After watching Kalib Starnes completely avoid fighting Nate Quarry at UFC 83 this past weekend, it should come as no surprise that the UFC has released Starnes from their fighter ranks.

Starnes fought (or didn’t fight) so pathetically that one judge even scored the fight 30-24 (which seems pretty accurate to me). Starnes still has remained quiet about the fight and his reasoning for turning the match into a track meet up to this point.

Kalib now is claiming that he is glad he has been freed from his UFC contract and has been wanting to be out for some time now according to a story on TSN.ca.

But the 33-year-old middleweight from Surrey, B.C., declined to discuss what happened in the lopsided fight Saturday night in Montreal or why he wanted out of the UFC, saying he would comment further once his UFC exit paperwork was complete.

“Until that happens, I don’t feel comfortable talking any more about it,” Starnes told The Canadian Press on Monday from his training base in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“Personally, I couldn’t be happier to be released from my UFC contract,” Starnes added.

Naturally UFC President Dana White isn’t letting Starnes off the hook so easy:

Said UFC president Dana White: “I don’t care if Starnes says we cut him, or he asked to be let go - at the end of the day if you’re a professional fighter, and you are fighting in the UFC in front of your hometown crowd, you have to show up to fight,”

** UPDATE **

Starnes finally responded today via an interview with TheFightNetwork.com:

Starnes told The Fight Network that he requested his release from the remainder of his UFC contract, which had been carried over from his appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series and ensured him three fights per year.

“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me that it usually takes a couple of days for their legal department to complete the paperwork and that he would send me all of the paperwork to indicate that my contract has been dissolved,” Starnes said. “Later on in the afternoon, after I had spoken to Joe Silva, a story was released by some reporter from Yahoo! in which Dana White said that he had released me from my contract. I received no documentation on that, and it came after I asked to be released.”

Starnes – who dropped a unanimous decision to Quarry and was booed by his fellow Canadians for failing to engage – called White’s comments unprofessional and inappropriate.

“In my opinion, it was inappropriate to make public statements regarding my character and my future and so on the way that he has, especially without having the courage and the respect to call me up and speak with me personally,” Starnes said. “All of these comments come from a man that has never had a fight in his entire life who claims to be the ultimate authority on fighting and courage. I couldn’t be happier than to be released from the most oppressive contract I’ve ever been under in my life.”

According to the American Top Team-trained fighter, injuries led to his switch from an offensive to defensive mode against Quarry. For a majority of the fight, Starnes back pedaled out of harm’s way and away from his opponent’s dangerous punches. A former challenger for the UFC middleweight championship, Quarry battered Starnes with leg kicks throughout the three-round bout.

“Right now, I have a broken foot [that] I sustained with the first kick I threw in the fight,” Starnes said. “My leg is purple and black from my knee up, I have a black eye, a sprained jaw, and he’s questioning my desire to fight? If that isn’t enough to satisfy him and the crowd, I can show them the medical report. I can barely walk. [Quarry] totally destroyed my thigh with those kicks. I’m sure a lot of people would rather see me suffer a traumatic brain injury and be rendered unconscious. That’s too bad. If that’s what they want, they’re paying the wrong guy $10,000 to get his brain smashed in.”

Starnes then invited White to walk a few feet in his shoes.

“Dana White wouldn’t stand and trade with a guy [like Quarry] who had an 80 or 90 percent knockout ratio with injuries like I had Saturday night,” Starnes said. “He wouldn’t cross the street for $10,000. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’m not about to stand there and get smashed to pieces. After I knew my foot was broken, I was trying to back up and work off the jab and keep moving so I didn’t get knocked out.”

Rumors also surfaced Monday that Starnes had dropped a bombshell – that his performance was a direct protest to his pay rate and insurance that he would be let go from the remainder of his contract – on a Montreal radio show following his match with Quarry. Starnes called the rumors ludicrous.

“Any report or rumor that I came on any radio station to comment on the fight or circumstances surrounding the fight or in reference to the UFC or Dana White is completely false,” he said. “I’ve been back in Florida since Sunday, and it was Dana White who decided to come out and publicly attack my character, not the other way around. That’s the way he felt like he should go. Maybe he thinks that character assassination might prevent me from moving on and fighting for another organization or carrying on a career. If he thinks it’s appropriate to attack me, it isn’t.”

My thoughts on Kalib “24″ Starnes..

Im not gonna talk about his personality or how i think hes a ***** (which i do, but anyways) lets just look at his performance and the excuses he offered in this one fight.

I agree with the 24-30 score, because even in the first round, he did nothing in the fight. So heres my breakdown as im watching the fight again.

1st round Kalib throws jabs from about a foot away, nowhere even near Nate, and 2 front kicks (also VERY far away from Nate). 2 clinches happen, does Kalib explode to try and get the takedown and possibly have the edge over Quarry? no, hes actually defensive in the clinch aswell.

- Hmm.. i thought he said he broke his foot from the first kick he threw? well the first 2 kicks missed, so i assume he meant the first kick that landed.

2nd round Starnes comes out with a 2 punch combo followed by a takedown attempt, both of which were unsuccesssful. It looked like his corner said something to him and he actually stepped it up. After the first 10 sec, he went back to running away the rest of the round, but now Nates leg kicks are starting to take effect. Kalib catches a kick and takes Nate down but is unable to capitalize on it and Nate is right back to his feet. This was Kalibs best round, which he still lost, possibly as a 10-8 round.

- Ok Kalibs first kick that landed was that leg kick with his rear leg, it was a bad position where the top of his foot connected with Nates kneecap. Honestly, it didnt look to me like he “broke” his foot, there was no reaction on his face and he didnt lose the bounce in his step at all. I dont know if any of you have ever broke your foot, but even with the adrenaline, it not only hurts, but it ceases to function properly.

3rd round was leg kick clinic, Kalib did nothing all round, Nate just punished his lead leg for 5 min.

- This round, Kalib developed a limp which showed weakness in his FRONT leg, which is understandable because of the amount of leg kicks it absorbed. His “broken” foot looked great though, often on his toes and the ball of his foot. He even threw ANOTHER KICK with his “broken” foot near the middle of the round. If this was a head kick going for the KO then maybe, but a leg kick at the end of the fight? that will do nothing but jeopardize your already “broken” foot? umm.. no.

i dont even know what to say about Starnes hes a tool. he is right about one thing, he shouldn’t be the guy making $10,000 a fight. sh*t man i wouldn’t pay him $10 to fight a blind midget with one leg because hes just gonna run from him anyway. i dont care how hurt i am, someone pulls out the Screech on me and im jumpin on em faster then a fat chick on a bonbon. no excuses Gheylib, just tell it like it is you have no sack!

Well, I just want to start out by saying that what Kalib Starnes did during UFC 83 was unacceptable. He would have been way better off just going out there and giving it his all one last time before leaving the UFC. Instead he completely disrespects the sport, his employers, and most importantly in his line of work, the fans, on a live PPV being watched by millions. Not to mention he looked like a complete Nancy. But in all fairness, $10,000 isn’t all that much money to be making in the UFC, considering how much the camp costs and also paying for his own medical expenses and whatever else. He was probably frustrated and let the ******* inside take over for awhile, we are all susceptible to that some time of another. Unfortunately he let that happen at the most inappropriate time, which pretty much takes any merit from what he has to say to defend himself.

What can be said about Kalib Starnes, that hasn’t already been said by thousands of people on dozens of websites already?
The guy is a complete tool, he disgraced everyone and more importantly, himself. For any other MMA organization to hire him would be an embarrassment and show that they are second-tier to the UFC, so I really hope none of them do…just to prove a point.

For Starnes to call everyone out just because they don’t fight is complete absurdity and so immature. It’s obvious that his beef is not with anyone but himself, for choosing this field of work as a career, which he obviously can’t handle.

What happened Kalib? did you honestly think you weren’t going to suffer any injuries from this or any fight for that matter? all your good at is getting injured. You should just become a professional “trainer” @ ATT. That way, you’ll never have to fight again, and only have to train and get injured that way. From my persepctive, he should be kisisng the UFC’s *** for even bringing him the little fame he has, well…now he’s pretty much infamous I guess.

Nate Quarry said he wanted to have this fight a long time ago and Kalib’s camp “declined”, because Quarry had come off of a loss and Kalib had won a fight, so he wasn’t “worthy” to fight hhim…lmfao
