Georges St. PierreDana White, president of the UFC, confirmed to the media yesterday that the third fight between Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and former champion Matt Hughes will take place on April 7, 2007 in Montreal, Canada. The rubbermatch will mark the first UFC event held in Canada, and the start of a big international push for the UFC. (Rumors currently are circulating of the UFC holding shows in Mexico and the United Kingdom.)

This fight of course will only take place if St. Pierre and defend his title on February 3, in Las Vegas against Matt Serra, winner of The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback. I, personally, don’t see any problem with that, however.

I’m not a big fan of the instant rematch the UFC has been doing lately such as Silva vs Arlovski. If St. Pierre has to fight they should make Matt fight at least one fight in between. Possibly Diego if he can get through Riggs tonight. I know Hughes is Dana man and don’t want to see him lose because it might take from the hype of the rematch but every time a champion loses should the champion automatically get an instant rematch? I think this is more to appeal to the first Canadian show and the UFC’s expansion but I’d like to see Hughes have to fight a couple of the other top contenders to prove he is still the number 1 contender to the title.

Much too soon. I don’t like this at all as this isn’t very exciting at this time. I think they should let both fighters get at least 2 more fights under their belt and let the public build up a clamor for a rematch. I also think it would be bad for the UFC and St Pierre should Hughes get the belt back so fast since it is never good for belts to change hands so fast and “legendary” career crushing for Hughes to lose 2 fights so close to each other. This seems to be a lose lose match up at this time. With the influx of new talent that will be entering the UFC in 07 there is no need to rush this!

yup, both you guys know wats up, i dont see how an immediate rematch makes sense to anyone.. except huhghes lol. I like hughes, hes a great grappler, but i think he should have to have atleast one fight in between before he gets another shot. I can see them doing that for arlovski Sylvia cuz theres lack of Heavyweight Talent in UFC these days. Welterweight probably has the MOST talent in UFC, so theres ALOT of other guys who also work hard everyday, give someone else a shot.

I think if they get a rematch so quick, and they lose 2 in a row that quickly, it really puts them off the radar. Like what happened to Arlovski, If your the #1 contender and you lose to the champ twice in a row, people dont wanna see you fight the champ again.. so it will be a LONG WHILE till you get another title shot.

What if they start having automatic rematchs on the same night as the original fight?!
