- Carlos Condit continued his WEC dominance last night against Hiromitsu Miura. Definitely the toughest fight Condit has been in for a while and he was clearly tired after the first round ended. Miura put up an excellent fight and had some excellent takedown throws but Condit weathered his barrage played to his own strengths. It was nice to see Condit in a long battle and fight someone who really tested him both on the feet and the ground. I know Condit is really trying to push hard to get himself moved from the WEC over to the UFC but I really don’t think thats the best thing for him. In the WEC he’s top dog; in the UFC welterweight division he’s a middle of the pack fighter. Sure, you never get better unless you challenge yourself against tougher opponents, but I can’t honestly believe Condit really thinks he can hang with the cream of the crop in the UFC.
- I don’t know why exactly, but I’m pretty glad that Brian Stann’s winning streak is over. Stann’s ego and thoughts of invincibility were getting obnoxious and it was good to see Steve Cantwell get his revenge and win the WEC light heavyweight title.
- Jamie Varner had another solid fight in his match against Marcus Hicks. Hicks took a lot of shots to the head and managed to stay standing a lot longer than he probably should have.
- One of the guys I’m most impressed with in the WEC is Brock Larson. This guy has a 23-2 record and his only losses are to Jon Fitch and Carlos Condit. He rolled through Carlo Prater as he has most of his other opponents and I think he will be the guy to end Condit’s reign as WEC welterweight champion. Of course, I said that last time they fought and Condit caught him in an armbar.
- Herb Dean managed to end another fight prematurely. I’m sure Micah Miller was going to lose that fight anyways, but Dean’s new nickname has to become “Another one bites the dust.”
- One thing that got me excited was all those commercials for the Contender: Muay Thai show. I had no idea they were doing a Muay Thai so and I’m looking forward to catching a episodes.
- Watching the fights last night, its amazing how great the difference in talent level is between the UFC and WEC. If anyone thinks that Brian Stann, Steve Cantwell, of any of the other fighters would last a full round in the UFC they are sorely mistaken. Carlos Condit and Brock Larson are the only two fighters who could survive; in fact, Larson already has a UFC victory.
everyone watching the fight with me was incredibly impressed by Muira, heres what i noticed. Muira has ZERO takedown defense, what he did display was a legitimate talent for sweeping from the bottom. I dont know how amazing Muira might be, or if it was just a weakness in Condits game, im thinking a bit of both. In terms of Stamina, they were both gassed by the 2nd round, so they seemed about even there in my opinion.
Most people also thought it was an early stoppage, i agree, Muira wasnt really in trouble and he worked so hard in that fight, he should have been allowed to continue. Ofcourse it wasnt much of a controversy because Condit was already ahead on points and he would have won the decision anyways.
