Thiago Alves Misses Weight

June 6th, 2008 | by Dr J

The UFC held their official weigh-ins earlier today in London, England for tomorrow’s UFC 85: Bedlam event. All fighters made weight except for Thiago Alves who weighed in at 174 lbs, three pounds over the acceptable limit of 171 lbs. for the welterweight division.

Matt Hughes and Alves will still fight at a catch-weight of 174 lbs. Since the event is not sanctioned by any US athletic commission, it is unknown whether or not any portion of Alves’ fight purse will go to his opponent.

its Thiago Alves Patrick, not Thiago Silva, but im surprised to see him miss weight.. wow. He had definately had this problem before, even using banned substances to help him cut weight, but at this level, theres no excuse for that. Maybe he needs someone on his team that can help him with that since it seems to be a recurring problem for Alves.

Although from what ive read, the UK doesnt perform drug testing so he could have went back to the “juicing” but he obviously didnt, or he would have made weight.

you guys are missing some pretty good fights. Bisping vs. Day just ended and it was a good fight. the Davis vs. Swick and Leites vs. Marquardt were both entertaining. and lastly referee Dan Miragliotta is in some serious need of a stern talking to, one more questionable stoppage and someones going to end up stabbing him in the parking a lot after a show. i will be back after the p.p.v is over and give you all a run down of the show.

well UFC 85 is in the books and it was a decent set of fights. the show opened with Werdum vs. Vera and this was one the fight i was looking forward to, and it didnt disappoint… that is until Dan Miragliotta had to get involved, with 20 seconds left in the first round Werdum mounts Vera and starts raining down punches and while Vera was not improving his position he was also not take a lot of abuse ether yet Miragliotta found the need to stop the fight.

next up is Marquardt vs. Leites and all im going to say about this one other then it was a good back and forth fight is that Marquardt needs to learn that when he gets warned about something that he should clean it right up from that point on. if Marquardt didnt lose 2 points in that fight he would have won, but he seem like he wasnt interested in playing by the rules he even gave Leites a pile driver (illegal move) after he had been deducted a point two other times.

they showed Luis Arthur Cane vs. Jason Lambert, one of the undercard bouts. hey Jason remember the Gouveia fight? maybe this time you should keep your hands up and no swing wild…. oh to late never mind, im starting to think Lambert likes being KOed.

Mike Swick has found his groove at 170lbs. there were some good moments for Davis but Swick was in control for the most part, with Swick losing a point in the 3rd round all judges call the fight 29-27 Swick and i fully agree.

much like his last fight Bisping didnt give Day much of a chance to get anything started it was pretty much a one sided beat down. Bisping scores a TKO in round one.

on to our main event this fight went very close to the way i though it would, i had Alves pick to win late in round one by TKO and the the fight ended in just one minute and two seconds in the second round so my prediction wasnt that far off. at the end of the fight Joe Rogan asked Matt Hughes whats next for him and Hughes more or less said he has one fight left in him and that Matt Serra needs to start making a game plan now. i think Hughes has shown without a doubt now that he is yesterday great champion and its time for him to step down and let the light shine on the new breed of great welterweights.

Vera vs Werdum: yup Dan does it again, i agree RJ, it was a premature stoppage, just because the guy is throws 10 unanswered shots does mean you automatically stop it. Maybe 3 shots got through, did he expect Vera to start punching back from his back to show hes still in the fight? thats pretty stupid, why let down your guard just to make the ref happy. You will notice that Vera was shucking his hips and trying to maneuver but when you got Werdum on top of you its hard to do ANYTHING. Hope we get to see a rematch sometime soon..

Marquardt vs Leites: you pretty much covered it all RJ hehe, i agree that Nate cost himself this fight, he was warned but he didnt clean it up. Though it was still an exciting fight, you never knew what would happen and it felt like either guy could have ended it at any time.

Swick vs Davis: good fight, slow at times, but it was a war and when Swick lost that point he went nuts man lol.

HUGHES vs ALVES: again i have to agree with RJ, as sad as it is, Hughes is done guys. The most notable things i noticed were that he didnt mix up his takedowns with some striking. Even if your not a great striker, you could land a hard hook and hurt the guy or atlesat just to eep him guessing. When you say im gonna take you down, get ready here it comes, it makes it a HELL of alot easier to stuff it. The whole fight thats all Matt did.. sigh, i was very disappointed. Not only did his takedowns suffer, but the shoots also ultimately led to him getting KO in the fight because Thiago caught him with atleast 3 knees on the way in. To Thiagos credit he also did a GREAT job in defending when he was under Hughes, especially when Matt had him in side control, Matt loves side control but he couldnt do anything with it against Alves.

hopefully Matt will hang it up after his next fight with Serra win or lose and be inducted into the UFC hall of fame.

yessir at this point i just wanna see Hughes finish his little grudge with Serra and slide gracefully into retirement and the hall of fame. so what did you think of the Bisping fight? i would like to see him step up to some better middle weights now, i say give him the winner of Cote vs. Almeida with the winner of that meeting Anderson down the road after Okami or Liddell or both.

Why all the hype with Bisping? Is he going to fight someone descent? His only descent competitors were Evans who beat him and I thought he lost his fight to Hammel (who’s a fantastic wrestler, but a ways from becomming a true MMA fighter). It seems the UFC is using him as their European (English) connection to help draw fans in the UK and Europe and help increase the popularity of the sport there.

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 2 months, 2 weeks ago

i think you partly answered your question, the UK connection is obviously one of the major reasons the UFC pushing him. in his defense he did look very good in his last two bouts where he showed hes not going to get beat by mid card fighters. i think Bisping can beat a majority of the middle weight in the UFC but i cant see him going toe to toe with Anderson anytime soon. on a side note, the commercial for UFC 86 says that the Cote vs. Almeida fight will be for a shot at the title. while i dont think Cote would beat Anderson it would be cool to see my boy in the main event fighting for the title, so i’ll keep my fingers crossed in hopes that Cote can pull it off and then put on a good show with Silva.
