UFC Fight Night Live: Recap

  • The Mike Swick vs Josh Burkman ended up being a pretty lackluster fight in my book. Swick sure looks like a bean-pole at 170 and doesn’t look he he had any of the quickness and power he held at 185. Hopefully it is just a result of learning how to cut the weight for the first time as he said afterwards. Burkman looked pretty good but was unable to secure the takedown he wanted and ultimately that cost him the fight. Burkman should have abandoned the takedown attempts in the third round and just let his hands fly when it was apparently that Swick was not going to hit the mat.
  • Patrick Cote vs Drew McFedries was a pretty good fight. I always enjoy watching Drew McFedries fight because he has such fast, powerful hands. With a little more refinement of his defensive game, he could prove to be a very solid fighter. Congrats to Patrick Cote for winning again with another solid performance. Cote has always been a good fighter, his early UFC record just didn’t match his abilities. Don’t forget that Cote is the guy that went the distance with Tito Ortiz on short notice (the good Ortiz of 2004) and went the distance with fellow Canadian Joe Doerksen. This was the only fight I picked incorrectly in my preview, but I don’t mind at all; congrats to Cote.
  • Nate Diaz continued his slow but steady march as he made quick work of Alvin Robinson. Diaz jiu-jitsu game is solid and its good to see him rely on it and not try to out-strike his opponents like his older brother Nick. If you’ve got a talent, use it.
  • Thiago Tavares looked like he was walking in quicksand against Omigawa; not the same explosive fighter we have seen in the past. I’m going to chalk it up to Omigawa’s good defensive skills and call it a fluke. Tavares is good and still very young and will do great things in the future.
  • I wish we had been able to see the Jeremy Stephens vs Cole Miller fight. From all accounts it was an excellent battle.

I thought Alvin was going to give Diaz fits but he was submitted rather easily to my surprise. Thiago should have been able to finish that fight. He didn’t look near as aggressive as usual. Drew vs Cote fight was pretty decent. Drew did look a little over confident and I think that’s what cost him. Cote showed he has good power lately and is not scared to bang. Swick vs Burkman fight was pretty dull. Swick was to worried about the take down to mount any offense and Josh couldn’t let go of the idea that he couldn’t get him down. Led to a boring afair which sucks because normally both these guys are exciting fighters. Overall decent night of fights but could have been much better.

Burkman and Swick were fighting not to lose, instead of fighting to finish…
