A few days before UFC 64, Matt Huges made the following post on his personal website blog:

Tomorrow I’m going to New York, Chuck and I will be on ESPN. Fly back tomorrow night. This week I’ll spend Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning with my brother getting crops out and also trying to spend as much time with my family as I can. Thursday night, my wife and I leave for Las Vegas for the UFC. I hope Rich wins, but if Anderson wins I would consider bumping up to 185 and fighting him. I’ll fly home Sunday.

Really, Matt? Do you still want to consider moving up to 185 to fight Silva after what you saw at UFC 64? I really don’t know if Matt’s comments are just a show of bravado or if he is really serious. If he is serious, I’m not really sure what I would make of that fight, but I would have to take Anderson over Hughes at this point. Your thoughts? Do you wanna see Matt Hughes vs. Anderson Silva? If so, who would win?

wow! thats quite a statement.. I doubt hughes would really move to 185 just to fight silva. But if he did, it would be very interesting heheh im sure hughes wont be standing with him tho heheh, and im not aware of silvas skills on the ground, tho its doubtful that he could hang with hughes on the ground.. Hughes has held his own grappling with some of the best fighters in the world, like royce and BJ. I would like to see hughes at 185, tho i think his frame is suited to 170. I think he could beat silva assuming he put him down and kept him down.
I wouldnt mind seeing this fight heheh
I think he’s nuts.
I second the insanity defense put forward by Whaledog.
It was only a few weeks ago that we saw Hughes get picked apart by BJ Penn on the feet before Penn gassed and/or was hurt.
Silva would destroy Hughes, keep him at a distance & pepper him with shots. And when Hughes would shoot in for the inevitable takedown try, he’d likely eat a knee the way Carlos Newton did when he tried something similar against Silva several years back. (They had to wake Newton up from that encounter, btw.)
Hughes is an awesome fighter, and Silva is by no means invincible. But this would be a bad matchup for Matt.
I agree as well, of course. Hughes nearly lost to BJ, and I think the big factor in a Silva vs. Hughes fight would be the size matchup. Silva is of course much taller and has a much longer reach than Hughes. Combine that with Silva’s great striking and it would be next to impossible for Matt to get anywhere close to Silva.
Well seeing as how Matt Hughes won’t even beat GSP. Besides, I’m sure if you ask Matt now he’d react differently.
Would I like to see it? Hell Yeah, seeing Matt destroyed would bring me joy.
heheh i dont think you guys are giving hughes enough credit. Theres no doubt silva is a great striker, and he has the height and reach advantage (which works against you on the ground btw) but beyond that, i dont think hes testing hughes on the ground. So the point is, will hughes get him down? I personally think hughes could easily win this fight if he gets him down, and silva can easily win if he doesnt.. If i were betting on this fight, my money would be on hughes, the classic matchu up of the striker and the grappler, and you all seem to give it to the striker automatically. History has shown that the grappler has a big advantage over the striker, it surprises me a bit to hear everyone backing silva, but probably because of his amazing performance against franklin hehehe. Personally i would like to see franklin vs silva 2, as i doubt it would be anything like the first fight. He surprised franklin in that fight, and i dont care how franklin trains, im pretty sure he doesnt push himself enough, when you training at a camp where your the big dog, nobody is gonna push you as hard as you can go. Rich Franklin should join the miletich camp, and live there with them during training. They will push him to realize his full potential. The kind of knowledge and experience you can learn from those guys in invaluable! i know he trains with them sometimes, but hes not a miletich man, those guys eat, sleep and breath training, physical and mental, if he moves to iowa, we would see a strong, tough, conditioned, fearless rich franklin.
Hey BV – in hindsight on this comment, would you today argue differently? Lolz..
Kansas, about the Hughes thing? or the Rich Franklin thing?
This was like 3 years ago and Silva only had 2 fights in the UFC, his KO of Leben and Franklin. At the time i thought Hughes could out grapple him assuming he could take him down and i still think he could have. Now no way in hell, Hughes is not Hughes anymore and Anderson is like a 205er now, no way in hell Matt could beat him now.
For Franklin, you know im a huge fan and i still think he could have beat Anderson in their 2nd meeting if he did everything right. Theres a huge skill gap between them though, and back then Franklin was the bigger guy. If they fought again i would have to defer to Silva this time, hes proved that and i cant deny that.
As much as i like both Hughes and Franklin, they havent changed their game over these past few years and Silva has increased his boxing skills dramatically plus learned to cut weight UFC style. No way either of them could beat Anderson now…..
I was ribbing you .. lol
All Silva needs is to lern2sprawl…and he’ll win.
I’m kidding…sort of.
Hughes is a legend and a badass but size, reach, kicks, thai clinch, and not too mention that silva is a bjj black belt (which people dont seem to realize). hughes couldnt keep penn down after struggling to get him down and didnt come close to taken gsp down in the 2nd fight.
He wouldnt come close here. SILVA by ko 3:45 in the first round.
I think Hughes would ground and pound Silva. He would have no ground defense against Hughes
Ken is wrong…..
YEA I DOUBT THAT KEN…..
SYLVIA HAS GREAT JIU JITSU
This will never happen………………better to wait for Henderson.
Let Matt first worry about regaining his title.
DENNIS
Y DOES RICHARD CALL U HILLBILLY
’cause he’s a Diik!
Matt Hughes would get beat down like a little boy. the only welters that should even think of moving up to fight Anderson are GSP and Fitch. and just maube for Fitch. i think GSP could beat Anderson but Silva would ****** destroy Hughes.
I think Hughes would ground and pound Silva to a pulp !!!
this was not me that said this
Richard, usually someone suffering from Schizophrenia will give there other personality a different name then there own, but hey we know your one of a kind…. or two of a kind….. or whatever lol.
lol, I can vouch for Richard on this one. It wasn’t “our” Richard. Someone else left a comment with the name Richard. You can tell, because their avatars are different since they left the comments with different email addresses.
i know i just had to give him a hard time lol. the “other” Richard has a link to some fat free diet thing, so thats what tipped me off.
plus rj if u ever seen me u would know i wouldnt be the person with a fat free diet link weighing 465lbs……..
i remember you saying before that your a plus size brother, but i didnt wanna say that because some people are sensitive about these things lol. you dont really weigh 465lbs. do ya? what are you like twelve feet tall? lol. man im 6 foot even and and i have a hard time getting over 190lbs. although i look like Corey Hill during a weight cut lol.
I am 5ft 8 and currently walk around at 193, I am cutting though.
@RJ
Richard isn’t sensative about his weight, he doesn’t really ever seem to care. lol. it’s all good bro.
5’8″ and 193lbs. damn bro you must be solid as rock. ALL my weight is bone mass, big hands, feet, shoulders, but no meat lol. i have a chest like a ten year old boy, im talking zero pecs lol.
Yeah I try to keep in shape, I lived in Brazil for a year and trained BJJ there – it’s hot, no A/C and the diet is organic and solid .. none of that Taco Bell business going on down there, you eat beans, rice, salad sans the dressing and chicken or beef all the time every day – the diet is the biggest thing, my wife is Brazilian so she makes healthy foods, I get 5-10 servings of greens a day, protein supplements twice a day, 3 meals and I hit the gym maybe 3 times a week, maybe.. the pec issue can be solved simply with a daily regimen of 120 pushups cycled at 30 reps X 4
ah im not worried about being ripped, i’ve always had surprising punching power for my size and every time i put on even a bit of muscle i feel like it takes away some of my mobility AND takes away a lot of my power. as far as grappling goes i can rely on good movement and tricky tactics, so with all that i think its a good trade off for the lack of brute strength. now a better diet i could use, KD and pizza along with all the other CRAP that i eat is useless for staying in shape lol.
Thing is.. when I grapple or spar with other players if they are in mediocre shape or their diet isn’t up to par, they gas in less than the first minute.. its pretty amazing how a person can run on a tredmill for 15 minutes straight, and that same person can’t hang in a ring for more than a minute without just going limp.. you train so you know what I mean… my brother is a prime example, he has a lot of heart, but he also has a gut and turns bright red and gets really tire .. lolz
you absolutely right man, my gas tank SUCKS. if i was still doing my thing i might opt to work on it but at this point i just play around in the gym and teach my boys stuff so my motivation to REALLY get in shape is all but gone. but i know what you mean, even if im grappling with someone that i out weigh by a bunch i still burn out super quick.
im 6’1 465,but i try to stay active, but oddly women dont seem to mind.
just like Biggie lol.
