The big news today is that the Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva fight that was tentatively scheduled for UFC 65 in November, may not happen. The Calgary Sun online is reporting that:
It appears the much-anticipated mixed martial arts bout between rival champions Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva, scheduled for November, might be off.
“I don’t even know if Silva’s going to happen,” said Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He cited problems in dealing with the Japan-based Pride Fighting Championships that is home to Silva.
White said UFC 65 will instead probably feature Liddell against Tito Ortiz in a rematch of UFC 47 in 2004.
By Dana’s statement, it doesn’t appear the deal is completely dead, rather very unlikely. I always thought it was stupid to announce a fight this prematurely, especially when one of the parties (Chuck Liddell) had a very tough fight in between.
Also, if Dana White is say that UFC 65 will probably feature Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell instead, than is Tito still going to fight Ken Shamrock for the third time in October? I don’t see how Tito could or would even want to fight on October 10 if he is going to have the opportunity to rematch Liddell for the title in November.
Zach Arnold at FightOpinion.com gives his take on the situation.
** UPDATE **
It really does appear that this fight is off. As I’ve noted, the Canadian press has carried Dana White’s comments on how the negotiations aren’t going so well with Pride. Well, Pride has announced that Wanderlei Silva will appear on their October 21st card in Las Vegas. If Silva is fighting in October, there is pretty much no way he would then be fighting Chuck Liddell only one month later in November.

Man this is the most dissapointing news ever. I was so excited about this fight. They should have never announced it. Why get our hopes up like that. Now people will always wonder which organization ( pride or ufc ), has the best middleweight/light heavyweight fighter. I believe Silva would have beat Liddell, but we will never know. Man there must be a situation where both organizations can agree on.
daDude……
PS: Silva and Liddell should promote the fight themselves..LOL.
Oh the agony. Dana you goober. I can’t believe they’re back peddleing on the fight of the decade. I don’t care whose fault it is.. MAKE THIS FIGHT HAPPEN!!..*ahem*…sorry. But you know deep inside we all knew this was going to happen. There is just noway this fight was really going to go on….just too many factors to de-rail it.
I say it will still happen. Probably not in November but it will eventually. It reminds me of the feeling I had back in the day when we all thought Tito & Chuck would go down, Tito even saying in interviews he would fight Chuck. Just when it seemed it would never happen..it did.
Same thing here. I think it will happen eventually, the UFC (don’t blame just Dana here) jumped the gun a bit.
This is so sad, in my opinion, it’s UFC trying to protect their poster child. If UFC is worried about losing the title to a pride person and if Silva really just wants to fight Chuck they should make these guys go at it with no title involved but since Chuck isn’t going to put up his title I think the fight should be done with Pride rules so if it does come to it Silva can lay those signature stomps and we can see some hardcore fighting and not this heavily restricted stuff that we’re used to.
How EXTREMELY disappointing it will be if this fight does not happen. Tito vs Chuck will be comparatively boring and dull. Even though I am much more of a UFC fan than a PRIDE fan, I personally think Wand had/has a better best chance to mop up the octagon with Chuck than anyone else in MMA right now. Basically, I give Chuck a punchers chance over Wand given his extreme knockout power but I think Wand is a better overall fighter given his awesome Muy Thai. No matter what would have happened (or hopefully does happen) it would be be awesome to see. It had/has the potential to be one of the greatest MMA fights ever. I hope these greedy bastages can get over all their differences and give their loyal fans something to really look forward to!
I was so excited about fighting. My career is over now. ITs ********
THis really is a disappointment. A big interpromotional fight like Liddell Silva would have brought MMA to another plateu of popularity. Even though there is no way i see liddell losing the fight, the fight would have been very competetive. Liddell would have avoided th wild swings of wanderlei and pick him off from the outside and with devastating one punch power, even though wanderlei can recoup., i dont think it would be fast enough against a finisher like Chuck. I dont see liddell losing anytime in the near future.
I think it is funny when people that know nothing about the strategy of a fight start weighing in on how Wand would beat Chuck in a fight. Truth be told Chuck has the strongest chin pound for pound in any organization. This already puts him at an extreme advantage to any fighter he steps in the ring with. Secondly is that he has evolved more than any other fighter in a short amount of time. His punches are not just powerful, they are deadly accurate and his timing is incredible.
This is not accidental. He studies the fighters better than any other fighter I’ve seen in a long time. He knows where there weaknesses lie and he exploits those weaknesses. He frustrates grapplers and makes them swing wild on him, and in each case it’s just a matter of time before they get caught while punching through, and this is why they typically knockout so easy. Wand is a great fighter, but he is predictable. He likes to charge his opponents and this is bad if the opponent enjoys letting you corner them, as Liddell does. He makes fighters feel like he is in a bad position and then springs into action on them. Another important thing to take into account is Liddell’s training and how versatile of a fighter he really is. He does not show you everything he has. He uses his fists primarily, but he does have the ability to take a fight to the ground, and he also trains in Muy Thai as Silva does, he just doesn’t use it because he rarely has to. This makes it really diffcult for another fighter to study him and pinpoint weaknesses. I think it will eventually happen, but I hope people have the right expectations.
Last thing I have to say is that people are acting retarded about this belt thing. To be honest Chuck shouldn’t have to put his belt up, Wanderlei offered nothing and has proven nothing to get a title shot. There are guys in front of him that fight in the UFC and that is the way organized fighting is, you can’t just fight whoever whenever.
Also Chuck never made this gripe, I just hate seeing idiots throw in opinions about why they think this fight may not go down. It had nothing to do with just his belt, it has to do with UFC and Pride negotiations. Pride is becoming a sinking ship right now and they need a huge boost to bring on new sponsors. They have lost a contract to Fuji TV recently and this impacts their promotions dramatically. Read this: “Allegations began to spread about PRIDE’s top brass being involved with shady figures in the Japanese underworld. The press was bad and Fuji TV, due in large measure to its own set of unfortunate events, flipped the switch on PRIDE, removing anything from the ship it perceived as a drag. Adding insult to injury, for the first time in a long time a top-tier fighter, Quinton Jackson (Pictures), fled to another organization during his free agency period.” Because of this I’m sure that Dana White is skeptical of working with the Pride organization and if this does go down I’m sure he’s looking to get more out of it that what’s been stated.
There is no way that Silva can beat chuck. Chuck is going to beat Silva like he is his woman in some maximum security prison
Pride might have contract issues with their sponsors, but in no way is it a sinking ship. Pride has been and still is the number one fighting organization in the WORLD. Where was the UFC before Spike TV? The real fight fans know that Pride is number one, while the new fans are only exposed to the U.S. market UFC. Only one way to settle this..WAR!! Do you think Dana would take that chance? Do you think Dana’s champions would stand a chance against Pride’s champions? I can name a handfull of great fighters from Pride, while i can only hold up two fingers for UFC, Matt Hughes and Chuck Liddell i’m not even going to mention the two heavyweight slouches.
What does Wanderlei have to offer? How about the world’s best fighter status. This guy fights anybody in any weight classes, and is involve in a multifight tournament right now fighting one of the best heavyweights in the world, Mirko Cro-cop. When was the last time any of these UFC so called fighters ever fought anyone heavier than themselves. Chuck Liddell and Dana White wants nothing to do with Wanderlei, too much at stake for them to lose. Chuck can keep on making movies and walk around like he’s the man from beating up tomato cans the last 3 fights. Dana can keep on fooling these new fans with rip off pay per views like Ortiz vs. shamrock IIIIII, Hughes vs. Penn. It’s like three fighters fighting each other all the time. We’ll see if the UFC can keep ducking Pride when Pride comes to the U.S. because there’s only so far you can ride this image before what is real appears before you and you must face it. I can’t wait, ready for it now, ready for WAR!!
One last word, Mike Tyson would knock Chuck Liddell out cold, i’m talkin cold. Mike would then hold Dana by earpoint and force UFC to go to WAR!!
Check it out:
Silva has lost to Ortiz and Belfour (UFC) both of them lost brutally to Couture and Liddell, and Liddell put Couture to sleep! Silva also got destroyed by Arona.
I want to see Mauricio “Shogun” Rua fight either of these guys. Shogun against either of them (if his broken arm heals in time) I’ll go with Shogun, he’s a monster!!!
Liddell vs Silva….? I’m going with Liddell, too much hype about Silva, same can be said about Liddell yes, but lets look at their track records.
Since late 2002, Liddell has finished four fighters who most would consider viable top 10 light heavyweights: Couture, Overeem, Ortiz, and Sobral. He finished two capable but unranked fighters in White and Horn. He’s won and successfully defended UFC titles in that period of time, as well as pioneered finishing knockouts against Sobral, Horn, and Couture.
Despite the breadth of Silva’s PRIDE career, it’s worth noting that only three of his 24 opponents could arguably be called top-ranked light heavies: Jackson, Sakuraba, and Henderson. And while they sport impressive records, it needs to be noted that both Sakuraba and Henderson would have to eat several Chuck Liddell sponsored steaks to barely edge the 200-lb. mark.
That’s in sharp contrast to legitimate light heavies like Jackson, who cut between 10-20 pounds as a matter of course. Come fight night, Silva’s opponents could often be a disappointing 30 lbs. lighter than expected for this weight category.
Silva himself has opted for a similar weight disadvantage, battling both Mirko Filipovic and Mark Hunt in a draw and an irrelevant loss, respectively, and just got smacked down by Cro Cop yesterday!!
His record sports three significant losses: two to superior ground tacticians in Ricardo Arona and Tito Ortiz , and one blowout of a defeat to Vitor Belfort.
Dana’s hardly scared, I would think any core base fan of MMA is obviosly aware of PRIDE, as the Gracie’s went there when they became over the hill for UFC (yes,,, check it out, they did) and they are arguably the most famous pioneers of Brazilian Juditsu.
Anyway, this fight was too good to happen, it could be a strategy to hype up the press, controversy always is good advertising in the fight world, we might be being played for fools, (pretty smart if it’s true) Both organizations will come out smelling like roses for having the “commitment” to resolve the obstacles that hindered the fight,
wait and see….
Yes, DocDre, you’ve made the point I always make. I don’t want to take anything away from Silva, but he’s been beating up a bunch of little Japanese guys, aside from Jackson and just a few others. And everyone always cites Silva beating Jackson, while Jackson beat Liddell. So what, Liddell beat Vitor and Tito, each of whom beat Silva. That logic just doesn’t fly.
Also, Liddell has avenged 2 of his 3 loses already – one of them twice. The only loss he needs to avenge is Jackson. How many fighters can say that?
It could go either way – any fight can. I actually think it’s too even to call. It would be easy to go with my heart, talk a lot of noise and say Liddell would knock his @$$ out! But let’s say I was forced to bet my house on it…yikes! Too close to call for me. Too close to call.
But let’s just hope it happens before one of them gets whipped really bad……..oops, too late! :)
hey, my first time posting on this site, its nice to hear UFC fans and Pride fans both showing support for their favorite organizetions. I was a pride fan first and foremost, nobody puts on a show like pride, with the effects an the chick screaming heheh, definately better than UFC in that respect.
In terms of the fighting rules, people tend to think that UFC is alot more restrictive than pride, i wouldnt say thats the case. Some people may not know, but in pride your not allowed to drop elbows to the head on the ground, ala tito ortiz, loiseau, etc. This one strategy in itself is devastating, which some fighters build an entire career on. of course pride has the kicks an knees to the head on the ground, which i wish they kept in the UFC. Other than that, in UFC you have the cage which adds all kinds of elements to a fight, different skills and strategies come into play, i hate it when they stop the action to put fighters back in the center of the ring in pride.
In response to what some of you guys were discussing, I wouldnt say Pride is a sinking ship at all, but UFC has definately surpassed pride in certain ways. Firstly, there is a UFC even every month or so, where the pride events are much more sparse. With the help of Dana white, UFC has become a sport and not a spectacle anymore.. especially with the ultimate fighter shows, their fanbase has quadrupled. Dana has made some mistakes granted, im sure hes never done this before hehe, nobody has, with the help of spike he ressurected MMA in the US.
As far as talent, like ive always said, i was a pride fan first and foremost, silva has been my fav fighter for a looooong time! but, with a few exceptions, i think the better overall talent lies in the UFC, str8 goods. I mean, pride has Cro cop, who is one of the best fighters in the world! jus like fedor. Look at miletich by itself, their all but running the UFC, then you got team quest, all these guys live together and train together and do nothing but concentrate on fighting, i dont see that level of dedication in pride. UFC is the future my friends.
OH YA!
silva vs chuck
silvas my boy! i hope he wins! but if i was betting on that fight, my money would be on chuck..
besides who wins and who loses, i think it would have the possibility to be one of the best fights ever.
PS: one of the most underrated fighters, my boy, genki sudo!! if you dont know, check him out, k1, pancrase, abu dhabi
Nice, clear-headed thinking. You made great points about the elbows and about the cage. Much rather see a UFC fight because of the cage – but that chick screaming is great – I freakin love that!
Not to say that Sylvia or Orlovski or some other UFC heavy weight couldn’t beat Fedor, Minotauro or CroCop. Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn’t. Anything can happen. Man to man I wouldn’t say they’re any better.
But Pride has so many more tough heavy weights than just those 3 guys. I mean, I can’t stand the guy because he has no skill, but Bob Sapp?!? When he fights you know it’s going to be dangerous. Anyone see that fight with him and Kimo? Awesome! Even guys like Kevin Randleman: not really a top fighter, but he picked up Fedor and slammed him like a sack of potatoes. I thought he was going to break his neck. Fedor still kicked his ***. Anyway, heavy wieght division is Pride all the way.
I like UFC in all the other divisions. And I like the cage…this isn’t boxing.
heheh i hear you defender,
that bob sap vs kimo was nice heheh it was in k1 tho.
First, let me say that both Silva and Liddell are great fighters, but if I had to pick, I’d give the edge to Silva. He looks like a more complete fighter with a credible ground defense and a striking game that utilizes punches, kicks and knees. While the knock on him is that he has a tendency to swing wild, Chuck Liddell isn’t exactly Roy Jones Jr in there himself and has thrown his fair share of those looping hooks as well. Second, although some have made the argument that common opponents don’t matter, sorry, they do, but what you have to take into account is how recently the fight(s) occured. It’s significant to note that while Wanderlei’s “important losses” to Vitor Belfort and Tito Ortiz were six years ago, Chuck’s loss to Quentin Jackson came only three years ago and on the same night that Silva went on to punish Jackson to his face region with brutal knees. While tempting to say that Liddell softened up Jackson and paved the way for Silva’s win, Liddell looked really bad that night and hardly inflicted any damage at all to Jackson. Jackson did get a rematch with Silva and the result was one of the bloodiest knockouts I’ve ever seen in any combat sport, further detracting from the Liddell-softening theory. Another thing to consider is the differing rule sets of Pride and UFC. Which one is used in a Liddell vs. Silva matchup greatly affects the outcome. While most of Chuck’s game remains intact under either set, UFC greatly restricts Silva’s repertoire of “soccer kicks” and stomps to downed opponents. Regardless of who wins, however, the most important thing is that when this fight finally does happen, it’s going to be one of the best fights we’ve seen in a long time.
I can’t say who would win. But I do know this, both Chuck and Silva are two of my favorite and best fighters in MMA along with these other two killers, CroCop and Fedor.
UFC heavy weights: Sylvia and Orlovski wouldn’t stand a chance against Prides heavy weights: Fedor or CroCop. Just out of the question!
All I want to know is who would win the meeting between Chuck and Silva! ( IF IT EVER HAPPENS!) These two guys are just awsome fighters, and their own signature styles would be Great to watch head to head. Fast, wild, all out attack of Silva! Vs. accurate, knockout power shots of Chuck!
Oh, and by the way, if Belfort had to fight Silva again in Pride or UFC but even worse for Belfort if it were to be Pride rules Silva would get revenge! Belfort is a good fighter, but you can only get lucky once!
And for all you guys out there talking about Silva’s big loss as of late, NO ONE and again I say NO ONE could beat CroCop right now! ………………………………………………..Well, let me take that back. Fedor could beat him, but that is all. Chuck , Silva, Sylvia and Orlovski would not stand a chance! CroCop is just all that!
Everyone needs to realize that no one truely knows who would win this fight Silva VS. Chuck unless we see it with our own eyes! So someone just get this damn show on the road and make it happen already! And thanks alot Dana for the BIG build up and disapointment!
OK, here we go:
number 19 – Mirko CroCop fought silva at the semi’s of that tourney, and scortched his head with the left trade-marked high kick.
he then advanced to the finals to set his rampage mode on against Josh Barnett, causing him to tap out of panic.
btw, although the pride tournament was an open-weight one, Silva actually entered the semi’s out-weighing Mirko by 4 pounds!
amazing, isn’t it?
Stepping-up a category didn’t help Silva against the Croatian sansation! (and its just great, with all the bad blood those 2 guys have between them…)
CroCop is my personal favorite, I gotta be honest.
I am now downloading Mirko’s fight against Fedor, cause his few losses are the only times this MMA GOD looks a bit more humane.
Rua locked his arm, fine… I’m dying to see how Fedor had him!
I’ll respond more soon.
P.S. – Crocop has the best take-down defense and is the most fearsome striker of them all! Not Liddell, as Joe Rogan and his clowns having us believe… :)
A simple fact, which can only be proven wrong by matching Mirko and Chuck in a fight.
I suggest March 2007, anyone objects?
crocop is a god i understand but how come all u pride fans only talk bout your heavy weights being better, yes ufc has a bunch of jokers in there for the heavy weights, but look at our feather, welterweight , middleweight, and light heavyweight…….pride has a few huge fighters like silva n crocop n fedor, they just walk through all these nonamed chinks…..put anderson silva, franklin, hughes, st. peirre, penn, liddell, ortiz or half of the ufc againt those chinks n they would destroy them too… prides main event is always one sided silva or crocop killing some chink look at ufc main event and there always two amazing fighters kickin the **** out of each other….liddell beats silva when he catches him with one of his deadly pinpoit punches wen silva is trying some of his wild crazy **** he always does…u pride fans need to watch silvas fights in the ufc he got massacured…n belfort beat him n couldnt even last in the ufc so hes fighting no names chinks over in pride, every ****** ufc fighter goes over to pride, no pride fighters even wanna think about coming to the ufc
Pride is where the real money is – Thats why fighters won’t bother going to the States to fight for dimes and quarters…
I would really like to see Sakuraba getting his *** kicked on a dual-monthly basis in the Octagon. too bad it’ll only happen when pigs fly.
Makes me sad what has become of the UFC events… some fights are good, but most of them remind me of amatuer nights in my backyard.
Both the UFC and Pride competitors can take each other out on a given night. Too bad that the world will always look on the heavier weights, where the real fire-power lies.
No one wants to see kiddies duking it out, right?
Fedor, Crocop and Minotauro are men.
Crapper weights like Matt Hughes, who ground and pound, is like comparing a simple hand gun to an anti-aircraft gun: They both shoot ammo, they both make noise, but the fire-power… uncompareble.
BJ Penn is cool. But so was shoji.
To sum things up, fights like Stephan Bonnar Vs. Forrest Griffin belong on amatuer night. not “the greatest stand-up match in history”. come on…
its really disapointing that they called off the fight becasue i would have been a blast seeing liddell get ko… and also dana white’s face and response to it.. the reason why the fight was called of was because of dana white… he probably called it off because liddell is the one whos making him all his money hes dana’s man …. so if someone comes over from pride and beats the **** out of his star alot of his fans are gonna go to pride… so bets that dana white called this fight off… or made something happen so that silva wouldnt fight at ufc.
Reds191, i cant say i totally agree with wat you said..
I agree that the griffin vs bonnar fights are overrated, and i agree that Pride runs the heavy weight division.
I dont agree with wat your sayin about matt hughes and the other weight division fighters. Alot of the lighter weight fights are more entertaining than the heavyweights. They dont gas as quickly and end up hugging each other and laying on top of each other. I like every since weight class out there, you get to see real athletes competing at the same standards.
Look at boxing for instance, you think all that matters is the Heavyweights? theres alot of great athletes and great warriors who simply werent born at 6’6, some were born 5’6, that doesnt mean theyre “kiddies”.
I guess you wouldnt give bruce lee any credit as a martial artist just because hes not a heavy weight? Tho if he went against fedor in a pride match he would get crushed, not because fedor is better than him, simply because he twice his size. Thats why weight classes exist, or else in 90% of the fights, the bigger guy will win. Obviously there will be exceptions, like when genki sudo tapped out butterbean lol
With this in mind, why do you think they dont allow REAL sumos into mma? all you ever see is the mini sumos around 300 punds. The reason being, if you got a 600 pound guy coming into the ring, he will flatten ANYONE regardless of skill. If thats the way you want to look at it, then Fedor and crocop are kiddies compared to the real sumos.
So if you looking for the strongest, toughest “men” on the planet, watch some sumo matchs.
yea dude…thats guys awsome…i love his opinion on things and how he put all you f ags down for judging something you dont understand. Maybe you should get in there and see how long youll last
@ 25 – BVRASP…
You make some valid points, no question about it.
As for myself, one of the things that drive me to watch fights, are the athletes.
Watching big guys move as they do, is outstanding… and I don’t think I would be mistaken if the body-build on tanks such as Mark Coleman or Ken Shemrock (notice – body build, not ability…) makes some of us MMA fans work harder at the gym.
We adore them because they are monsters by our terms.
True, there is something very appealing in normal-size guys making some incredible efforts as pro-athletes (hence the great admiration of basketball’s Steve Nash), but we like seeing sensational sights in the Octagon, or in between the ropes – and whats more sensational than a 7’2′ scrub getting knocked out by guys who are a foot shorter?
Genki Sudo is a great entertainer… at first I thought he was a clown, but took me exactly 45 seconds into a fight to realize this guy is as pro as it gets. (btw – I would really like to see him getting knocked out, as all I have access to is Emule with limited selection- TV doesn’t show MMA here)
As to your sumo claims – I have to disagree… MMA fighters have incredible instincts, and it will be very hard for a sumoer to sit on them – he’ll most likely get knocked out in the process, as his jaw is even more fragile than the ones the encounter normally.
(Guess eating rice doesn’t make your mouth stronger…)
And must I say they have the stamina of a crippled turtle?
I mean, its not easier to carry this much weight around, you get tired from simply standing up.
Sumos are no match to real warriors.
The trouble now, is that the UFC is clearly choosing quantity over quality. And why shouldn’t they? sponsers roll in the big notes, fans get some random enthusiasts, and all who adore skill has to bite some serious lips as part of the anger management.
Too bad Pride seems to be following those footsteps.
Maybe one of them should turn some events into some sort of “clan-war” – dojo’s duking it out.
If you pay reasonably, you can use big names. If you use big names, you’ll collect in the end of the day.
this is what BVRASP ment “So if you looking for the strongest, toughest “men†on the planet, watch some PRIDE FIGHTING ”
cant wait for axlesander emilenanko to go to UFC and beat up tim silvia…
Strav, Anderson Silva is a Pride Fighter. See how he made Rich Franklin look like an Amateur?
hehe yea great idea REDS191, I would LOVE to see some dojo vs dojo matchs. Like in the old days hehe, but too bad its all about money these days.
Lets not even get into the sumo thing, bro, theyre monsters, their almost indestructible. I doubt anyone could knock out a TRUE sumo. Look how tough guys like cabbage are, times that by 2, and it might seem weird but sumos have incredible stamina. They are highly skilled, highly disciplined, with freakish power, theyre not just fat slobs, their finely tuned athletic… fat slobs lol.
to answer Veto, yes anderson Silva did destroy Franklin, but that doesnt make him an amateur. It doesnt even say that hes a better fighter, it just means, that NIGHT he was the better fighter. Like when Vitor took out Vanderlei within seconds, doesnt mean hes an amateur, It was just an amazing performance by one fighter and less than impressive from the other hehe.
Lets just say, Theres alot of things i like about Pride and alot of things i like about UFC, i think the ideal fighting league would be somewhere in between. I like the cage better than the ring, I like the elbows on the ground in UFC, I like the knees on the ground in pride. Although it might be exciting to see a guy get his head stomped on, or jumping in the air and landing with both feet on someones chest, but i really dont think its a good idea to allow that in MMA. Theres way too much chance that someone will get seriously injured or maybe even killed.
Pride or UFC??? somewhere in the middle… i love them both! respect to all the guys who go out and put it on the line.
What’s up!!
This my first time commenting on this site. I’d just like to say I hope Crocop does get a contract with the UFC. He will take over the Heavyweight division and force Dana to bring in more top ranked competition. I’m also a fan of both Pride and UFC but tend to watch UFC because it is more accessable than Pride is in the states. I like that the UFC is putting on free show every coule of months in the form of the Ultimate fight nights. Since Pride lost it’s TV contract they are not getting the exposure they once were. The New years events for Pride and the UFC should be great. The Tito and Chuck fight is a little over hyped considering they already fought and Tito didn’t give much of an account of himself. If and that’s a big IF he can get Chuck to the ground and keep him there he has a good chance of utilizing his signiture ground and pound. If he makes the mistake of trying to stand in there and swing again he will be KO’d much the same way. I think Pide is cool still holding open weight tournement style fight cards. There is no way Sylvia would be able to take on more than one top level opponent the same night.
I don’t look at it so much as to being loyal to one organization or another, as fans we can appreciate the goog thing that both have to offer. Going back to the fight nights this upcoming show on December 13 should be good. I’m a big fan of Diego Sanchez since were from the same home town. His last fight with Karo was great. Show he can overcome adversity. Joe Riggs will be a good test also. He is a better fighter than his record shows. If he can beat Riggs he should be in line for a title shot. I think GSP is awsome, and the way he took care of Hughes shows how much he has improved since the first fight. If Diego does get a shot at GSP that would be a good fight. My heart is with Diego but GSP is going to be hard to dethrone. As far Tim Sylvia goes his days are numbered. He is a good fighter mainly because of his size but I agree that Fedor, Crocop, Barrnett and Nogueira would be able to take his belt. He may be able to fend them off for a while with his reach but once he’s taken down he will be outmatched. Crocop and Fedor would KO him. The fight I’m hoping to see is Mike Tyson. Although I don’t think he has enough MMA experience to be a real threat it would be an interesting to see him hit someone with the small gloves. They better put a Hannibal Lecter mask on him so he don’t take a chunk!! Don’t mean to be rambling just wanted to say whats up and I like the way everone voices their opinion. I think with both organization taking each other seriously we will all be in for some great fights in the near future.
Welcome to MMA HQ, Mad.
Good to have you here.
Hey Mad, you make some good points, i think they said Tyson is gonna be fighting with boxing rules and gloves.
That’s not fair for the other fighters. If Tyson wants to sign with Pride he should have to play by the same rules. That’s probably the only way they could get him to agree to fight. He has to know he would have no chance against any of the heavyies or light heavy weights in a true mix martial art battle. He does have an incredible right hook and uppercut so he at least would have a punchers chance but that’s it. I heard it rumored he might fight Silva so I was looking forward to seeing him get crushed. If they do fight with boxing rules it would still be a good fight but Silva would have to adapt to the extremely restricted rules that would favor Tyson. Anyway thanks for welcoming me in and I look forward to chatting with you all.
Hey MAD, I dont think its unfair for tyson to compete in pride under boxing rules. It would be unfair to ask him to compete in anything other than boxing rules, hes a boxer. The question is, could Tyson even win a boxing match? I doubt it, Tyson has been washed up for years, Even in his prime, hes a 1-2 round fighter, if it goes to the 3rd round hes finished, even in his prime he had zero endurance. He brings the heat first round, if he doesnt get the KO, hes done. Now that hes older and relatively out of shape, im sure his skills have suffered too from the lack of rigorous training and lack of actual fights.
That’s true he is a boxer but many other mixed martial came from boxing and wrestling backgrounds and made the transition to MMA. He is limited stamina wise and you made a good point that he probably is a little past his prime to compete at the top level of the sport regarless of the rules that are applied. I’m just hoping when he does fight they give him a legitamate opponent. It will be fun to watch either way because he’s been an icon of the fight industry for a long time and everyone is courious what he can do with the little gloves.
ya, thing is Tysons not looking to become anything more than what he is right now, hes just lookin for another quick payday to pay off his debts.. Man! how that guy squandered his fortune ill never know..
But id like to see tyson fight Mark Hunt, that should be… interesting hehehe
Man I don’t know why you guys speak of Mike Tyson coming to MMA as if it was a good thing.
MMA is home for some of the world’s finest athletes, and shouldn’t be considered a grave-yard for a has-beens.
Any ring recruiting this joker to fight in it right now, is dishonoring itself. He is not more of a fighter than your ordinary bouncer in a night-club.
I would like to see olympic medalists fighting in those rings, nothing less.
Pride or UFC will make a mistake signing this scrub.
Everybody is forgetting about Geoges St.Pierre. He beat the crap out of Matt Hughes and BJ Penn. He is the most exciting fighter in the UFC and is the new generation.
I really want o see Silva and Liddell and i don’t think Dana is scared as said in this article that there was complications with the contract. I’m really not the biggest Liddell fan but Silvia s F’n intense. He can take the hugest hits as you saw in the Crocop fight….By the way it isn’t like he got totally messed up in the Crocop fight…He did pretty good especially after those devistating blows
Anyways with pride and ufc….I watch ufc on tv and pride on the internet. I feel like an alien when i watch pride because it seems so far away and is always in japanese. Hopefully spike or anything gets a pride deal. And ya St Pierre is the UNREAL! watch some old fights and u will see
This is hilarious. The Pride guys need to give it up. Yes, you were first. Yes, your heavyweights are dominant. Yes, your world exposure is greater than the UFC – for now. But in no way are your fighters better simply because Pride has been around longer, or because the UFC is based out of the States – and people that aren’t American can’t stand to see anything American take off. The UFC has the potential to take anything good Pride has left… and they probably will. Dana isn’t scared to do so – it takes time.
I like many of the points that were brought up earlier using LOGIC – something I have yet to see from many Pride supporters. First, elbows from the ground and pound position are essential – why would Pride allow kicks and knees but not elbows? I’d like to see all of them, but I’d take the UFC’s elbows over Pride’s knees and kicks anyday.
Second, the cage is by far better than a ring – no place to hide, and it looks cooler. The only disadvantage I could think of would be spectators live at the show wouldn’t like to look through a cage; but as any hockey fan can tell you, looking through the netting isn’t that bad.
Third, Pride and the UFC use different gloves for combat. Pride’s gloves are much lighter and offer fighters less padding to absorb impact. I believe this has a lot to do with Pride fans’ psyche related to their heavyweights hitting harder (not to take anything away from Fedor’s bombs or CroCop’s kicks – those things could take down an elephant).
On another note, Pride fans can only talk up their heavyweights. Yes, those guys are exciting and yes I do believe Fedor would take down Sylvia, but that’s about all you got. Minus all the racial slurs relating to the middle-weight, welter-weight, and feather-weights of Pride, the writer was dead-on. Race aside, those guys would get destroyed; it would be brutal. GSP is just plain nuts and Anderson Silva is scary good. BJ Penn is dropping to 155 and Sherk’s ground and pound technique wouldn’t be stopped by any type of feather-weight striking, let’s be serious. And honestly, enough about W. Silva beating Liddell – “because he’s an all-around better fighter” – that’s laughable. Silva got rocked in the UFC and he still would, he’d charge right into knock out.
The UFC is on the rise, and fighters within other organizations are taking notice. Fedor and CroCop are awesome but Pride just isn’t with the times. I haven’t heard a shred of news relating to any “name” Pride fighters signing longer term contracts. Enough about this, I’ll leave with three sets of three letters that should scare the crap out of Pride fans: UFC, USA, and GSP!
@ Kyle, No. 39.
I’ll respond at your level, so that you can understand me better:
Fedor and Crocop pwnz all, k thx.
UFC hold kindergarden events selling PPV to ignorants willing to pay.
GSP is Candian, k thx.
I wouldn’t let Dana be chairman of a sea-lion thorwing event, let alone a major MMA ring. what do I forget? oh yes – k thx.
and now lets move on to the cheer:
There once was a dude named Kyle,
using an arrogant writing style.
Along came super-writer Dr. Toma,
and knocked him in a wtf pwnt coma.
And now seriously:
I don’t have a problem with America, and I don’t think any of the other talk-backers do. Cool country, love your roads, and you made Boston Legal happen.
But if anyone has a problem with your country, its partly because of people like you, acting all arrogant and spreading hate.
And why adding race issues to the subject? this is the internet amigo.
I’m not responding to any MMA-related argument you made, cause as far as I’m concerend, your post was utterly irrelevant.
I’ll finish with three wishes: Grow up, get a life, and live happily ever after.
bye bye sweety.
Utterly irrelevant??? Thats some boderline *** **** right there….
Why are you beaking him when you really didn’t say nething urself man. I know people hate United States but like this isn’t about patriotism this is about watching some good fights. I have been watching UFC and Pride since I was like 9 and they are both good stuff. But Dana is definately doing the best he can in my mind….even though the fights sometimes end up sucking balls they are still usually what i want to see.
Btw im Canadian,
The Crow….Rush…represent
-k thx….tool
Oh look, Kyle brought his little girlfriend JB to play…
Read what your boyfriend typed, then read what I typed.
use a dictionary if needed.
My post was anything but MMA-related. It reflected everything that is wrong with prejudice in the western world today.
Canada… what good is your country if the US treating your border line as if it was the mexican one?
So many hours in traffic, so little view.
Now, to the subject – my problem is with the quality of the fights in the UFC, which points out that Dana prefers quantity.
This is fine, as long as everyone knows that 50% or more of the product they buy, they can get for free on amatuer nights in my backyard.
You recognized that fact yourself in your post.
And because there is no effective way to compare the UFC and Pride, debating over who’s better, is like debating over who would win a duel – Spiderman or Batman?
sliva will end liddles carear if theys fights
Those two are my favorite fighters who ever wins that fight i dont care but pls make it happen
****!!!! imagine two of the most awesome stand up fighter battle it out
“ICEMAN VS THE AXE MURDERER”
THATS WHERE THE BIG BUCKS IS………………
Now we cant say fighter 1 can beat fighter 2 because fighter 1 beat figher 3 who lost to fighter 2. You keep saying liddel is a better fighter than he was 3-5 years ago, so is silva, when he beat jackson he was rewarded a black belt in jui-jitsui, I doubt belfort and ortiz can beat him now in his prime, silva has fought people weighing more than 50 pounds heavier, than him . Let liddel fight in a open weight class(I if he would ever do that) you’ll see how far he will get, by the way if you want to use the formula like I said in the top of paragraph you’ll would know liddel got his butt kick by Jackson who was put to sleep by silva (not too long ago)
Wandy fears the Iceman.
Great fight
I would like to respond to “bvrasp”‘s comments on sumo. Remember Royce Gracie?
He defeated a 770 pound sumo Emmanuel something. Emmanuel is the largest and heaviest sumo in history.I know that other sumo wrestlers have lost in UFC, and that they tended to be in the early UFC.
Sumo men can be good, but I think not against pro fighters. Maybe with the new rules thye might do better. Thats why you dont see them anymore.
I weigh 100kg and can V-Squat 850 pounds.
When u are strong and quick, its not like an ordinary person fighting a bigger person.
That said, I would like to see some real sumo wrestlers win or lose.
i would say its likely we dont see more Sumo wrestlers is due to the weight restrictions, im not sure there is many good quality Sumo who could weigh in at 265lbs or less. aside from that i think Sumo wrestlers get paid more then MMA fighters AND they get treated like absolute royalty in Japan, so i theres not a whole lot of reason for them to make the jump.
WOW! whered you dig that comment up? hehe.. this thread has my first post on this site.. hehe
First of all, i think your talking about Emannuel Yarborough lol, just because he competed in amateur sumo, i wouldnt consider him a REAL sumo. He had the size, but not the skill/conditioning of a serious sumo. Giant Silva was even bigger than yarborough, but he also had no skill or conditioning.
I still think a real Sumo could be a dominant force in MMA, especially after this past UFC event, Lesnar proved that size strength and skill can be a devastating combination. Now imagine putting Lesnar against a disciplined 600 lb sumo, what do you think would happen? hehe
But regardless.. like RJ said, those days of super heavyweight MMA fights are long gone anyways..
