Rumors first started circulating yesterday that long-time UFC referee “Big” Jon McCarthy would announce his retirement from active refereeing this Friday night.
McCarthy scheduled a media call for Friday afternoon to make an, as of yet, undisclosed announcement. Well, it appears that everyone’s favorite “MMA reporter” [read: UFC schill] Kevin Iole may have blown this “secret” announcement completely out of the water.
According to Iole,
“Big” John McCarthy, who has been a referee since UFC 2 in 1994, will work the main event of The Ultimate Fighter finale on Saturday between Roger Huerta and Clay Guida and then announce his retirement.
McCarthy, 45, will take a job as an MMA analyst with The Fight Network.
McCarthy has been a UFC referee since 1994 at UFC 2 and appeared in every UFC since then except for one. Big Jon has done guest work with The Fight Network in the past and will be a good addition to their growing family of MMA experts.

This kinda sucks. I like Big John he’s like one of the faces of the UFC also. I wish him well and hope the replacements are as good as he was. The UFC is going to lose an icon of the sport even though he never competed.
i say Big Jon should be the first ref to make the hall of fame. its kinda weird to think Big Jon might not be there much longer, i aways though of it like fighters come and go but BJM is forever.

I hope they let Steve M ref the fight. He’s the second best ref in my opinion.

I think that Big John is probably sick of seeing some of these fights get twisted by Herb “bob marley” Dean and co. Its obvious that Big John is an honest guy, and its apparent that when there is a big fight on the line, most times they have Herb in there to make sure it goes the “right’ way, ie. cro cop vs Gonzaga… who ever heard of standing two fighters up when the bjj guy on top is GNP the guy on the bottom darn near to stoppage????? It was an obvious ploy to get the game back up and get it back in the “right” direction… had John been there, uhhh he would have waited until stoppage and called the fight appropriately… can’t have that can we?
