Liddell vs Shogun at UFC 85 Off

March 4th, 2008 | by Dr J

Just five months after having surgery to repair a ruptured ACL, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has re-injured the same knee and will not be able to fight Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 this June.

Thomas Gerbasi at UFC.com is reporting that Rua will undergo a second operation on his knee soon, but has no idea when he will be able to return to action. Rua injured the knee at UFC 76 in a loss to Forrest Griffin.

It’s sad to say, but it looks like Rua’s best days may be behind him. Shogun already suffered a major injury to his right elbow in a fight against Mark Coleman in PrideFC, and now is facing back-to-back injuries on his ACL. A knee injury, no matter how severe, can be career ending. With Rua suffering the same injury to the same knee in less then 6 months is not a good sign.

A new opponent for Liddell has not yet been named, but an announcement should come shortly. UFC 85 is currently scheduled for June 7 in London, England and is expected to also feature Fabricio Werdum vs Brandon Vera.

SENGOKU I tomorrow night guys! its a great fight card, you should make a post Doc, i personally find it much more interesting than WEC events.

Heres the fight card

Makoto Takimoto vs. Evangelista Santos
Kazuo Misaki vs. Siyar Bahadurzada
Hidehiko Yoshida vs. Josh Barnett
Ryo Kawamura vs. Antonio Braga Neto
Fabricio Monteiro vs. Nick Thompson
Takanori Gomi vs. Duane Ludwig
Kazuyuki Fujita vs. Peter Graham

Ill be especially intetrested in seeing Barnett, Yoshida, Fujita and Gomi back in action.

I got it. No post about the Sengoku show for a few reasons.

The biggest reason was the fact that it wasn’t being shown here in the US.

The second reason is that I forgot to type something up about it over the weekend to be honest.

Kansas that fight was scheduled for like 3 months from now man.. im thinking about whats going on now, and thats Sengoku tomorow night. your not interested in that event?

Comment by MMAKansas about 9 months ago

Nope.. not really… if I paid attention to all the events going on all the time I wouldn’t have time to train myself and focus on the other aspects of LIFE in general.. :) but I assume its gonna be pretty stellar..

Believe it or not, this is really bad for the UFC…because aside from Shogun, the light heavys only have a few guys that can even come close to making this a fight.

Let’s see how the UFC reacts to this news. There are the very few good fighters that can step in for Rua.

Logical:

Wilson Gouevia
Thiago Silva
Houston Alexander
Sokoudjou

Joe Silva’s logic:

Rashad Evans
Matt Hamill
James Lee
etc.

P.S. I left several off this list because they have upcoming fights(Wandi/Jardine, Griffin, Machida…so these names might not be accurate.

Thanks Amir for acknowledging the gravity of this development, obviously YOU understand how bad this sucks for EVERYONE including Chuck…

almost every light heavy you just mentioned has i fight coming up.
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura 05/24/08
Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva 05/24/08
Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic 05/24/08
Houston Alexander vs. James Irvin 04/02/08
Matt Hamill vs. Tim Boetsch 04/02/08
the only one i cant find a fight coming up is…. James Lee, so i guess that the man lol.

Things can be shifted around and adjusted for the betterment of Kansas’ world.. I am sure Dana and Joe are listening…hehe GET THIAGO IN THERE TO FIGHT CHUCK! HAHA!

Houston was such a joke in that fight … I remember the pre-fight interview “everyone is asking about my ground game, don’t worry about my ground game, you will see my ground game if it goes there” LMAO! WHAT GROUND GAME! HAAAAH!…

Honestly, my choice for Liddell to fight would be Thiago Silva, I mean they looked like they were gonna throw him a real challenge, so Thiago is the next best thing to Shogun in my opinion, Houston, no challenge.. Chuck would just use his reach to beat Houston silly and either KO in the 3rd or pull a unanimous decision..

Thiago handily beat Houston, picked him apart in every way, he has the reach, and height and the Chuteboxe background, youth, everything to make a great match with Chuck, I think if Shogun cannot make a comeback by mid to end of summer, Thiago is the next gen representation for Chuteboxe/Muay Thai, other than of course our friend Anderson Silva.. the greatest 185er in history baby, no boring 5 rounder decisions from that guy..man he handles business in 2 rounds or less …. or yo money back suckas! haha
