UFC 84: Ill Will Recap

May 25th, 2008 | by Dr J
UFC 84
  • BJ Penn put to rest any doubt some people might have had regarding his “right” to the UFC Lightweight title. Penn handled Sean Sherk without any problem and looked extremely sharp with his striking game. Penn used his long arms and Sherk’s smaller frame to his advantage and continually peppered Sherk with stiff jabs that kept the “Muscle Shark” off balance. I’d like to see Penn stay at lightweight and continue to face some of the top level 155 lb fighters as it is one of the deepest divisions in the UFC.
  • Even if you are not a Wanderlei Silva fan, you couldn’t help but smiling and getting excited as you watched him demolish Keith Jardine last night. Wandi showed early patience and then that tenacious killer instinct from his past as he quickly finished Jardine off and left the “Dean of Mean” lying on the canvas for nearly 10 minutes after the fight. As we’ve seen with Jardine in the past, when he loses a fight he manages to do so in spectacular fashion.
  • While many probably viewed Lyoto Machida’s victory over Tito Ortiz as another boring performance, there is no denying that it was yet another technically masterful fight. Machida has to be one of the most skilled fighters and one of the best “defensive” fighters in the UFC today. As “boring” as he may be, he will be tough for anyone to defeat. Ortiz fought much like I anticipated and shouldn’t be surprised when the high paying contract offers don’t coming pouring in from all directions. In my opinion, Tito now moves into high-profile gatekeeper role for up-and-coming fighters. While Tito deserves to land in the UFC Hall-of-Fame, it is unfortunate that his squabbles with Dana White will most likely keep him out.
  • Fight of the night bonuses went to Wanderlei Silva for KO of the night, Rousimar Palhares for Submission of the night, and Wilson Gouveia and Goran Reljic for Fight of the Night. All four fighters were awarded a $75,000 bonus prize.
  • Look for Jon Koppenhaver, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Ivan Salaverry all to be included in the next round of UFC roster cuts

part 1 of the presser:
http://videos.mmaweekly.com/view_player.php?id=2550
it sheds a little light on Tito and the UFC, you can also link to parts 2-4 from the first part.

Thanks for the link RJ, im still trying to watch part 2, site is so busy and it keeps freezing up.. im thinking to just watch it later.. but there are definately some good issues discussed.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 6 months ago

yeah man i noticed that too, iwas having a real hard time watching them. i started the video, paused it and went outside and played with the kids for a bit so i could watch it uninterrupted and it was still bogged down in some parts. im assuming its because of the volume of traffic on the site, so its probably a good idea to check it later.

ya thats what i did basically, took a while but i finally got through all 4 parts.

Dana is such a *** man.. when they asked, did you tell Tito he wasnt allowed to come to the presser? and hes like nope, i never talked to Tito. LOL when you bar the guy from the conference it doesnt matter if YOU told him yourself.. sigh.. that kind of dissembling of words is the same as lying to me.

Then he said oh ya, Tito was welcome.. thats complete BS man..

Hes always saying how he has no animosty for Tito and he hopes he goes and makes a million bucks and becomes a big star, blah blah.. Then the very next sentence hes talking sht about Tito again.. lol

I think Dana is an idiot, i mean, we all know how Tito is and the crap that comes out of his mouth. All Dana has to do is ignore him and try to be just a LITTLE BIT professional? Tito i expect to talk sht, i mean the guys a fighter, Dana is supposed to be a business man..

Its really pathetic that he cant hold his tongue and let Tito say whatever he wants.. who really cares what Tito says?

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 6 months ago

yeah i thought it was a bit funny too about the presser thing, Dana claimed he didnt try to keep Tito out but the security people tried to shoo Tito out the side door lol im sure Dana had nothing to do with that one.

umm.. any of you guys see celebrity rehab? i just saw it for the first time today, im sure it probably old news, but for those of you like me who are in limbo when it comes to shows like this, it kind of shocked me!

Ricco Rodriguez is on the show, though i dont know what hes addicted to, from what i know about his past, the only thing i could think of is twinkies hehe. But apparantly its serious and he actually tried to auction off his UFC belt on EBAY! lol, wtf is going on with Ricco..

oh ya, and theres a bunch of other lame celebs who dont interest me..

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

was it the one where Rico tells the story about him crashing his car and moving his KOed girlfriend (who he thought might be dead) from the passenger seat to the driver seat and got the hell out of there so not to get busted? and if im not mistaken he was hooked on coke and booze.

Comment by bvrasp about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

coke and booze? they dont really mix.. lol. Im thinking booze maybe? cuz coke stays in your system for looong man, and if you do so much coke that your an addict, for sure thats coming up in tests. Ricco fought recently didnt he? anyways, im just speculating, i have no idea whats up with Ricco.. hope he can work it out tho..

im not sure if anyone else has noticed but it seems like Shawn Tompkins is cornering one of the fighters in every second fight anymore. Joe Rogan used to make a big deal about Shawn till they started beefing and now he never really even says his name, so with Joe not pointing it out you dont notice as much but hes there. last night he cornered Goran Reljic and Wanderlei Silva, Shawn is popping up all over the place lately including the corners of Kendall Grove, Dan Henderson, and Chris Horodecki. Tompkins’ is also a full time Muay Thai coach at Xtream Couture and works with just about every fighter that goes through there. i guess im just trying to get some props for my boy because you ask people around the business about him and they’ll tell you hes great at what he does but the average fan knows his name but thats about it.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

Comment by bvrasp about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

ok i need your opinion guys, ive been all over the net reading forums and such and everyone is talking about the same thing. 50% of the people are talking about how great Machida is and 50% of the people are saying they hate him and his style. do you like Machida? do you like watching him fight? how do you feel about his elusive style? im dead on the fence for this one, i do find his fights a bit boring but i gotta respect his winning gameplans. anyway let me know how you feel about Lyoto and his style.

Comment by bvrasp about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

Ya i noticed the same thing RJ, personally i think its great. This is supposed to be Martial arts right? last time i checked, martial artists dont stand toe to toe trading punches. I realize it might not be the most exciting thing in every fight, but sometimes that style can be VERY exciting if he connects cleanly.

What do people expect from Machida? to pull a Frye vs Takayama? lol the guys a martial artist, not a brawler.

Funniest thing i read was people comparing Machida to Starnes, LOL ridiculous! how can he be compared to Starnes when he WON the fight VERY decisively, theres no doubt in anyones mind, he picked Tito apart the entire fight.

So yes it can be boring sometimes like every other style out there, but i like Machida, i like his style, i like his mentality about fighting.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

my big complaint about Lyoto is that he doesnt take ALL openings. he has chances to land clean bombs almost every time he dodges a strike but rarely takes advantage. i know how Machida thinks, hes a percentage guy he doesnt throw unless he has a high % chance of landing and that style is ok but you cant over think it because you never end up engaging in those moment when you could finish the fight. i said to my brother-in-law half way through the first round that if Machida put a big heavy knee right up the gut he would damn near kill Tito with it (i could see it a mile away Tito was covering his head like he always does and leaning all while leaving his mid section wide open) Machida didnt take advantage of that till late in the third round, and he almost finished it. it almost seems like Lyoto doesnt have very good ring sense and doesnt see these BIG openings to exploit, i would hope thats not the case and he just being safe and using these holes only when he needs to.

Ya thats true, but theres alot of factors, especially thats hes in the UFC now, hes got a perfect record and he does NOT want to lose. Ya he was too defensive in the fight with Tito, it would be a great statement for him to turn up the heat on Tito, but theres alot of risk in that. Titos still a dangerous guy and im sure Machida didnt want to give up a takedown. Not that he cant handle himself on the ground, but on the feet, though Tito has some boxing skill, Machida totally outclasses him.

I would definately like to see Machida more aggressive, but it takes time to get comfortable. Especially with the pressure of big name fights and the HUGE amount of money difference for winning or losing the fight.

It may have been a tiny bit boring, but Machida just got bumped up on the money list, you can believe that! hehe

Machida is probably my favorite fighter at 205. Seriously, the onyl fighter I might like more would be Rampage. His style is frustrating to the opponents. It’s amazing to see how truly confused they get the longer the match goes on. I was actually expecting to see Tito break down and cry between rounds. Machida shuts down gameplans, and makes good fighter look like chumps. Anyone who disparages that truly does not understand what it is they are watching. I will say this, the UFC will need to be careful who they put against Machida. They put him against another defensive fighter and we’ll be in for a snoozefest. If Tito himself had not be so tentative, the fighter would have likely ended much sooner.

during the fight i had the same arugument about machida being compared to starnes,i for some reason like to see the way machida fustrates his opponents gets them to come at him angry then capitolize its pertty amazing.

Comment by bvrasp about 5 months, 4 weeks ago

exactly Richard, theres no comparison to Starnes. Kalib was trying not to get hurt, Machida was countering and moving with a purpose.

the evidence is all over Titos face.. mostly his eye though..

watch the sneaky little hand shake from Aleks.

I think they’ve fought twice…the outcome was the same both times I believe.
