Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben at UFC 85

April 26th, 2008 | by Dr J

A rumored fight between Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben has been officially booked for UFC 85.

Earlier in the day, the UFC officially added Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves as the new main event for UFC 85 after Chuck Liddell was forced to withdraw from his fight with Rashad Evans.

The televised portion of the fight card actually looks pretty decent now with the following fights:

  • Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves
  • Chris Leben vs Michael Bisping
  • Marcus Davis vs Mike Swick
  • Rashad Evans vs James Irvin
  • Fabricio Werdum vs Brandon Vera

There isn’t one single standout fight, but there are five solid matchups. Follow that with an undercard that includes Nathan Marquardt vs Thales Leites and you have a pretty decent event.

Chris Leben is one of my favorite middleweight fighters in that class, probably ranks as far as fun to watch, in the top 4 best, he is just a fun guy to watch fight, he has a tough jaw, he slugs it out, he is colorful in his presence/presentation -

That all being said and purely opinion, I think Chris has a rod iron jaw that only the best can shake (ie. Anderson Silva) and that he will take whatever “The Count” brings and give back something terrible. I also think that Chris much like BJ Penn is taking his “career” more seriously and training MUCH harder so is becoming more viable and will be a good rematch for Anderson Silva in 1 year or so pending he gets better at his feet/head movement, and can work on his agility a bit … I also think this is a GREAT match up and believe this will be a seller for me anyways to watch UFC 85, (didn’t use the word BUY just yet guys) I am excited NOW about this fight for sure.

My pick is Leben round 2 KO

by no means is Leben top 4 or anywhere even close to that but I am rooting for him to KO the cocky arrogant Brit.

He said top 4 most fun to watch, not top 4 best fighters.

With that updated fight list, there is no title fight on the card, yet it has luster… I don’t see it’s need to go to Spike for all you guys out there looking for a lackluster freebie, I mean c’mon you got:

Brandon Vera vs Fabricio werdum… that fight has a lot of potential, and then Thiago vs Matt Hughes.. another really good fight with potential then MARCUS DAVIS vs MIKE SWICK??? Dude that is an AWESOME fight, its going to be fireworks the entire 2 rounds it lasts… I am not thrilled about Rashad and Irvin, course i don’t like lay and pray wrasslers that much anyways but hey the card goes well with me, and Leben/Bisping, that is going to be an exciting fight, both fighters are gonna come in looking to really put on a show I think..

kansas
do u remember the last time irvin faught a up and coming lay and pray guy,i seem to remember a flying knee,so evans needs to be very careful.

Comment by MMAKansas about 5 months, 1 week ago

Sure he does, but the fight doesn’t interest me much.. so that is that.. hope it goes well for them but Tito’s fights never interested me much and Rashad is a black Tito.. so I have no interest in his fight much… just don’t care for his style..

I prefer fighters that let it all hang out and give it all not matter what… Davis, Wanderlei, Penn, Leben .. guys that can take a punch and give one back, that like to really fight… I just don’t see that much in lay and prayers.. Randy is the exception not the rule..

Yup, i agree with Kansas on this guys, its shaping up to be a decent fight card, some very interesting matches. There have been MUCH worse cards in the past, but im sure we all watched them anyways hehe. I think this is gonna be an exciting one guys.

i must admit Leben has always been a guilty pleasure, i even wanted him to win the first TUF and Bisping is starting to grow on me a bit. Bisping has a good style for Leben because hes a great striker but hes calm and controlled and even since Leben made the move to Hawaii hes looked very good but didnt lose the warrior spirit or the heavy hands, so this bout should be a banger and some fun to watch.

Talking about Leben, he just got booked on a DUI and violating his parole. Hes being held without bail but im sure the UFC will spring him out somehow..

Comment by MMAKansas about 5 months, 1 week ago

What an idiot… has a fight in less than 8 weeks and he pulls this crap!?!… Geesh..

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 1 week ago

agreed, some of these fighters need to think a little harder about how this sort of stuff will effect your JOB. and what the hell is Leben doing out drinking while hes training for a fight anyway, and just when i thought Leben was starting to take his career seriously.

i didnt know Leben was on parole, he should consider himself lucky to be fighting for the UFC. i had a shot almost ten years ago (the UFC was in dire need of smaller fighters) and my criminal record put an end to it but fast. the UFC didnt like the idea of felons fighting for them and the athletic commissions didnt like it ether, i also had no manager or big name trainer to help me talk them into it ether. i guess you dont really know what you got till its gone.
