UFC 78: Validation brought professional MMA back to New Jersey and overall the show was a solid event. Nothing to spectacular or outstanding happened, but there were some solid MMA fights.
- Rashad Evans vs Michael Bisping wasn’t quite the fight I had hoped it would be. I was surprised that Rashad didn’t let his hands go and try to trade strikes with Bisping a little more. Rashad’s hand speed and quickness are better than Bisping’s and I feel like he could have landed quite a few strikes to soften him up a bit. Seeing relentless takedown attempt after takedown attempt can almost be detrimental in my mind. The judges see Rashad trying to take Bisping down and do nothing else and after a while, I think you simply stop scoring points for that. Bisping showed some nice takedown defense and not much else. Pretty bland fight that I guess everyone was right in being upset about its “main event” status.
- Thiago Silva vs Houston Alexander went much like I thought it would. We hadn’t seen much of Alexander’s game and now we have. On the ground, Alexander looked much like I imagine Kimbo Slice will look once someone finally gets him to the mat: like a fish out of water. While I don’t think Silva is close to being a top 10 light heavyweight yet at this point in his career, the potential is there and it’s nice to finally see Alexander exposed. His two-fight run was night, but the hype surrounding him was starting to get obnoxious.
- Frank Edgar vs Spencer Fisher was simply an example of the word “clinic.” Frank Edgar schooled Spencer Fisher in the fine art of wrestling and containment and Fisher had no answer at all. Disappointing showing by Fisher; strong showing by Edgar. Frankie is definitely a guy to keep your eyes on in the future.
- The Karo Parisyan vs Ryo Chonan played out much like I thought it would. Karo continues to be a tough fight for any opponent and Chonan couldn’t hold his own. Ryo looked like he struggled at times adjusting to fighting in a cage, but even in a ring, this fight easily belonged to Karo. While Karo, unfortunately, will have to wait some time while the whole Matt Serra-Matt Hughes-Georges St. Pierre triangle gets worked out, I don’t see how Karo won’t get his title shot against whoever holds the belt out of that group.
- Joe Lauzon probably made the best career decision he could have when he chose to go train with BJ Penn in Hawaii. Lauzon already had a good BJJ game to begin with, but training with Penn in Hilo has only made Joe’s skills that much sharper. Considering Joe weighed 185 only 48 hours before his fight with Jason Reinhardt, his physical size will create some interesting match up problems for his other lightweight opponents.
- I still have not seen the Thiago Alves vs Chris Lytle fight but I’m hoping to get my hands on it soon. Alves and Lytle won fight of the night in what was, by all accounts, an excellent fight that was called after the second round due to a cut on Lytle’s face.

Nice breakdown Doc, anyone else have problems with the PPV feed for the “main event” if you can call it that?… Kinda sucked, missed most of the first round, but it was a lack luster fight anyways.
Houston DID look like a fish out of water, when he got mounted, he didnt do anything man.. he didnt even try to sweep, he didnt even roll over to give his back in an effort to escape. He just layed there and got punched in the face, im pretty sure his lack of effort was because he simply didnt know what to do. He tried to hold and cover for a while, but we all know that wont work for long. Good stoppage in my opinion, he wasnt going anywhere from that position.
Heres where i disagree with you Doc.. I dont think Spencer did anything wrong in that fight, he tried his best, but Edgar just owned him. This was the only pick i missed on the playground, i thought Spencer would have been able to defend the takedowns better and work his hands. It was definately a wrestling clinic and a ton of respect goes to Frankie beating a guy like Fisher so decisively. Great stuff!
Karo was really prepared for Chonan and his leg kicks, great preparation and strategy from Karo. Ryo is a good fighter man, but this was a bit short notice and his octaon debut AND against a guy as tough as Karo. He had everything going against him in this fight and he fought well, shutting down alot of Karos offence. It may have seemed like a boring fight, but these guys gave it everything man, Ryo did a good job defending and Karo was unable to finish him. I hope this doesnt discourage Chonan and id love to see him back in the octagon.
Wow i didnt know Lauzon was at 185 48 hours before the fight lol, nice little nugget Doc. Joe finished that fight VERY quickly, great showing!
Hey Kansas, how come you didnt bet on our boy??
I posted earlier that I thought I did.. I made “picks” but no bets cause I got busy Friday at work and Saturday I had family visiting.. lost track of time and thought I had made “bets” instead…SUCKS MAN .. I did pick Thiago though to win and got a couple points for that but … yeah wont happen again ..
Hey, are you picking Wand or Chuck for UFC 79?

yeah I didn’t know you could do that… go into negatives.. that DOES change everything, I will def have fun with that because on the Tim vs Vera fight, yeah I could have cleaned up more knowing I could go negative on there without getting shut down or something.. I will be more apt to bet how I WANT to now..

Yeah, the whole fight went down.. what the heck is THAT all about.. the UFC really needs to consider who they are threading their fights through on the networks because paying $40 for a fight, then having that happen, if that had been Wand and Chuck I would have lost it man… glad it was whats his name and whats his face…

Ya, thats happened to me before too..
Wand or Chuck? LOL is that a serious question?? Wand all the way! im betting the farm, the tractor, the chickens.. i might even bet my woman!! lol. Seriously man, if Wand loses to Chuck it will be very upsetting. Losing my cash at the playground wont bug me as much as Wandy actually losing. On the other hand, if Wandy WINS, the payout will be like the icing on the cake man hehe..
One things for sure, either way.. its gonna be emotional hehe
Oh also about the betting, i think everyone gets reset starting the new year, so no point in trying to hold on to money thats gonna be reset hehe lets go for it!

LOL if that was Wand vs Chuck.. oh my god! whoever fcked up would probably end up wearing a pair of concrete shoes the next day man! seriously!
problem fixed, comments are open again.
just remember next time, BV…
you break - you pay for it!!
YO ..HOW THE **** DO YOU CUT FROM 184 TO 155 IN 48 HRS… DAMM
I have no idea. Lauzon did it though and he didn’t look too bad at the weigh-ins. He said he was pounding the water the week of the fight to stay hydrated so a lot of the weight was water weight.
but still, thats a ton of weight to drop
THATS A JOE RIGGS RIGHT THERE .. BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT JOE WINS HIS FIGHTS AND DOESENT SUCK A HUGE ONE LIKE RIGGS

Dude that is a good question… I know that cutting 15lbs before a fight within 48 - 64 hours of it is hard, and its happened before.. but my lord man… almost 30 in 48 hrs is quite ridiculous… lots of sauna, lots of water fasting and lots of laxatives I guess..
EWWW I BET HE HAD A STANKY *** YO

So anything intelligent to post patrick??/ lol kidding
Hey Dr. J,
Even tough Zuffa doesn’t release the money figures for the event, how can we tell if it was a success or a “sell-out” as Dana White claims? don’t they release the number of PPV buys? and if so, can we compare those numbers to every other PPV this past year?
LOL KANSAS

Amir, we really have no way of knowing. The New Jersey athletic commission has already stated that they won’t be releasing fighter salary info or paid attendance info. PPV numbers have never been disclosed by Zuffa either.
MAN THAT RASHAD AND BISBING FIGHT WAS SO FUKKING BORING YO

How did i break it man?? one of the few times that i actually used the quote button and it crashed the whole thread! LOL
Just giving you a hard time BV.
I really have no idea why it croaked. I looked through everything and it all looked cool to me but something wasn’t working out, so I just cleaned up your one quote and it started working again.
