BJ Penn

It’s now official, Georges St. Pierre has pulled out of his rematch vs UFC Welterweight champion Matt Hughes at UFC 63 on September 23. In St. Pierre’s place, B.J. Penn will have his own rematch against Matt Hughes, whom he defeated for the belt in 2004.

Reports were circulating earlier this month that Penn would have his second fight back in the UFC on October 10 on the same UFC Fight Night card as the rumored Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock III fight. Since Penn has already been training for a fight in early October, moving up to late September should not be a problem.

“I get to do what I came back to do in the UFC,” said Penn. I got an amazing opportunity to come back. I was going to come back to kick St. Pierre’s *** and then kick Hughes’ *** and it got derailed. Now I get to correct that and kick Hughes’ *** and then go and kick St. Pierre’s ***.”

Personally, I wanted to see St. Pierre fight Hughes again, and judging from our poll earlier, 2-out-of-3 of you thought that St. Pierre would win the UFC Welterweight belt. If he’s not at 100% though, I’m glad St. Pierre pulled out. I only want to see him fight when he can fully perform. I’m sure this is a huge disappointment, and if Penn beats Hughes and wins the belt the UFC has a peculiar situation. They now have a Welterweight champion who became the champ after losing his previous fight to the #1 contender for the belt he now holds.

  1. I’m cool with this. Plus I can speak from experience, BJ has the hottest groupies.

Its nice to see all the Penn fans out, I think he is OK, but Hughes is alot smarter then his first fight with him. I think Hughes will just pound Penn.

wow! 98 votes and its 50-50, this should be a great fight!

BJ is always the underdog, and he always comes through in the end. I would love to see BJ win the fight! but the fact is, i cant see anyone beating matt hughes right now. The only way i could see hughes losing is by striking, if penn can land a hard knee, he could do it.. but in my opinion, its Hughes all day.
