EliteXC: Return of the King Recap

June 15th, 2008 | by Dr J
EliteXC: Return of the King
  • KJ Noons showed me a different level of intensity than I have ever seen from him before. Yves Edwards is, of course, a veteran MMA fighter and very well-rounded and I anticipated this fight making it to at least the third round. Noons showed his boxing prowess and landed an excellent right hand to Yves’ chin that sent Edwards stumbling backward. At that point, Noons became a man possessed and completely overwhelmed Edwards with a barrage of elbow strikes and punches. Very impressive showing by the EliteXC Lightweight Champion.
  • Nick Diaz put together another very solid performance defeating Muhsin Corbbrey late in the third round. Overall, I didn’t think this was one of Diaz’s best performances but he was once again sharp with his striking and effective on the ground. Corbbrey has some excellent movement and hand speed and I’d love to see him fight again.
  • If it weren’t Noon’s blitzkrieg, Murilo Rua would have had the most dominating performance of the night. For all his bravado and cursing in the pre-fight staredown, Tony Bonello got completely worked over by “Ninja” Rua and is lucky he didn’t walk away from the fight with a jaw broken in several places.
  • Remember back when Sean Salmon threw that front snap kick in his fight against Rashad Evans? Yeah, we Dave Herman threw a jumping roundhouse kick last night against Ron Waterman. The only difference was that Herman’s kick landed flush to Waterman’s face and was one of the coolest kicks I’ve seen in a while.
  • You could tell by watching Rafael Feijao fight that he trains with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva Feijao has the same type of frantic activity to his clinch game that Silva has and his win over Wayne Cole was fun to watch.
  • Why anyone would let both Nick and Nate Diaz into the cage to “challenge” KJ Noons to a rematch after his victory is beyond me. Hyping a rematch fight is one thing, but what the Diaz boys do is different. Most fighters come into the cage and show a little respect but still give that “edgy” attitude and play for the cameras. The Diaz’s come into the cage and are not playing for the camera’s - they are dead serious and would have loved to have the rematch right then and there. KJ Noon’s father apparently has never seen or heard of the Diaz’s before and decided that getting into a verbal sparring match with Nate was a good idea. The scuffle that took place afterwards was highly amusing.
  • If Nick Diaz doesn’t learn some better striking defense, I think Noons will beat him again in their rematch.
  • I still HATE Bill Goldberg with a passion.

i really did enjoy the Diaz fight, and i was just waiting for him to start gushing blood (apparently the surgery worked) because he had no problem letting Corbbrey bomb on him at any opening he found. KJ Noons is a wild man and showed some awesome killer instinct, when Edwards hit the ground KJ didnt even allow the option to cover up, Edwards could have been wearing a helmet and it wouldnt have mattered at all Noons was not going to let Yves breath for a second. on a side note Dream 4… Aoki gets a gogo from mount? are you kidding me? is there nothing the rainbow panted warrior cant do?

Great night of fights guys, Ninja got it done very nicely, great to see him back in the W column.

Diaz won, but i have to say his conditioning was very poor, i think his level has gone down since leaving the UFC, win or lose he looks to be fading away as a fighter without facing top level competitors.

haha ya, that jumping switch kick was pretty nice to look at, thing is most of the time guys try stuff like that, they probably dont expect it to work so they dont use alot of power.

Yves got caught with an uppercut on the way in, sucks when that happens, when you get rocked within the first 30 sec of the fight, chances are, the guys gonna finish you. Yves couldnt get guard or mount any kind of defense because Noons was still very fresh, strong and fast which showed in his GnP.

The antics after the fight were funny, gotta hand it to Nick, he might be a jerk, but he won his fight and he created hype for another fight with Noons, in effect he assured himself a title shot. Pretty smart if you ask me, though his methods are questionable hehe.

Dream was very good too!

Manhoef made quick work of Saku, alot of people on the net though Saku might get killed in the ring in this fight, thats a bit much, but i agree that theyre abusing Saku a bit too much, time to quit while you can remember your name!

Overeem looked great, finally! great fighter with skill and talent but TERRIBLE luck in the fight game, nice to see him get the W.

Aoki dominated the whole fight, at one point he was in full mount and couldnt decide what to do. Bas mentioned that this is the time for GnP, Aoki threw a few punches to very little effect, then dropped to gogo on him lol. was a pretty good fight, though totally one sided.

MOUSASI vs YOON

First round was all Mousasi, he did some serious damage to Yoons taped up knee with leg kicks and he also controlled the ground game. I noticed that Mousasi had landed about 5-6 punches to the back of the head without any word from the ref.. hmm.. ok he seems fine, wait! 2 knees to the back of the head? thats not cool. Yoon had a great armbar attempt which Mousasi fought off expertly staying alive to the 2nd round.

The 2nd round of the fight was a gratuitous display of relentless punches to the back of Yoons head. Im thinking wtf is going on?? is this the twilight zone? then Bas mentions it aswell, ok so its not just me. You notice that when Aoki gets hit in the back of the head, the refs are all over it, even stopping the fight like vs JZ.

the amount of shots Yoon took to the back of the head was ridiculous, without even a WARNING to Mousasi.. who is this ref? does he know the rules? what a disgrace..

is it me or was anyone else kinda pissed at the way dave herman seems to think of fighting as a joke, the guy had an imperessive win but doesnt look to me like hes taking mma seriously.Nick diaz i love to see the guy fight but last night it was like the guy was in slow motion those punches really sucked that he was throwing i dont know i think noons is going to give him all he can handle and then some.

Diaz hits like hes trying to earn a 12 round decision, and thats fine if your wearing 10oz or 12oz gloves and your opponent isnt throwing haymakers back. Noons has good enough counters to put an end to Diaz’s night right quick. if your going to pick your opponent apart on the feet you better be able to strike and not get hit back, Diaz needs to stop thinking hes GSP and trying to work an all around game his boxing is awesome but his defense sucks bad. use your hand to get the take down and work your Jits, its not a tough concept just ask your little brother how to do it he seems to have a grip on things.

RJ did you see the Mousasi vs Yoon fight??

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 1 week ago

no i didnt get to see it yet i tried to get it online a few times but no luck. from your reaction to the fight it sounds like i need to see it. im starting to worry a bit about all the rules issues, late stops, early stops, rule breaking, unenforced rules, over enforced rules. there has been somewhat of a standard set and they need be way more consistent about following it. i feel sorry for the fighters because they dont know if the ref is going to give them a shot at working out of a bad spot or stop it right away, and the guys who try there best to not break the rules getting illegal thing done to them and the ref says nothing. the athletic commissions need to come together with the orgs, fighters, judges, and refs and set out the rules properly and enforce them properly so we can avoid the future sh*t storm thats going to happen when someone ends up crippled from being dropped on there head or someone ends up half blind for shots to the back of the head.

i just watched the Yoon vs. Mousasi fight and wow man, i was expecting some punches to the back of the head pitter-pat style and maybe a half blocked knee but wow that was just nuts. it seem like at the beginning of the fight the ref was more worried about Yoon grabbing the ropes then the heavy knees and punched Mousasi landed on the back of the head and neck of Yoon. that was almost hard to watch for someone like me who knows how that feel and effects you. like i said before they need to call a meeting and address this issue NOW. on another note, i am done watching Saku fight. dont get me wrong i love Kazushi Sakuraba, and that why i dont want to see him fight again. PLEASE Sak, PLEASE stop now! i dont want to see him get his asss kicked anymore, ive had enough, i know he is a true warrior he has nothing to prove to his fans anymore. i swear if you told him he was going fight 22 black bears one by one he would say “ok, but can i tape up my f*cked up knees” and even if they said no he would still do it, and promoters know that and totally take advantage of it.

see what i mean RJ? i wasnt exaggerating when i said there was like 30 illegal blows, and all that without even a warning.

Ofcourse i agree 100% about Saku.. its painful just to watch, let alone what it must be like for him to absord all that punishment. I would definately agree to the senior matchups, Saku vs Royce again, or Tamura again..

Comment by bvrasp about 5 months, 1 week ago

did you watch it yet doc?

Comment by Dr J about 5 months ago

yeah, i watched it.

it definitely was surprising nothing was called, especially after the way that the first JZ-Aoki fight ended because of a non-back of the head strike

Comment by R.J. St.Croix about 5 months, 1 week ago

from what i gathered is they want Wand to fight Brandon Vera. its funny some fighters get all the breaks and dont fight a whole lot of top guys, but Wanderlei they throw in with Chuck Liddell (who a lot of people thought could KO Wand) and Keith Jardine (the guy who beat Liddell) now there is talks of Wand fighting a good HEAVYWEIGHT striker. jeez i wonder why people love this warrior.

Comment by MMAKansas about 5 months, 1 week ago

WHAT? Are they trying to throw my boy under a bus or what?!… no more of that 5ft 11 guy fights the 6ft HW freak! Geesh… they threw him in with Cro Cop and now Vera!?

I think Wand would knock him out, which is probably what they want.. a short LHW to knock Brandon out so they have a reason for not re-upping his contract…

f*ck em Kansas, win or lose Wanderlei will always be a hero and down the road the people who dont get it now will be saying “wow how did i not love this guy when he was still fighting” for now we can just enjoy what he is while the haters call him washed up for putting up a hell of a fight against bigger guys and losing. and by the way i dont see him losing to Vera, i dont see anyone thing that Vera does better the Wand.

Comment by MMAKansas about 5 months, 1 week ago

Guess I gotta agree… good news I hear that Wand said no.. not enough prep time and every fight counts right now… every win needed so he told em’ nope… good for him..
