For those of you who have read MMA HQ for any period of time, you realize my opinion of Frank Mir has changed drastically over the past year. I went from being one of the biggest Frank Mir fans around, to more or less blacklisting him. The Las Vegas Review Journal has an interesting article today about Mir and his training efforts for his upcoming fight with undefeated Brandon Vera at UFC 65.
Here are just the first few paragraphs from the article.
A lot of mixed martial artists resemble NASCAR drivers because they have advertisements plastered all over them.
But Frank Mir gets the idea he missed out on some money by not landing a promotional deal with Del Taco.
“For a long time I existed on their Macho Beef Burrito,” Mir says, laughing.
At the end of the article Frank goes on to say:
“For a long time, I did this (fighting) for me, but it’s my job and I have a wife and kids who depend on me to do my job well,” said Mir, who brings his family with him when he trains. “No fighter is more conditioned than I am now.
“There’s a lot at stake for me and I’m pushing to get every last bit out of what I have. I had the (fighting skills) and I’ve got the training and now I’ve got the nutrition part done. I feel like everything is tuned and lining up right. I’m ready for a big fight.”
I hope Frank really is training seriously for this fight because no one should take Brandon Vera, or any other MMA fighter, lightly. For Frank to say “No fighter is more conditioned than I am now” I think is quite a stretch, but as much as I may regret it, I’m going to give Frank the benefit of the doubt. We’ll see which Frank Mir shows up at UFC 65.

As I continue to hope for the old Frank Mir to show up, I read the post and realized another reason why I liked Mir….. I feel better knowing that our diets were both pretty crappy! Anyway, I hope Mir is in as good a shape as he says and I look forward to what should be a very good technical fight. If however Mir is not in shape this fight may not make it past the first round. I think Vera is dangerous enough to make a non conditioned Frank Mir look like an amateur. Mir would only have his raw instincts as a fighter to rely on for a win. Without gas in the tank the victory would nearly be impossible barring a bonehead mistake which could leave a submission opportunity for Mir on Vera……then again he will still need some gas to pull that off.
Sign me up for the former Mir fan who was severely disenchanted by his return. Mir fans and Penn should get together sometime for group sessions. I happen to be both, so I’m really screwed. Hell why not invite the Ricco fans aswell, we’ll grill out or something.
better make it a vegetarian cookout if we are inviting Ricco and Mir. we don’t want to encourage their demise.
lol rico. Seriously tho, its about time Mir is focusing on conditioning, because that was always his problem, even the “old frank mir” had terrible conditioning. Its not enough just to be an amazing technical fighter. If he really has got his conditioning up to a level where he can go 3 rounds without gassing, and he takes it to the ground, i could see him finishing vera. If he cant take vera down, or if his conditioning comes up short, vera will destroy him. I give the edge to vera in this fight.
like penn mir might think his techniques is all he needs to win fights but if there aint gas in your car it aint going to run mir will lose on against vera
Im hoping to see the old Frank Mir, otherwise I fear this may be the last time we see him in a UFC octagon. I think the weigh-in Friday will tell alot.
Mir looked pretty good at the weigh in. This may be a great fight after all.
