Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson at UFC 82

Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson at UFC 82

The biggest news coming out of last nights UFC 78 event in New Jersey didn’t happen during any of the fights but rather during the post-fight press conference.

Dana White announced that current UFC middleweight champion will fight current PrideFC champion Dan Henderson at UFC 82, currently scheduled for March 1, 2008 in Ohio.

This announcement comes as a somewhat mild surprise, as Dan Henderson has stated since joining the UFC that he wants to remain at the 205 division. My guess is that with the current depth of talent at light heavyweight and the current lack of talent at middleweight, Dana White was able to convince Henderson to drop back down to 185 lbs by offering a nice chunk of cash in a contract extension.

No matter how it happens, this should be an excellent fight and a much needed solid opponent for Anderson Silva.

now this is the kind of supermatch i want to see

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year ago

when Henderson first signed up with the UFC this was the fight i was hoping to see, but Dana and Dan both said he will be staying at light heavy. this is awesome news i think if anyone in the UFC challenge Anderson for his belt it will be be Henderson.

Comment by blevs about 1 year ago

why is every fight that henderson gets a title fight? ~

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year ago

im guessing its because hes a very talented, battle tested and proven fighter and the only fighter to hold two titles in a major org.

Comment by y about 1 year ago

I think henderson should stay in MW, not many interesting fighters there

Comment by bvrasp about 1 year ago

This is the best move for Dan.. secure that MW belt.. then if he feels that theres no competition for him, then he can come back to LH and go for the title there too. I think we all want to see Dan at MW.. great job by Dana talking him into it, if it takes money.. pay the man!

Yes sir, only one roadblock to Dan getting that title just yet and that would be none other than Anderson Silva.. lol

Hey if ANYONE can do it, it’s gonna be Dan Henderson for sure…. this will probably be in the top 3 fights of the year and I cannot wait…

Gotta say I love both fighters so its hard to say what will happen.. I give Hendo the edge only cause he is great at ALL aspects of MMA whereas Silva got caught by CHO once and showed a glimpse of what could be a hole in his game, who knows tho we will see..

Hey Kansas, how come you didnt bet on our boy??

I posted earlier that I thought I did.. I made “picks” but no bets cause I got busy Friday at work and Saturday I had family visiting.. lost track of time and thought I had made “bets” instead…SUCKS MAN .. I did pick Thiago though to win and got a couple points for that but … yeah wont happen again ..

Hey, are you picking Wand or Chuck for UFC 79?

Ya, thats happened to me before too..

Wand or Chuck? LOL is that a serious question?? Wand all the way! im betting the farm, the tractor, the chickens.. i might even bet my woman!! lol. Seriously man, if Wand loses to Chuck it will be very upsetting. Losing my cash at the playground wont bug me as much as Wandy actually losing. On the other hand, if Wandy WINS, the payout will be like the icing on the cake man hehe..

One things for sure, either way.. its gonna be emotional hehe

YEAH I AM BETTING THE WHOLE ROLL ON IT.. WAND MAN!

Oh also about the betting, i think everyone gets reset starting the new year, so no point in trying to hold on to money thats gonna be reset hehe lets go for it!

Hehe.. yeah now I am betting the whole thing on this fight man… between Hughes and Wand it should be good

Comment by MMAKansas about 1 year ago

I am hoping Wand brings all his cannons because Chuck is gonna be ready to wobble backwards and hit him. lol.. so I think STRATEGY and BOMB THROWING will be essential…

I heard Arona is octagon bound too, nothing signed ofcourse, but he made some statements about how the UFC is perfect for him because of the elbows and the “no roids” thing. He stated hes never used roids and finds it amusing that other pride fighters are performing so badly in the cage, he says it cuz of the BOM (roids)

its starting to look like im the only one here who thinks Anderson will smoke Henderson like Diaz with a dimebag. Henderson will need to use his wrestling and strength to hold Silva down and hope for the judges call. when Hendo fought Wandi he had a good shot at winning because Wandi gets pretty wild with his striking and that makes him a bit avoidable, Hendo will not have that luxury with Anderson. if Anderson starts to swing on Henderson its because hes GOING to connect and Hendo will drop. i just cant wait to see this fight!

Hey RJ you know me I am the biggest Chuteboxe fan on there with you and BV… you know the INTELLIGENT 3 … lol kidding .. but hey man this is going to be hard to call.. Hendersons got some led in those hands man… but I am betting the house on Anderson Silva regardless… I just am and thats that so GO CHUTEBOXE got SILVA!

I think this is matchup has the potential to be one the best fights we’ve ever seen. However, I get the impression that Henderson is not taking this fight too seriously. I think it’s that knucklehead competitive ego that forces him to keep looking for a more challenging LHW division. If this is the case, he better realize that Silva is no joke.

what amazes me about silva is that he connects a lot he really is a pin point striker and the power he has in his punches its crazy, but hendo has a lot of heart and trains hard so im going with hendo

thats it man, thats what im talking about. but the thing is all the training you can get and the biggest heart in the world is not going to help you much when your mind blank goes cuz Mr.Anderson is puttin the knuckles to ya. im not even sure if Anderson has big power as much as he just knows where to put em. you dont have to hit like a 20year old Mike Tyson just put a solid one on someones chin they’ll drop. and with Anderson every one is solid and squire on the chin. sorry Hendo ChuteBoxe will have its revenge, it’ll just be a different Silva to had it out thats all.

I would be very impressed if Anderson beat Hendo.. VERY, hes already the man for breaking Franklins spirit and holding down the belt. If he could succeed where Wandy failed, wow, that would be awesome!

Comment by mmahero about 1 year ago

We all know anderson is a devastating striker. No doubt there. The reason that anderson is so dominant right now is because all his opponents have chosen to strike with him. Bad move! I’m a huge anderson fan. He is the best striker I’ve ever seen. Better than anyone. His problem…. ground game. I know he is versed in submission etc but it is by no means extraordinaire. His ground game is like a very good submission artist. Nothing compare to his stand-up dominance to any other fighter. If you notice, nearly all his losses were when he’s on the ground. In fact, he even look more in danger when he fought an overweight dehydrated lutter than he was fighting franklin.

Hendo will win this superfight. Hendo is also a great striker though definitely no where near anderson’s level. If hendo choose to strike with anderson, hendo will get knocked out. It doesn’t matter what chin. It’s how it connects! However, if hendo is smart, he will pick his battle on the ground. Hendo will be successful in keeping anderson on the ground and pound him out. Either decision or TKO. I don’t see hendo get submitted by anderson. Unlikely.

The two worst fighters for any wrestler-based MMA fighters to face is Liddell and GSP. With this two guys, if u don’t outstrike them, u will lose because u will not be able to take them down. Anderson, though a better striker than liddell and GSP, do not have the take down defence as this two guys. So anderson will always be in danger if he fights real good wrestler that can take him down and pound him or just lay-and-pray for 5 rounds for decision win. Plus, I don’t see hendo ground game is that good to submit anderson and vice versa.

All good points man

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 1 year ago

@MMAHero
if you look at Andersons last 5 fight only 3 of them stayed on there feet and out of those 3, 2 of them were Franklin. Anderson doesnt need to dominate on the ground to win the fight, he cough Lutter with an up kick that led to a triangle and finished with elbows and with Marquardt he finished with punches while standing in his guard after a crazy surprise take down. if Hendo slips up for even a second it could be over on the ground or standing.

Henderson is a world-class Olympic wrestler…if he wants to bring Silva to the ground, Silva is going to the ground!!! Let’s not forget that Henderson is also considered a small LHW fighter, which makes him fighting @ 185lbs. much more natural for his size. It’s like I said, I can only see Henderson losing this fight because he feels like the 185lbs. division is too easy for him, thereby, underestimating Silva.

Amir, seriously I can see Henderson losing this fight in many different ways…. we could analyze it over and over, when it comes down to it, if Hendo is on his back, he is as useless as a cockroach, if Silva ends up on his back, it could be bad unless he can pull a submission which would be hard with Hendo on top… if its stand-up I have to give Silva a slight “chuteboxe” edge, thats his fortay and not Henderson’s … while Henderson has a good stand up game, don’t let one win over Wand on a bad night classify him as a “great striker” … if Henderson can get close enough to Silva without getting knocked out or clinched up in the process, sure I give him a huge chance of winning… but thats a big IF… I do think Henderson has a good chance of winning… but I think Silva has a bigger chance of winning…

are u saying this cuz he’s brazilian ,come on hendo is a great fighter and has power himself ,im not saying that hendo is a better striker but hes no slouch in that area plus hes faught guys with ko power before one much more than silva and koed that guy [but im not going to say his name so i dont offend kansas].Now on the ground hendo has went against big nog probably the best submission heavyweight out there and he had a hell of a time trying to submit him.So in conclusion i think they trade punches then if dan gets rocked hes taking anderson down and pounding him out,but im not counting silva out either i wouldnt doubt silva catching hendo with a flying knee while hendo attempts a take down either way a great fight.

RJ,

I agree if hendo slipped up for one second, he will be knocked out by anderson because anderson’s striking is unprecedented. However, for anderson to submit hendo, hendo may need to slipped up for at least 3 seconds. Frankly, anderson’s submission is untested. I don’t think he’s submission is that good. Frankly speaking, I don’t see anybody being able to submit experienced fighter like hendo. May be Fedor can submit hendo (if such a match will ever materialize) if hendo slipped up for even just half a second.

Let’s put it this way, if hendo fights anderson standing. He will lose. If on the ground, hendo will win (even if it’s just lay and pray). The probability for this fight to be standing is much slimmer than on the ground because anderson’s take down defence is not as good as his striking and hendo knows that. Let’s try to compare the weakness. If can be compared, anderson’s ground game is weaker than hendo’s stand-up if u like. You can do the math.

In other words, the gap between hendo’s and anderson’s striking is less than the gap between hendo’s and anderson’s ground game.

Hendo by decision. Kudos to Dana for making this happen, as the Middleweight division needs much more depth. The only way I can see Silva losing at Middleweight is to fight a world class grappler who can take a punch. Dan not only has these qualities, but can strike as well. Silva’s Spider Guard will keep Hendo from inflicting serious ground and pound damage, but Hendo will be able to take Silva down, maintain position control on the ground, and keep busy enough to prevent the ref from restarting the fight.

Richard… the word “brazilian” never even entered the post or was insinuated… you are arguing against a point I NEVER made… its about skill, not skin color or nationality dude..

Well guys …. both parties in this fight ” SILVA vs HENDERSON” have months to train and plenty of notice…. I think that Silva will work on his take down defense and like Forrest come into the fight with a game plan.. he isn’t dumb… Hendo will also come in, but with a game as tight as his take down game, not much to improve on there…

A side note, they both have everything to lose, but especially Henderson because 2 consecutive losses, and losing both titles consecutively really would make him an irrelevant force in the UFC. On the other hand Silva has been dominant and one loss would not make him irrelevant, he would get a rematch, so I think ALL the pressure is on Henderson at this point.
