UFC 81: Breaking Point Recap

February 3rd, 2008 | by Dr J
ufc81.jpg
  • Antonio Nogueira did what he seems to do so well last night. “Big Nog” was beaten handily for two solid rounds by Tim Sylvia but still managed to pull out a nice submission in the third round and won the UFC Heavyweight title. Tim Sylvia looked excellent and was throwing sharp strikes and avoiding Nog’s weak takedown attempts. However, Nog was able to secure top position and finish the fight and is now the only man to have held both the UFC and PrideFC Heavyweight belts.
  • Frank Mir proved that just because you wrestled a few years ago in college doesn’t mean you know how to “jits.” Brock Lesnar started off strong like we anticipated and took Mir down without much issue. I’m sure we’ll spend the next few weeks listening to how Steve Mazzagatti screwed Lesnar over by taking away a point and standing the fight back up. In reality, Mir was patient and knew he could catch the less experienced Lesnar in a submission if he baited him into it. Mir was working to secure a submission the whole time and was able to land a kneebar and finish Lesnar off. Watch the fight again and see how Mir sat up and grabbed Lesnar’s neck while he was in guard. Simply a tactic, because Mir new Brock would arch his back without controlling Frank’s legs, and when he did Frank was almost able to secure a triangle. When Frank finally grabbed hold of Brock’s leg, Lesnar did the absolute worst thing he could have and tried to leap out of the hold. Jumping for safety simply extended his leg and allowed Mir to sink in the leg hold even further.
  • Nathan Marquardt looked very good in his fight with Jeremy Horn. Landing a submission on the seasoned Horn isn’t easy, although Jeremy did leave his neck exposed for a good 5 seconds, allowing Nate to secure the choke. Good technical fight and I hope Horn decideds to stay around and fight a few more times.
  • Chris Lytle showed why he has the nickname “lights out” as he sent UFC rookie Kyle Bradley to sleep. Bradley was so out of it that he decided to pull guard on referee Yves Lavigne.
  • Ricardo Almeida came back to the UFC and reminded everyone what his MMA game is all about - submissions. Almedia made the fight look easy and will provide some much needed talent in the middleweight division.
  • I think with Mir’s victory and Sylvia’s loss, we are now setup to see a rematch between these two guys.
  • I can’t express how glad I am that Brock Lesnar lost. I can’t stand all the WWE/TNA hype the UFC has been promoting. Showing Kurt Angle, the Undertaker, and Steve Austin in the crowd is a bit much. Was this a tag team match or a UFC fight? I half expected the 123-Kid to run down the aisle and Doink the Clown to pop up from under the Octagon. I wouldn’t have minded if the UFC had started Lesnar off slowly and built him up with some easier opponents like they should have. Instead, they tried pushing Brock as someone who is already on the upper levels of MMA, and now they have to deal with the aftermath.

The bonuses for UFC 81 were the largest ever at $60,000. Frank Mir won submission of the night; Chris Lytle won Knockout of the Night, and Tim Sylvia and Antonio Nogueira won Fight of the Night.

Overall, no one had a great night for the MMA HQ fight Camp. This was one of the tougher events to predict in a long time and we all suffered a bit. I know, for me personally, this was my worst event in a while as I only got 4 out of 9 fights correct.

Tim “f—ing” Sylvia. What a piece of sh-t that guy is. I’ve always been a hater of his for all the trash talking he used to do about how good he was and how Pride fighters can’t match up to him and other UFC fighters. So, for one night I decided let me bet some real money on the guy. He beats the piss outta Nog for 2 straight rounds and then shows everyone exactly why he deserves to be hated.

well i didnt do very well last night. i went 4 and 5 with my pick and i lost on all my bets. i to bought into the idea that big Tim was back and going to pick Nog apart, i must have forgot how tough Nog is and how quick Tim will tap if you catch him in something deep. i am very happy to see Nog as the new champ and this will just further cement him as one of the best of all time. Mir vs. Lesnar went exactly the way it was supposed to as far as how it looked on paper, i didnt think Mir was going to able to catch Lesnar with anything but he snapped on that nice kneebar (that wasnt even THAT deep) and show he knew exactly how to beat the rookie. i pick a couple underdogs to win and i went 50% Boetsch pull one out but Bradley got murdered. what can i say about Marquardt vs. Horn i picked Nate to win but it killed me to see Horn lose. the Griffin fight i hardly watched so im not to sure if it was good or not but the parts i did watch didnt really do it for me. Almeida showed he has lost nothing and i hope he keeps it up and helps beef up the middle weight division. the other two fights are not even worth mentioning so i wont. all in all i was happy with this card (but then again im always happy when im watching fights good or bad) sorry this post is a long one lol but you all know me by now i got a lot to say lol.

by the way if Tim Boetsch look like that in every fight he will become one of my favorites real quick. lol when he threw Heath into the cage like a little b*tch i had tears in my eyes i was laughing so hard, i didnt even know when the ref stopped it till i watch the replay lol.

I enjoyed the card as well. I was happy with the results, except for the Horn fight. If had some more time to prepare it might have been different, bu tas it was he got served quite handily by Marquardt. The Mir/Lesner fight was where I got almost half my points, I figured Mir would find a way to get him tied up in something before the first round was over. I was impressed with Lesner and really hope he gets a fight more at his level. Given some time and experience (and a better training camp) he will be the heavyweight champion. As the dust settles from the Pride/UFC takeover it seems pride fighters did fairly well. It seems both organizations had a similar amount of great fighters.

Doc, you and your boy Mir got saved.. THAT is the reality of it. That fight would have been over within a few more seconds if Steve didnt jump in. I thought Lesnar did a great job of controlling the position, shuting down submissions and dominating the fight.

The Triangle you mentioned wasnt even close, clearly Brock was training to avoid armbars and triangles and he did a good job considering how inexperienced he was (Especially considering how skilled Mir is).

What ended up deciding the fight was 2 things, Brocks team not making him aware of heel hooks enough and Brocks over confidence. I saw that heel hook coming a MILE AWAY! when Mir put his left foot behind Brocks knee, i was like NO! NOOOOOOO!! this should never have happened considering the history of big guys getting heel hooked.. His team really dropped the ball. If brock was training with someone like Hughes, that would have never happened, also he would have had much more effective GnP because he was throwing some really pathetic hammerfists for a guy his size.

Mir on the other hand looked terrible, even his heel hook attempt was SLOW AS HELL and Brocks ignorance was the only thing that SAVED Mir in that fight, if he was fighting anyone else in the division that wouldnt have worked.

About Horn.. hes an amazing grappler with an incredible chin man! the problem is, hes an under achiever. Hes the kind of guy who get 60% on a test without opening a book, but he would never bust his *** to try and get a 90% let alone 100%. Does that make sense to anyone besides me? lol

Anyways, great job by Marquardt avoiding Horns submission attempts, he was rolling with one of the best in the world man. In my opinion this was the best fight of Marquardts career, AND fight of the night.

Tim looked great in that fight, i hope he starts getting the respect he deserves almost Knocking out the #2 heavyweight in the world. Nog did what he does best and i called that one perfectly on the playground 3rd round submission, great stuff.

Hey.. lost the mother load on Tim in this fight… no problem though I wanted Nog to win, it was a logical bet, but I am glad I was wrong. Go Nog!

As far as Mir/Lesnar, I called it, I stood by my call, and I am glad to see Frank in fine form again, he pulled a superb submission after getting elbowed half to death by Lesnar, I did feel that the ref was justified in warning Lesnar, as far as people saying Brock got robbed on that stop and reset, I don’t think so, this isn’t street fighting, there are rules just like in football, you interfere in a pass, you get a penalty and that penalty can cost you a game, a season, a superbowl, it cost Brock his debut, because had he not begun just slamming Mir to the back of the head, he would indeed have won the fight, so really Frank didn’t win as much as Brock lost… Horn came into the fight last night looking out of shape, he has a great attitude, but I don’t think he put forth even 50% of what he has into training and in the octagon last night.. it was sad to see Jeremy Horn get submitted like that… just sad…

Well, I think the UFC will sell soon, some of the rumors flying around are that he is getting offers from the WWE, I could see that happening, and I would hate it all the way, no better way to turn the UFC from a “nitch” sport into a household name… but no better way to drive away its hardcore base and talent, I think it would have problems if it went that direction, to the point of shutting down, but thats all stipulation and not fact yet…

Kansas, did you notice the NASTY elbow Horn caught to the back of the head? the ref didnt say anything there.. no warning, nothing.

In Lesnars case, he got no warning either, he got a point deducted and STOOD UP! whats all that about? i dont care about the point really even though it was BS, the real problem was the standup. Why not start back in the same position? With Brock in half guard.

It was complete BS man, you guys just arent admitting it because you wanted to see Lesnar lose. If that happened to Wandy im sure you would be pissed Kansas lol.

Comment by Dr J about 10 months ago

I agree that they point deduction was rediculous. Lesnar was not warned and it simply should have been a warning. I think Maz went in there to stop the fight because he thought Mir was finished and then once he got them separated he realized Mir was fine and new that he had to do something since he had stopped the fight.

A warning would have been fine, but a point deduction with no warning is bogus. However, with a warning they should have been stood up. Anytime you see someone get a warning, the fight is always restarted on the feet. If Brock got a warning, it wouldn’t be fair for him to keep the dominant position so the standup was definitely justified. The point deduction was bogus, but the standup was justified in either case.

I hate Brock Lesnar, I think he is a joke, a freaking WWE girly man with tons of strength but big for nothing…

I am stating the FACTS pal… as far as the point deduction, I agree with DOC.. Maz screwed up… Mir survived fine, Brock should have been stood up though.. period.. warned yes.. point deduct.. RIDICULOUS…

WELCOME TO A NEW ERA WITHOUT GOOD REFS LIKE BIG JOHN!

Well Kansas, i was never a WWE fan, so i dont really know much about Lesnar. All i see is a Huge guy whos got great wrestling skills and is SERIOUS about MMA.

Love him or hate him, i think Brock is here to stay, regardless of all hype, he could become a great fighter, a REAL fighter.

I think he destroyed Mir in that fight and i would pick Lesnar again in a rematch. He completely dominated Mir guys, the foreign environment of the octagon and the dumb ref call contributed to Brock losing. Hes green and hes a rookie in this game plus the confusion that occured.. relish the moment guys, because i dont see that ever happening again after this loss.

Next fight, no matter the opponent, Brock will CRUSH them!! i like the guy, hes obviously a determined athlete who loves to compete, not perform a muscle bound ballet at WWE.

Lesnar needs to train at Miletich man..

im with BV on this one, Lesnar is a beast and he needs some work but i really feel like hes gonna be a contender sooner or later. think about what he did, he could have won just as easily as he lost last night and hes fighting Frank Mir a true vet and he has almost no MMA experience. Lesnar made a rookie mistake because hes a rookie. as long as Brock wants to keep going he will get better and start winning against top ten fighters.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on this one Kansas. Lesner is the real deal, and was damn close to winning that fight. A little polish no his game, and some more fights under his belt he won’t be losing many more. It was a mistake to put him in with someone as crafty as Mir for his 2nd MMA fight ever. I agree with BV MFS was made for guys like Lesner, he should seriously consider training in Bettendorf.

I’m pretty sure that Steve Mazzagati was briefed, and knew in general, well before the fight that since Lesnar was so inexperienced…he would have to watch him closely. Lesnar could probably kill a man with direct blows to the back of his head.

I mean, most of the real, experienced pros out there like Mir know that their opponents are experienced enough to fight in a professional manner without having to worry about illegal hits like that. This particular fight though, was like the first days of the UFC, where anything goes. I told my buddy to bet $50 on Mir and he won, I bet my $50 on Sylvia and that piece of sh-t did what he did, tapped out like a little bit*h immediately.

And we bet REAL MONEY btw.
