how do you gauge what size you should order?

Good question
Use a cloth measuring tape and measure around the circumference of your knuckles. If you'll be wrapping your hands, measure with the wrapping done.
Small = 6" - 7"
Medium = 7" - 8"
Large = 8" - 9"
XL = 9" - 10"

These are great gloves, I have two pairs ( to keep the funk away) and they take six plus hours of beating a week. They have held of great. I paid way more for them elsewhere.
