Randy CoutureThe rumor mill is running wild right now, as there is wide speculation that UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture will be coming out of retirement to fight current UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Syliva at UFC 68 in Columbus, Ohio.

Couture is set to make an appearance on “Inside the UFC” this Thursday night on SpikeTV, and is supposed to be making a “big announcement.”

We had previously reported that Tim Syliva would be fighting Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 68, but now it appears that Randy will be moving to Heavyweight and fighting Sylvia.

I’m not sure how I feel about Randy coming back to fight in the Heavyweight division. I’d love to have Randy back, and no one wants to see him fight Chuck Liddell for a fourth time, so I guess this makes sense. I just hope Randy doesn’t lose to Tim.

Thanks Brian I’m done with this discussion there’s no reasoning with the great Dennis. Sorry for all the wasted time and emails to everyone I think this is a great site and I’m done stooping down to his level.

Just for the record so all of you know,

You can unsubscribe yourself from any of these comment “threads” at any time. The instructions on how to unsubscribe from a “comment thread” should be included in each email you receive. If the instructions aren’t there, someone give me a heads-up and I’ll fix that problem right away.

If you don’t want to ever be subscribed to the follow-up comments at all, just uncheck the box when you make a comment.

i think most of us like the updates on the posts its just the part were you get 100 emails of two or three people taking pot shots at each other. my great idea is those people who wanna just call each other names should a very least use a thread that know one else is posting on. or even better there is teen chat rooms were you can argue with random people in real time
p.s. i cant post anymore on fighter of the year because it doesnt have the anti-spam word any help with this would be cool.thanks

  4. Dennis says:

Hey DJ, thanks, but I like this open forum format. The emails don’t really bother me, unless some idiot is making personal attacks against me without any substance or point like in this example message #151

The whole point here was to fire one last shot, not so cleverly disguised as a mock apology to Brian, because I sincerely apologized earlier….. heh heh, stooping to my level. LOL

It’s all in good fun, but it’s better with the facts instead of empty rhetoric.

    What do you think?

  5. Dr J says:

    @ R.J.

I’ll look into it for you. It appears to me that you should be able to post on any of the topics. Is the anti-spam word just not appearing at all (i.e. is it just a blank white square?) or are you seeing something else?

Also, I’ve got a project that I’m working on for the site, and I would like to have you be part of the testing before I launch it. It’s still a ways away from being ready, but if you would be interested, just send me an email at drj [at] mmahq [dot] com with your email address so I can keep it on file when I’m ready to test it out.

    ABOUT CARLOS…

I asked Carlos about his fight with Hughes, I asked him if hughes was out in that fight when he got “slammed”. He laughed and said Matt Hughes is a great champion. The respect he has for other fighters and other people in general is Incredible. He speaks japanese FLUENTLY and he lives largely by japanese custom, thats the kind of dude id like to train with!

At one point me and my buddy were looking for a MMA dojo around the city, found this crazy spot “toronto BJJ”. GSP has been known to drop by or showcase a clinic which is cool. The training is MMA so you have all kinds of Classes going on simultaneously. Boxing wrestling, muai thai and BJJ. They even have a full size octagon!

It was all great, but what it was missing, was the classical discipline and respect associated with martial arts. There IS a reason why it was developed in that way, much like how its used in the army. In my opinion it is a NECESSITY! I stayed in my old dojo with the classical values intact. Though i train Kempo, so obviously its not a “complete” style, no one style is, unless your training in “MMA”. I prefer to train with my friend who studys BJJ, Krav maga and muai thai and we share techniques with each other.

theres alot of “philosophy” associated with martial arts, its not the same to learn the techniques without really knowing …WHY. I personally know guys who would destroy any MMA fighter out there, but their not “fighters” they dont believe in fighting for pride/money, or in some cases, their considered a deadly weapon.. For example: one of Carlos teachers, Moni Aizik, what can i say.. the guys an animal! firstly hes built like Rambo, he used to train elite Isreali commandos (which are the deadliest in the world). He also one of the founders of Krav Maga, the guys a pioneer and a living legend. As well as MANY others, the grand master of my style for instance, Fred Villari, he trained in the shaolin temple, If you see one of his clinics, you would swear it was fake or something! its almost magic, thats what first attracted me to martial arts, and thats what it will always mean to me.

Im curious what you guys think about the issue of classical training and philosophy as opposed to modern MMA training and ethics.

  7. Dennis says:

Hey BV, I knew there was more substance to you than most here, and I totally agree with you 100%.

I also know some guys that are living weapons, that I hate to say even Chuck would have no chance. There is magic in those moves….

But we have to give the MMA credit for doing more for the martial arts in the last decade that most have done in a lifetime! But with the absence of philosophy, you’re only left with those guys feeding on hype, who maybe can fight, but will never be legends. Those are the guys that belong in the WWF.

I believe there is no one best discipline, but the combination of skills from differenct disciplines that breed the best of the best. But all MUST include the philosopy, which is in itself the most important skill to master. This is the whole theory of Jeet Kune Do. And this is what legends are made of.

  8. bvrasp says:

yea, the thing is, being deprived of these ideals is probably creating more and more fools who will likely kill someone the first time they get some beer muscles. There are definately alot of great camps and organizations with a great deal of RESPECT for the martial arts. But there are WAY more idiotic muscleheads getting involved now. In the past these kind of people wouldnt make it very far, because they would lack the strength to endure the classical teachings. Whether it be learning forms and kata they might see as a waste of time, or getting frustrated with the whole idea of respect in the first place because they have no respect for anything to begin with.

  9. Dennis says:

Here Here, Now this is what this forum is meant to be! Dr. J, you must be delighted.

  10. bvrasp says:

heres an example for you guys, the shoot for instance. Frankly the shoot is a pathetic maneuver, i can see how its used in competition, and how BJJ is great in competition, but in practical situations, its VERY weak. I asked my sensei how he would defend against the shoot, simply, when they bow down and expose the back of their head and spine, as well as dedicating both their arms, your practically helpless to attack. A sharp chor or elbow to the brainstem could paralyze you for life! Im not even gonna get into “pulling guard” you better hope your on a mat or something, cuz if you try and pull guard on concrete.. your in BIG trouble.

Ofcourse hitting the neck and spine are illegal in all MMA organizations, thank god! hehe but alot of people dont know where martial arts ends, and MMA begins. The difference between combat and competition.

  11. Dennis says:

Again, wisely stated. You know what the shoot reminds me of…. elementary school, where every fight starts out on your feet, then one kid starts getting in more accurate strikes, so the losing kid puts his head down, and first starts wind-milling, then when that doesn’t work, tries to tackle his opponent to the ground, jump on his chest, and start whaling on him. The kid on the ground tries to raise up, grab onto anything so he doesn’t get punched in the face. When he’s unsuccessful, he turns over, and tries to get to his knees.

Where is the “art” in these techniques?

MMA stands for mixed martial arts, and I think it should effectively demonstrate the best skills from each discipline. Rarely, do we see an exceptional technique, but some are there, you just have to watch for them. Ideally, the exceptional techniques would be the standard, and the playground fighting would be only seen right before a fighter loses the match when he only has the instinct to survive left in his arsenal.

  12. bvrasp says:

yea thats how the UFC used to be, i like alot of things better about it now. The tournament style matches were bad because guys kept getting injured, the bare knuckles.. same reason. The UFC is alot better now that theyre trying to make it more of a sport because you dont want to see great fighters get injured and crippled. Its a competition. When people start think these are the most lethal guys in the world.. think again.

  13. Dennis says:

Thus, the padded octagon…. I’ve trained in three different disciplines, Tae Kwon Do & Akido, but the favorite was Hapkido under a very short man that I only know as Master Lee, who did not believe in padding. I have the utmost respect for that man, because he taught me discipline. His “dojo” was in an old National Guard armory…. on concrete. I was a long hairded, big mouth trouble maker, who thought he was bad. Well, Master Lee begged to differ. He used me for all demonstrations just to show me how bad I really was. Man I miss that little guy. I once saw him throw a 320 lb giant across the room, “over his head by his thumb”!!! talk about magic!

The other camps taught me some skills, but Master Lee taught me the philosophy of discipline.

  14. Amir says:

    bvrasp,

I actually miss the old UFC days. I don’t know if I would necessarily say because of the bareknuckle thing, of course, injuries is not what we want. But, what I do miss is the rivalries between fight camps.
(ex. Lion’s Den vs. Brazilian Top Team). I hate to make it sound like I don’t like the professionalism and respect, it just seemed that back then the fight was the most important thing and no one wanted to lose, so maybe they had more incentive to not be embarrassed and train. Real macho type stuff. Today, everything is public relations and sportsmanship etc. of course guys back then were also mostly street brawlers and not MMA expert athletes like today, but I would like the fights to have more meaning than just 2 guys doing their job, collecting a paycheck and endorsements and going home. I guess I get pissed when a fight is hyped up so much with “bad blood” and then when it’s all over…guys like Shamrock utter, “cmon man, we made a lot of money together”… that just makes it hard to believe which fighters are fighting for money and which fighters are fighting for pride, which I think is sometimes more important.

  15. bvrasp says:

ya i agree with you on that amir. The camp vs camp thing was great, i also liked the style vs style thing, the fights were really exciting back then hehe. Some organizations still operate like that these days.

  16. Dennis says:

    two words…. remember boxing.

It WILL happen. Do your research, and find out who the money behind Dana is.

  17. bvrasp says:

AHAHAHA funniest thing i ever seen!! I just saw this clip of rampage, peep this out for real people!! I was dying for like 10 min after seeing this!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8lbmmBdn04&mode=related&search=

  18. Dennis says:

oh man, that part about the cup was hilarious!

But the beginning part is what I don’t like because that is what he brings to the UFC……… WWF HYPE!

  19. Brian says:

Thanks BVR, that was pretty dang funny. There’s another video on the UFC website that has videos including “Rampage”, “Iceman”, and Tito Oritz. The one’s with Ortiz and Liddell are of after UFC 66. Those guys respect eachother a hell of a lot more than they did the first time they met. Tito was damn near beging to get to come train with Chuck…of course Chuck said “no”. Rampage’s video (like the one you found) shows how funny and entertaining he is. When asked what he wants to accomplish, he simply said he wanted to be remembered as the most enertaining fighter to come into MMA. Him and Ortiz are friends and he likes Tito’s style. Quinton will bring a lot to the UFC in ’07.

  20. Dennis says:

Yea, Rampage will bring in allot of hype in 07. Who knows, maybe the next great fighter could be Hulk Hogan?

  21. Dennis says:

There’s a good subject for debate Dr. J.

Should the UFC go in the direction of the WWF HYPE?

..or should it try to keep some credible sensibility to honor the martial arts?

  22. Brian says:

They need to find a happy median. Look at Pride…I personally think Pride “starts off” better than UFC–as far as ‘hype’ goes. They need to do whatever they can to make it as entertaining as possible without TELLING the fighters what to do or say when they are in the Octagon or outside of it. MMA already has the showmans like the Oritz or Jackson. The people will come and some will be more colorful than others. I would like to see the UFC try and “somewhat” minic the intersity that Pride does for it’s PPV fights.

  23. bvrasp says:

Yo dennis, the guys a clown, im sure hes been that way his whole life, before and after his fighting career. You want him to act all serious or something? dont hate man… Thats rampage, hes gon play the fool and most people find it funny man! lighten up, and so you know, those WWF guys are MONSTERS, they would destroy any MMA fighter with the amount of steroids they intake. Theyre rushing at a whole different level, thyre impervious to pain and ridiculously strong. A guy like that you would have to attack the eyes, throat or groin to stop him! str8 goods..

I hate wrestling, i dont want to see a choreographed musclebound ballet! i wanna see a contest! BUT dont think those guys are pushovers, the only reason its all fixed is because the amount of drugs those guys do could never be sanctioned as any kind of “competition”. If they DID actually fight each other, guys would be injured and killed VERY quickly. Forget about slams and wrestling moves, a punch from one of those guys will end your life man..

The difference is Rampage does it for real, and he does it under the same drug restrictions as any other MMA fighter. Because they also do as much drugs as will allow, what do you think most Xyience products are man? testosterone

  24. Dennis says:

So you don’t think that it degrades the fighter to act like an ***?

It’s also not only a question of discipline, but also focus. If a man’s focal point point is the dog collar image, he will never have the clear focus on the skills needed to become a legend.

  25. R.J. St.Croix says:

i dont know if pro wrestlers would “kill” legit mma fighters look at sean o’haire’s mma record LOL

  26. Brian says:

One last thing and I gotta go for awhile. WWF vs MMA. Come on…please!! An MMA fighter the same weight would destroy a WWF person. You got to be kidding. Right?? Someone once asked Jean Clyd Van-Damm if he would fight the K-1 champ of that time. He said HELL NO! That’s as far as I’m going on this one…WWF has and will be a joke compaired to a REAL sport.

As for the discussion over keeping the UFC pure. It’s a business, so don’t forget that. If it (something new) will make them money, they won’t care what kind of immage it gives MMA. They are here first and formost to make money. Of all the 1 million or so PPV buys for UFC 66, how many of those people do you think are currently taking a class or are going to the gym to learn a specific martial art?? I bet that number would be WELL below 35%. That means that most people tune in to be entertained. That’s it…just entertained for the night. What ever they can do to put on more of a show…I say go for it.

Remember Oriz vs Shamrock 1 in UFC 40?? Remember their entrances? Mainly Shamrocks? That’s about as far as they need to go with that. Because, of those 1 million PPV buys, around 50% of the people are probably like us…DIE HARD MMA FANS. So you got a point…don’t piss us off…LOL

    Good Debate

  27. bvrasp says:

under MMA rules, the type of roids they use are prohibited. When your a juicer and you come off the juice, you lose almost ALL your power. The one thing they rely on, so they fight the same as they normally would, but its just not there. What do you think if it was on the street? with all the roids in their system? lol that amount of endorphins your bullet proof! provided they dont hit any organs or major arteries heh

thats what im saying, im not down with wrestling but those guys deserve their respect too! especially when theyre gettin up around 400 pounds man! pure muscle, theyre pushing human maximum size and power. Skill is only one aspect of a fight man.. and str8 up, you cant grapple with a guy whose arm is stronger than both your arms and legs. I got my money on the mountain against the man.

  28. bvrasp says:

lol brian, nobody said the same weight, cuz the fact is, you cant GET that big without doing roids man, there are no MMA fighters that big.

  29. Amir says:

Speaking of wrestlers turned MMA fighters…did anyone ever see
Kimo vs. Bam Bam Bigelow at some low-profile cage fighting exhibition?lol.
If not …don’t read the rest of this…if so
Bam Bam looked all mean and tough like usual before the fight starts…as soon as they come towards each other, Kimo mounts him and just starts pounding away on Bigelow’s face who is helpless and whose only defense is flailing his arms trying to block the punches.
Of course, it was stopped by TKO…and an old, washed up Kimo was victorious against a man 3 times his size.

  30. Dennis says:

you think that’s funny. Wait until Mike Tyson steps into the ring with Cro Cop or Fedor! hahahahahah

  31. Dennis says:

I agree with you Brian, That’s about as far as I can take it. If one day Rampage shows up in a super hero costume holding a folding chair, I’m outta here!

  32. Dennis says:

I agree with you Brian, That’s about as far as I can take it. If one day Rampage shows up in a super hero costume with his posse, holding a folding chair, dancing to rap lyrics, I’m outta here!

  33. Brian says:

Got to comment. I’ve been on this site for about 3 hours today. Jesus…LOL. Ok, Mike Tyson would get knocked out by Liddell, Coutore, Jackson, Ortiz, even our big buddy Silvia (Sorry-but I had to prove a point). Unless, ofcourse, Tyson can use his teeth!

And I’ve taken steriods before. I was on them for a year+. Yes, I got huge. Yes, my tempor was a little off. I’m a passive type guy, but I just felt like knocking down walls. Say you can’t get the bathroom door open?? Steriods=Knocking down the door vs getting a freekin key. But also remember MUSCLES=OXYGEN=Less Stamina. Name me one champ that’s a Brick **** House?? Besides maybe Sherk and he’s a freak. Liddell, Silva, Silvia…all in good shape, but they don’t hit the weights TO HARD. It would take away from their entire skill level once they step inside the Octagon.

  34. Brian says:

Oh, I left out the best pound-for-pound guy GSP! He’s my 2nd fav fighter and he’s not really a brick **** house. He’s in good shape, but not built like the WWF guys some of you people are talking about. But he would outlast all of them and dance around the ring until they (WWF) start falling…

  35. Amir says:

    Gentlemen,

Right now I’m watching UFC Hits Volume 1 & 2 that I just got from my Netflix. These are the very first UFC fights, bareknuckle, no rules. LMFAO. This 450lbs. guy Yarborough (Sumo wrestler) is chewing gum while hes fighting. I recommend you all check out this compilation. My G-d, how far this sport has come.

  36. richard says:

all these rampage comments just make u look like a redneck

  37. R.J. St.Croix says:

hey amir i have a good one for you. i have the first 10 ufc PPV’s on VHS (LOL) i bought them from wal-mart about two years ago. they were in a $2.99 bin! i bought all ten then and there. it cost me just over 30 bucks for the whole deal. man that was a good day!!!

  38. bvrasp says:

lol i have every UFC event on dvd man, including the ultimate fight nights and tuf. Pride is harder to find but i have tons of it, even less abu dhabi, and even less pancrase. But my collection is growing everyday, i also have a big library of instructional videos, Vitor, Rutten, Gracie, they give some GREAT tips! but obviously you need a foundation before you can add to it.

  39. richard says:

hey bvrasp can u explain the rules to pancrase cuz i see some matches there and it doesnt look like there allowed full contact?

  40. Brian says:

I’d love to have ALL the UFCs on DVD. A guy on ebay was selling ever UFC w/o the cases for about $250. I would have bought them, but the guy only had like 6 total sells and he wanted a money order sent to him first. So I passed. If anyone runs along that kinda deal let me know. I’ve got probably 35-40 UFCs. Including the relativly hard to find UFC 13 and 14. UFC 13 is Ortiz’s first fight. He came in as an alternate and got beat by Guy Metzger. Later in his carreer he wooped that guy and started the Ortiz-Shamrock fuid. (ms)

  41. Dennis says:

I also would love to hear when they’re avaible on Ebay. Here’s another option, Blockbuster also sells used DVD’s, and I’ve been lobbying them heavily to handle the MMA fights, so they have started making some offerings, but have a long way to go.

Maybe if more people make the requests, they’ll source them out for us!

  42. bvrasp says:

i got all my MMA stuff off the internet, for the rules of pancrase, there are too many for me to mention, standing rules, on the ground rules, grabbing the gui, its endless lol

you can find all the rules here. Hope this helps

    http://www.pancrase.co.jp/en/rules/index.html

  43. Amir says:

BestBuy actually has a ridiculously large supply of UFC and Pride DVDs. I was shocked that they had so many, if your willing to buy them. Personally, Netflix is great for me and this compilation had so many fights that you wouldn’t see on Spike’s Unleashed channel. It actually had the first Ortiz/Metzger fight, Gracie/Kimo, plenty Frank Shamrock, Severn/Frye, Coleman/Frye, plenty of “Tank” and of course a young, unstoppable force to be reckoned with called Vitor… real classics. It was awesome and that was just Volume 1. Tonight I’ll watch volume 2…these have all the old fights plus only the best parts of the fights. I highly recommend

  44. R.J. St.Croix says:

i love going back and watching old fights. remember marco ruas. i used to hate that guy back in the day but now i go back and watch old fights and its like wow this guy was ahead of his time. i wonder what he’s up to now?

  45. richard says:

hey thanks for that link bvrasp

  46. b tree says:

Randy would be making a huge mistake. u saw what chuck did to him and it would only be worse against Sylvia. Sylvia is the best to ever live. the MAINE-iac will kill anyone n everyone.. all these haters dont like sylvia, but the fact of the matter is hes the champ n u r all chumps… when cotoure gets kocked out in the first minute of the first round u will get all ur hearts broken again… noone can match up to sylvia. period.

  47. R.J. St.Croix says:

i really hope to see the sylvia that b tree is talking about. but based on his last few fights i have a few doubts. saying no one can match up to sylvia is just crazy. he even said him self he’s not ready for guys like fedor and cro cop. sorry b tree but i think you might have to eat your words.

  48. richard says:

btree get the fu*ck out of here for u to say that means u aint no mma fan get real

  49. Amir says:

    Hey gentlemen,

I was pondering Liddell vs. Jardine, he’s one tough SOB, what do you guys think. I know he might look a little slow…but I was curious.
    He’s listed at 6’2, so size-wise he’s up there.
