skilled in striking and wrestling and will prove a tough challenge for Fisher. Fisher, while not as strong on the ground, is a handful in the standup game and should be able to use his experience and technique to pepper Edgar with shots. If Fisher can avoid extended periods of time on the ground and doesn’t suffer any lapse in defense like he did against Hermes Franca he should be able to hand Edgar his first defeat. Winner: Spencer Fisher
Undercard
Chris Lytle Vs. Thiago Alves - Winner: Thiago Silva
Jason Reinhardt Vs. Joe Lauzon - Winner: Joe Lauzon
Luke Caudillo Vs. Marcus Aurelio - Winner: Marcus Aurelio
Akihiro Gono Vs. Tamdan McCrory - Winner: Akihiro Gono
I AGREE
I also agree, I can’t wait to see the Heat vs. Chonan, that should be a great fight.
LOL OZZY … IS THAT UR MUGSHOT
Yeah………I had a bad night, got drunk and bit the head off a bat………and then the hang over……..LOL

if houston alexander knocks out thiago silva then will u get on the band wagon?

If Alexander gets a third straight KO victory, I don’t see how I can avoid getting behind him. Three straight KO victories is not a fluke. Even if he KO’s Silva in 20 seconds, it still would legitimize his past 2 fights in my mind.

thats all i wanted to know
this event would be more interesting if it was the rematch of tito and rashad…whoever wins the main event match will still be 2 or 1 match away from getting a title, so in my opinion this should not been the main event…..houston alexander has proven that he is a knockout artist but not an unstoppable fighter, I would like to see him fight a fighter of high caliber like shogun rua or wanderlai silva fighters who can knock out an opponent and submit them
I’d rather see alexander in the HW division, match him against sylvia and knock him out cold
alexander vs arlovski would be 3 rounds of pure stand-up
I THINK ALEXANDER WOULD PROBABLY BEAT ARLOVSKI

LOLOLOL Houston Alexander wouldnt KO Tim Sylvia man.. Lets go back in history a bit. When was the last time Tim got KOed? oh thats right! NEVER!! lol.
It really boggles my mind.. People always hate on Tim because hes a boring fighter.. hes only had 6 fights go to decision in his whole carreer!! its just that hes had 5 decisions in his last 6 fights. Suffice to say, hes been in a bit of a slump, because hes afraid to take risks or whatever the reason is..
It doest change the fact that hes a 2 time UFC HW champ with a record of 24 wins with 16 wins by KO, 2 submission victories and 5 decision victories. Hes got 3 losses, 2 by submission and 1 by decision, the guys never been KOed in a fight. Hes fought the toughest HW fighters the UFC had to offer and he fought his way to the top, not like Serras little free title shot.
GET YOUR MIND RIGHT PEOPLE!! Tim sylvia is one of the best fighters in UFC HISTORY!!!
Lets look at Chucks Record, since everyone loves him off. Hes got 20 wins with 13 KOs. Already Tim has MORE FIGHTS and has MORE KOs THAN CHUCK. Chuck has 6 wins by decision so hes gone to the judges MORE TIMES than Tim. To top it all off he has 7 losses.. MORE LOSSES THAN TIM..
Is anyone out there??? does anyone watch mma besides me? GIVE TIM HIS RESPECT!
Im probably the biggest Tim Sylvia fan out there.. besides Tim and his team. I think people just dont like him cuz hes not a pretty boy.. nothing to do with his mma carreer. QUIT THE FCKEN HATE!!
One of my favorite fights of all Time. Saku vs Rampage..

Hey BV.. you know I have been behind Tim especially in his comeback run.. I was beating this drum before the Vera fight.. months before it and I agree with you totally…. doesn’t mean I don’t have a hundred different nicknames for the big OGRE… but yeah, the guy definitely has my respect.. for me its about the record, the fights, the wins, and the fighter…

SERIOUSLY! Preach brotha! haha.. I know man its frustrating … got some of those BROKE BACK guys out there, (no names but they know the movie front to back and can quote it) that only like pretty boys… hehe
I LIKE THE UGLY FIGHTERS THE KICK ARSE! WAND, TIM, AND ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE NOT AFRAID TO THROW DOWN OR GET HIT!
All those pretty boys… that don’t like to get hit like Tito need to pack it up…
I THINK ALEXANDER WOULD PROBABLY BEAT ARLOVSKI
You know its funny you would say that Patrick as you are an Arlovski fan through and through…. I appreciate your ability to put all things aside and post from a position of indifference, however I must disagree….
To date Alexander has done well, brawling, bum rushing, and just standing and throwing… I think Andrei’s physical conditioning MATCHES Alexanders, and I think that Andrei’s stand up is just as good, Alexander has not however been tested against a fighter that will in the midst of that bum rush default to the ground game, and we haven’t seen Alexander’s ground game but I know Arlovski’s is pretty darn good in the HWD… I think Arlovski would reel back on the bum rush, default to the ground with Alexander, and work him over until submission or GNP…

Uhhh no it wouldn’t be 3 rounds of pure standup, thats pure stupid …. it would be Andrei subbing or GNP him in the 2nd, after Alex blows his wad, and Tim would be Alexander, by default of he is one big Mo Fo and has the reach to keep the bum rush off or knock him out all together while he is reaching in.. or even take him to the ground and wear him out with his size then submit or GNP.. no Alexander couldn’t beat Tim.. why does everyone want to see someone beat Tim, they all said Monson would do it, then Andrei, then .. then…. then… I mean the guy came back from having his elbow capsule snapped back, and won the title again, and will win it again I guarantee, he is a good fighter….

Ya Kansas i know you dont hate on Tim.. even if you make comments like pigeon toe or whatever.. At the same time you often pick him as the winner of fights, so i wouldnt call it hating, just having a bit of fun.
But saying Houston should move up to HW and KO Tim is just silly.. Its not even just that comment, or even people from our site, but in general it seems like everyone hates on Tim. They boo him at the weigh-ins before and after fights, i have even more respect for him being able to take all that sht.
Man.. i hope Tim starts trying to finish fights again..

I would love it if Tim got his belt back! just to stick it to all the haters! hehehe
I like Franklin.. but after his 2nd fight with Anderson, it showed alot about his heart. If he was scared or whatever it was.. it wasnt good. Hes a good fighter and has all the skills and tools and conditioning to be the champ. I question his heart tho man.. not to say hes a puss or something.. but when your a fighting at that level, you have to have that little bit extra.
If Franklin had the kind of mentality that someone like Herring has, he would have been able to give himself a chance in that fight. Its sad to say, but i would probably have to put him in that pretty boy category, hes afraid to get hit, pure and simple. You CANT be afraid to get hit man.. wtf.. its not just a sport, you gotta be a warrior in there.
will it work this time??

what the hell ,i wasnt even in this conversasion but fu*ck it here we go i hate tim cuz he doesnt try to finish fights if he cant do it early he doesnt do it at all ,if u watch the vera fight again u can clearly here his corner telling him to keep vera on the fence the which tim did.A champ is in there to try to finish a fight not to hold and win a decision.

@Richard
read my post its #11 on this thread.
@ bvrasp
TIM clearly had a lot of advantages against monson..still it took the distance…the old Tim knocked out guys like rodriguez, Mcgee and Sims
about franklin…aahhhh….hes a pretty boy coz he doesn’t want to get hit…well I think he ATE a knee in the end of the first round….if someone got hit in the face with SILVA’s knee..that would really really hurt…UFC is not about the pretty boys vs the ugly dudes
but don’t get me wrong I think Sylvia should get a title shot soon knowing that he was a former champ….but did he really call out cheick kongo…..hell NO!… Nogueira should be the one his calling out
bvrasp
i read it but it still doesnt matter what corner tells u to hold in the corner ,for real yeah tim has ko power but the vera fight didnt show that it showed me he will do anything to get his belt back including holding when he shouldnt have to hes 6′8 265lbs former two time heavyweight champ with 16 kos he should fight like it all the time not just sometimes

Hey i agree with both you guys, he could have tried to finish Monson, but he was already ahead in points, so it was Monsons job to try and win the fight at that point. i could see the strategy there, it might be boring but maybe he was tired too man, wrestling around with one of the best submission guys in the game.
The point was, his decision victories just came recently, 5 decisions in his last 6 fights, before that it was all KO and Submission. Now that hes not doing as well, people say he sucks blah blah..
What about Royce vs Hughes? you think Royce sucks because Hughes beat him up, you would be wrong. It doesnt erase everything hes accomplished up to that point. Same with Tim, hes fought alot of tough fights man..
@Y
if you pay closer attention to the Franklin Silva 2 fight, he didnt give up at the end of the round. He was winning the fight half way through the 1st, then he started getting clinched up and he got SHOOK man, you could see it in his eyes. Then he went into pure defence mode, you cant do that against Silva. Franklins the bigger stronger guy he should have kept the pressure on like the whole first half of the round. By the time the round was over he was just getting hammered because he wasnt even fighting back.. very disappointing.
He was afraid man..

Richard, you give Houston more respect than Tim, a guy whos only had 2 fight in the UFC Just because he runs in and starts swinging. Theres alot more to the game than that, if you wanna survive long term in the sport, you gotta be smart man.
Id like to see him try that sht vs Rampage LOL.
