WEC: Faber vs Pulver Recap

June 2nd, 2008 | by Dr J

  • I give a lot of credit to Jens Pulver for an excellent showing against WEC Featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Before the fight, I thought Faber would need a quick first round KO if he had any chance of defeating Faber. While Jens did end up losing the fight, he gave Urijah a war for a full 25 minutes. A few times it appeared Jens close to being KO’d but he somehow managed to stay in the fight and return fire to Faber. I give Pulver a lot of respect and even more respect goes to Faber for a superb showing against a very game opponent.
  • Every time I watch the lighter weightclass fighters fight, I get excited because of their seemingly endless supply of energy. Miguel Torres and Yoshiro Maeda put on a very entertaining fight that was non-stop action. Torres continues to impress me more each time I see him fight, and I was glad to see him stand up to some punishment and stick with his gameplan. A good win for Torres who will be tough to beat in the bantamweight division.
  • Chuck Grigsby reminds me so much of UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo. They have nearly the same build and look, and seem to posses the same skill set. While Grigsby’s standup isn’t as good as Kongo’s, his lack of ground-game skill is identical. Mark Munoz knew that his strength against the larger striker would lie in the gorund game and he worked a solid gameplan to keep the fight on the mat. A nice ground-and-pound KO for Munoz.
  • The Rob McCullough vs Kenneth Alexander fight was a very close fight. Personally, I though Alexander won the final two rounds and should have won the decision victory. “Razor Rob” doesn’t seem as explosive as he used to be and, while he fought a good fight tonight, he seems to have lost his edge. A strong, solid showing by Alexander who I would love to see fight again.

Wow, Doc. No comment about Yoshiro’s eye in the Torres fight? That was brutal

I was pulling for Jens the whoel time, he is a real class act…but I really don’t like watching a 33 year old legend get brutalized like that. I’m sure he has a broken right eye socket at the very least.

Hey Doc,

Are you still able to get access to post-fight medical records…it’s a bit sick, but I actually get interested finding out what injuries a fighter suffered and try to find the point in the fight where it happened.

who is left for faber to fight? wasn’t that 13 wins straight for him? what are some options for him? maybe switch weight classes… it would be interesting to see a sherk/faber fight or stevenson/faber… which right now isnt plausible since both are in the UFC… and different weight classes

Fabers small, but it looks to me like he can handle himself against a bigger fighter.

As people know i dont often watch WEC, now that Faber beat Pulver, is he gonna go back to fighting guys he can roll over in the first round? lets just say i wont be tuning in to see that…

Hes gotta do something man.. look at BJ, even with all the talent hes yet to face at 155, he still wants to fight GSP. He wants the big NAME and big MONEY fights, thats what its about man.

Faber could win another 20 straight against nobodys and it wouldnt mean much to me. But if he fought BJ and lost i would have more respect for him and he probably make more money in that 1 fight than if he fought 20 cans.

Am i alone in this guys????

where would Anderson Silva be right now if he just kept beating up guys at KOTC?

Faber got too much talent to stay in WEC man.. look at Huerta too, he knows wats up man..

i’ll tell ya this if Faber move on and up and goes on to beat someone like Florian, Huerta, or Stevenson i would be very impressed. Faber is a really little dude, Pulver was visibly bigger then Uriah and Penn is even bigger then Pulver so right off the hop hes at a disadvantage. putting Faber in with a light weight with no ground game what-so-ever would even the playing field a bit, but who in MMA does that describe anymore? i dunno i would like to see him test him self as a fighter but i have this feeling that if he moves up and goes to the UFC people will be like “this is Faber? hes not that good.”

Why should Faber be asked to move up in order to compete? He’s very small and actually cuts very little if any to make 145. He could easily make 135. If he moves anywhere it’ll be down. A match up with him and Torres could draw some interest. The WEC/UFC needs to do a better job in getting some of the international bantam/feather weights over here. I would love to see someone like aoki, or kid come over and fight Faber.

as it stands right now Maxx, the talent is at 155, there are alot of guys at 155 who could probably make 145, but why? whos at 145? dam man, the guys 5′6.. ok thats not unheard of for a 155er, Sherks 5′6, Joe Daddys 5′6, Jens is 5′7, spencer fishers 5′7, Gomis 5′8, etc..

maybe its time to hit the weights and develop some power to go with that incredible speed, seriously, with the kind of shots he was landing on Jens, he should have got the KO. Yes Jens has a great chin, but landing a crisp haymaker right on the button should end the fight, if not, your lacking in power man. If Jens landed a shot that big on Faber, or anyone in the game, he was going to sleep.

you think the top guys should cut weight and come to the smaller show to fight Faber? obviously not..

Fabers gotta move up man, are you really that thrilled to see Faber beating up D level fighters? like i said, even if he loses against tougher guys he will get more respect, make more money, etc..
