GracieFighter.com was the first to report that ProElite, parent company to EliteXC, was going out of business:
We are confirming that EliteXC has folded. What this means for our fans and supporters is that there will not be a Nick Diaz vs. Eddie Alvarez fight on November 8th. However Jake Shields in the UFC has now become a real possibility. We will be updating our site for future developments.
According to reports from multiple sources, ProElite employees have already been told the company will cease operations by the end of the week and many employees have already been let go by the company.
Through two years of existence, ProElite incurred roughly $55 million dollars in debt through holding events and purchasing other promotions like Cage Rage, ICON Sport, and King of the Cage.
Apparently, talks with Showtime and/or CBS about a possible acquisition fell threw late last week. Reports are suggesting that the recent “stand-up” scandal surrounding the Kimbo Slice vs Seth Petruzelli match halted most of the talks.
In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, T.J. Thompson gave quite a bit of insider information about the ProElite operations. Thompson was the original founder of the ICON Sport promotion in Hawaii and sold the company to ProElite in August of 2007.
“I was there cageside and watched the whole thing happen,” he said. “I think (CBS) got cold feet watching. The way the Ken Shamrock pullout was handled, all the way from the beginning to the end with Seth Petruzelli. Watching Jared Shaw jumping up and down and screaming as a representative of the company, I think was disgusting and embarrassing.”
“I don’t have a smoking gun, (but) I’ve been around long enough, I’ve talked to enough people that were there, I won’t name names of executives in the company that I know—Seth was paid to stand up. I’m confident of that. If the commission wants to talk to me, I’ll tell them what I know.”
Sam Caplan is also now citing sources that make additional claims regarding the Petruzelli-Slice fight:
…separate sources informed Five Ounces of Pain last week that there was also a possibility that a deal had been struck preventing Petruzelli from using “Thai-style kicks on Slice, since he had not prepared for them leading up to the fight.”
Caplan also had this little nugget regarding the Ken Shamrock situation:
We also know that CBS execs were none too pleased with the whole situation that led to Petruzelli being promoted to the main event in the first place. As confirmed in the Oct. 20 print edition of the Wrestling Observer, veteran MMA reporter Dave Meltzer confirms that Ken Shamrock became angry the day before the fight upon learning just how much more Slice was scheduled to be paid than him. Feeling disrespected, it is believed that his representatives began to hold out for more money on Friday. They were denied but renewed their request on Saturday morning. Hours later, they were informed that Shamrock had been cut and was unlikely to be able to compete.
The timing of everything raised a lot of eyebrows, but the Observer indicates that Shamrock was so angry that he needed to blow off some steam and decided to roll on Saturday morning. Some public speculation after the event centered around the possibility that based on his pro wrestling background, Shamrock may cut himself intentionally. Meltzer all but rules out there possibility, suggesting that Shamrock needed the payoff he was scheduled to make for the fight and as upset as he may have been, was in no position to walk away having earned no money for the fight. The fact is that Shamrock had a large contingent of his family in attendance at the event and that he may have actually lost money on the fight when you factor in the costs of a training camp as well as travel expenses.
However, the question remains as to why Shamrock chose to go to the hospital as opposed to having a cutman apply pressure to stop the bleeding, then apply super-glue to the cut to close the wound, and then apply makeup to give Shamrock a chance to make it through the pre-fight examination at the arena. While the cut would have opened up easily if he took a shot to the area, the bottom line is that Shamrock would have still be guaranteed his scheduled six-figure payday once he had passed the pre-fight medical.
Reports are now quickly circulating that CBS may replace EliteXC with Affliction for their Saturday Night Fights events.
What this means for fighter currently under EliteXC contract is not known at this moment. Fighters like Robbie Lawler, Brett Rogers, Antonio Silva, Eddie Alvarez, Rafael Feijao and Jake Shields would make excellent additions to the UFC roster. For all the female fighters like Gina Carano they will have to search elsewhere to ply their skills.

aww man that sucks. but on the bright side less promotions means more fighters, fighting in one promotion and we get to see better fights. i dont like the idea that PRIDE is gone but me may have never gotten to see fights like Liddell vs. Silva and Sylvia vs. Fedor if PRIDE was still around.
Ya this really does suck, though RJ makes a good point about “the bright side”, theres a much bigger downside to this also. We are getting less MMA events because of this. Though Elite kind of jumped the shark putting all their eggs in one basket with Kimbo, they put on some very good event the past 2 years.
Hopefully we still have strikeforce to help fill up some of those weekends between UFC events. Dream is apparantly almost bankrupt and WVR is simply lacking a decent amount of big name fighters. Oh ya, then theres Affliction lol, that company is a ticking time bomb and i doubt they will survive past 2009.

im not totally opposed to waiting a bit longer between fight cards as long as we getting something in return such as bigger fights or more fights. it would be cool if the UFC showed 8 or 9 fights during a p.p.v. instead of 4 or 5 and with no competition they can spend less time telling us how awesome they are. then again i do like those times when we 3 or 4 events in a month and i dont see that happening very often is it was just the UFC as far as big promotions go.

i dont get into political debates to often because much like BV, Richard, and Patrick i could give a f*ck who the “face” of the country is. the way i see it is a good majority of the middle to lower class (income wise i mean) are jaded by the government and there way of doing things, and the common idea is that “nothing ever changes” and the reason they feel that way is because its true for the most part. the people who get to see the changes are the big money movers, the rich, the powerful, the high rollers and they have all but forgot about the little guy, the guys who really keep the economic machine moving and in turn the little guy forgot about the government. if you dont own a business or real estate or have some other means of earning way more money then the average man the only real changes you see from year to year is taxes increasing, medical costs increasing, gas prices increasing, school funds being cut, child care funds being cut, ect and so on, none of these thing help a person like me with a household income of less the 40K and 4 kids and to adults living in the household. when and if a political party comes along that will do things to help me that who will get my vote, in the past i have voted NDP for my local government based on them wanting to keep laws in place not allowing scab labor, thus making it possible for me and my union to negotiate a better contract for me and not have the fear of having my employer hire cheap day laborers to do my job instead of giving me the pat on the back that i deserve. so anyways thats my rant on politics lol.
I understand RJ, but if big businesses don’t exist then where do lower income jobs come from? We lower income folks need our jobs, and they are coming from big companies. Our country the USA has the 2nd largest corp. tax rate IN THE WORLD at 35%, that’s why jobs are going to INDIA. If one party promises to tax the big boys, and spread it around, those companies either shut down or move overseas. Spreading it doesn’t work, it only hurts us worse, because then we are unemployed.
Everyone is saying that trickle down economics doesn’t work, but it does, if it didn’t work, nobody would be worried about how all the big companies and banks in NY are doing, but it does TRICKLE DOWN to the little guy eventually in the form of job losses.

Anderson would be well advised to take it to the ground, not that he cant KO Cote easily, but why bother risking it? on the ground Cote has EVEN LESS of a chance of pulling something out his ***. He showed some great BJJ defense against Almeida, but although hes got world class BJJ Almeida wasnt quite ready to jump back into MMA after such a long layoff against a game opponent like Cote, was just too soon.
It should be interesting to see what happens tonight, but i feel bad for Mcfedries and Griffin, they fed my boys to the wolves with some really bad matchups.. im 90% sure Drew is getting submitted in the 1st and Tyson will lose by decision.
