UFC 85 Live on SpikeTV? [Rumor]

The UFC may have accidentally announced that UFC 85 will be broadcast live on SpikeTV instead of a Pay-Per-View event as previously indicated.

According to a report on UFC.com’s event schedule page earlier this morning, UFC 85 was listed as a SpikeTV event to be broadcast live starting at 3 PM EST and shown via tape delay on the west coast.

Nokaut.com is refuting report of a live event on SpikeTV and says the event is still currently a PPV event:

Just to clarify the confusion surrounding UFC 85, despite UFC.com listing it as airing on Spike TV, we have word directly from Spike’s mouth that this is an error on UFC.com’s side that is currently being fixed. As of now, it is still on PPV.

My guess is that the UFC is scrambling like mad to move the event from PPV to SpikeTV knowing the weakness of the fight card.

With the original main event between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans cancelled this week due to Liddell’s leg injury, the fight card was left without a marquee matchup. James Irvin has agreed to replace Liddell and fight Evans, but that fight is in no way strong enough for a main event.

Current rumors indicate that the new main event may be a middleweight fight between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben. With Bisping being an English native, this fight makes slightly more sense as a main event for a SpikeTV show. At the moment, UFC.com still lists the heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Brandon Vera as the main event.

Another huge rumor is that a heavyweight title fight between Antonio Nogueria and Frank Mir may happen at UFC 85. Adding the heavyweight title fight may give the card just enough credibility to still remain a decent PPV event. What do you think?

I thought Mir was scheduled to face McCully here soon. If the fight does happen it would be a good one. Two of the best submission heavies battle it out. I’m a little torn but for some reason I think Mir would win. He’s started looking like his old self the last couple fights and is an very smart fighter. I would still order the PPV as usual but showing this live on Spike would be better.

Charles McCarthy Retires:

“I would like to announce my formal retirement from mixed martial arts competition,” he wrote. “I have achieved many of the goals I set out to accomplish in this sport and found others just out of reach. It is now time for me to lay down my gloves and rededicate my attention towards my business, my fighters, my family and my team.”

i just read on mmaweekly in the rumor section that at UFC 87, Kenny Floian will fight Roger Huerta. if this one is true then damn thats gonna be a good one. who would you guys pick in that fight?

Yea BV,

Pretty laughable that McCarthy is considered a seasoned “vet” in the UFC or that he even considers himself “successful” in this sport. McCarthy should have had his contract torn to pieces right next to Kalib’s, as far as I’m concerned. He’s just lucky that his performance was overshadowed by Starnes.

yeah no doubt Amir if Kalib didn’t fight that night everyone would be ripping on McCarthy. him saying he accomplished somethings and others were out of reach means “at least i got to fight in the UFC even though im not that good” its cool though it makes room for a good middle weight, Filho anyone?

i was kinda hoping for a Spike show when Shogun dropped out and it would be really cool if the UFC did do it on Spike, even more so because im sure the pay per view numbers are gonna drop big time with no Iceman selling it.

Yeah I would buy Mir vs Nog if that ended up being the Main Event. Otherwise, I’m only going to watch it if its free. As much as I like “The Count”, a main event versus Leben wouldn’t be enough incentive for me to purchase the PPV.

as much as this “Frenchie” thinks your a douche bag, i also think you have a good point and i also would like to see Mir vs. Nog. i think the fight would end up a standing affair with Nog out boxing Mir.

Doc, have you seen this?

UFC 85 Main Event: Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves

According to matt-hughes.com:

June 7th, in England, I fight Thiago Alves. The fight is confirmed, it will be the main event for the card. Dana just called me with the news. Chuck got hurt and couldn’t fight, so he needed a replacement and called me and I said yes. More news as I get it. No matter what happens in this fight, I’ve got Serra next.
