Today brings in a first for MMA HQ. Today, we will be featuring our first “reader contributed” article. Loyal MMA HQ reader Brian contributed the following article to me for the upcoming UFC Fight Night card. I’m more than happy to welcome all user submitted content here at MMA HQ; in fact, I welcome it. If any of you would be interested in writing for MMA HQ, please email me and let me know. If you submit good regular content, I’d welcome you as a regular guest contributor to MMA HQ. If you enjoy Brian’s article, leave some comments and let him know. I’ll do my own personal preview writeup for the UFC Fight Night card myself sometime next week. So, without any further delay, I give you our first reader contributed article.

The UFC comes to cable TV again on January 25th from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Florida. The featured fights include Rashad Evans vs Sean Salmon and Spencer Fisher vs Hermes Franca.

Rashad Evans hasn't seen the octagon since knocking out Jason Lambert in the 2nd round of UFC 63. Sean Salmon, however, is making his UFC debut with a current record of 9-1. Salmon might have an edge in the submission game with 6 of his 9 wins coming by way of submission, but Evans is the better pure wrestler. Check out Salmon's personal blog where he writes a little about his life and his recently signed 3 fight deal with the UFC. With impressive wins over Jason Lambert and Stephan Bonnar, I'd have to give the edge in this fight to Evans.

The fight between Spencer Fisher and Hermes Franca could be the show stopper for those of us who love a good chess match. Spencer would like to keep this fight standing, especially after his TKO win over Dan Lazon in UFC 64. Franca, on the other hand, will be looking to clinch and take this fight to the ground. I predict Spencer will keep his win streak going with a split decision victory over Hermes Franca.

[Editors note: the winner of the Fisher vs Franca fight will face Sean Sherk for the UFC Lightweight title - Dr J]

The UFC Fight Night card also includes Heath Herring's debut in the UFC against Jake O'Brien. Many of you may have heard of Heath Herring because the 28 year old fighter has fought all over the world with organizations such as Pride, K-1, and now the UFC. Herring has felt the power of Cro Cop and Fedor while fighting for Pride, and while those fights ended in defeat for the "The Texas Crazy Horse", his antics and wild entrances (most notably his wild hair) won over many Japanese fans. I'm going out on a limb here... "The Texas Crazy Horse" opens his UFC career off on his back with a loss.

You can check out the complete card at UFC.com, which includes Dean Lister, Josh Burkman, and Ed "Short Fuse" Herman.

Hey Brian, I get to bust your cherry!

Got to disagree with you man, Crazy Horse will dominate!

The Fisher/Franco fight should be a good one, but the Muscle Shark will win in the end.

  2. Dennis says:

O, I forgot…. Rashard is another muscle-head without discipline, but he’s getting better.

  3. Fuzznutz says:

Agreed…The Texas Crazy Horse brings way to much to the table for O’brien.

  4. R.J. St.Croix says:

good job brian!!! and we should all thank the good doctor for giving us such an awesome site to look over every day. keep up the good work boys i cant wait to read more.and i have been waiting to hear something anything about a light weight title fight —>[Editors note: the winner of the Fisher vs Franca fight will face Sean Sherk for the UFC Lightweight title - Dr J] thanks again dr j. i know i could probably get my info from another site, but i like comming here and reading what the FANS have to say. it just seems much more real. everyone here like there favorites because thats who they like not because someone gave them money to write nice thing about someone. the “professional” media has sponsors and friends that sometimes may sway there vote. on a side note if you have the fight channel they have been showing old Meca world vale tudo events almost every night at about midnight eastern time. for those that dont know wanderlei, anderson, ninja, and some other notables fought there many moons ago. i will try to post some of the meca stuff some were on this big old internet thing i will let you all know when and where to find it so you can all share in my joy. lol sorry guys for the long post sometimes i got way to much to say lol!

  5. Brian says:

Thanks people and I know I went out on a TINY branch saying Hearing would loose, but look at how smart I’ll look if I’m right…LOL. I just got one of those “feelings” when it comes to this fight. What do you guys think is the reason for “the Texas Crazy Horse” making his debut on FREE TV and not on a PPV UFC???? I really don’t know, but I have some ideas. Maybe he’s not as good as he thinks he is. And it’s known (I’m pretty sure) that the UFC got Heath with their purchase of ????? fighting organization. I beleive Heath has had problems with UFC managment and it was speculated that they would NOT sign him or continue his old contract. They don’t have big plans for Hearing. I beleive they probably got him relativly cheap and will use him as a stepping stone for some of their better fights or fighters…Just my opinion.

  6. Amir says:

    Hey all,

Sorry to get off topic here…but is UFC 67 really only offering us 3 fights? I have to say, as excited as I am about seeing the anticipated debuts of Rampage and Mirko, they are asking the same price as other PPV but are olny offering 3 fights? not too happy about that. I can not find any information anywhere regarding add-on fights, it looks like that will be it. Speaking for myself, if they don’t add any decent fights to this undercard in the next few days, I’m simply not buying this thing and waiting for the YouTube release. Either that or they better lower the price. WTF Dana?

  7. Brian says:

No no. It will be like always. They will show at the very least 5 fights. Then they will fit in the fights that happened earlier that evening and fit them into OUR PPV time slot. That will probaly mean a total of 6-7 fights for your money. The other fights are probably TBO. (to-be-announced). If I find out the other fights, I’ll let you know (or DR. J) He’s always on top of everything.

  8. Brian says:

John Halverson (whoever in the heck that is) will be another fight on the UFC 67 card. His counterpart in the ring is TBA. And yes I noticed in the last comment I put TBO insted of TBA. So you can skim around the internet (Google it) and find out a little more before they officially announce it on the UFC website, etc.

  9. alen says:

This is the best site that I could find out there cause it tells you how much the fighters make and there is info here before UFC and Pride post it.

  10. R.J. St.Croix says:

hey alen you can find out all the stuff you want on other sites. but why would you your in the right place. this is were the real fans come. and dr j i’m thinking the problem i’ve been having with posting on your site is comming from my end because now i cant email. i tryed to send you my addy twice and it failed so i’m going to just give it to you on here (please people dont send me spam and other crap) hopefully i’ll will get it figured out soon. my email addy is rj102078 at hotmail dot com.

  11. Dr J says:

    @ RJ

Thanks for your info man. I haven’t been able to figure out why you are having troubles leaving comments on just that one post yet, sorry.

  12. Dennis says:

    Hey Dr. J.
Are the times posted accurate? Just wondering because if so, RJ posted at 2am this morning!

  13. Dr J says:

    @Dennis

Yeah the times are correct. But you got to remember, not everyone is here in the US timezones.

  14. R.J. St.Croix says:

yeah the time is right i’m mostly on at 3am eastern time (new york time) thats when i get home from work. the up side is the fight channel shows a lot of mma real late at night.

  15. R.J. St.Croix says:

last night i watched bj penn vs. gomi at rumble on the rock 4. that was a good fight. it had some good stand up moments some nice ju jitsu work (of course its penn) and bj submitted him about half way through the third round (rear naked) it was a good fight.

  16. John Crockett says:

Word around the corner is that Jake “Irish” O’ Brien is the future of the UFC heavyweight division, since everyone is aging. I really don’t know who’s going to win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Irish knocked out Herring. Remember UFC 63, Jens Pulver was knocked out by Joe Lauzon. Herring still has the power, and the skills to compete on a tough level, but I think fighting in the UFC for the first time will be a distraction.

  17. J. Crockett says:

Brian, last month you picked Cruz over Arlovski. Why would you do something like that? I know Herb Dean screwed things up, but come on…Cruz over Arlovski. Anyways, I think you’re still good in predicting winners so I want your insights on the Lister vs. Marquardt match.
