Today's Mixed Martial Arts News and Analysis Headquarters

Here are the official weights from today’s UFC weigh-ins. A few things of note, Chris Price was 7 pounds overweight. I don’t know how that happens. Did he not know the limit was 185? He’s only had several months to get down to that weight. Also, how about Ross Pointon weighing in a pound and a half light! I guess that comment I made about his beer belly doesn’t “hold any weight” anymore (sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Rashad Evans (205.5) vs Sean Salmon (206)
Heath Herring (250) vs Jake O’Brien (234.5)
Hermes Franca (155) vs Spencer Fisher (154.5)
Dean Lister (185) vs Nate Marquardt (185.5)
Chad Reiner (171) vs Josh Burkman (171)
Ed Herman (186) vs Chris Price (192)*
Clay Guida (154) vs Din Thomas (154.5)
Ross Pointon (168.5) vs Rich Clementi (169.5)

* Herman agreed to face Price despite the Indiana fighter being seven pounds over the middleweight limit of 185 pounds. When Price thanked Herman for still agreeing to fight, “Short Fuse” responded, “You weren’t getting off that easy.” Source: UFC.com

    YO DR J? HOW FAR OF A LEE WAY DO U GET FROM THE ACTUAL WEIGHT I SEE SOME FIGHTERS UNDER BUT YOU CANT BE OVER??????????????

  2. bvrasp says:

    patrick, the middleweight division is from 172-186, you allowed to be 1 pound over the maximum for that division, why 172? because a welterweight is allowed to be 171, at 172 youve hit the next division.

  3. Dr J says:

    @Patrick (and BVRASP

    The middleweight division is technically from 171 – 185. You are allowed to be up to 1 pound overweight for non-title fights. Title fights you are not allowed any leeway. You can always be under, but only up to 1 pound over for non-title fights.

  4. bvrasp says:

    Dr. J your right about the title match thing, but technically, 171 is still welter, so it would be 172-186, for non title match

  5. Dr J says:

    @BVRASP,

    I see what you are saying but technically the weight divions starts at 171, not 172. You can be 171 and still fight in the middleweight division, while if you were 170, you would have to fight welterweight.

  6. PATRICK says:

    HEY DR J GIMMIE UR OPINION…..
    WHAT DO U THINK ABOUT THESE HEAVYWEIGHTS
    Heath Herring , Jake O’Brien, SYLVIA,COUTURE,ANDREI,CROCOP, LIKE GIVE ME UR RANKING ON THESE BOYS AND WHAT U THINK THEY CAN DO AND WHO COULD BEAT WHO JUST CURIOUS???

  7. Dr J says:

    @PATRICK,

    Personally, strictly from the list you gave, I would rank those fighters like this:

    1. Cro Cop
    2. Sylvia
    3. Herring
    4. Arlovski
    5. Couture
    6. O’Brien

    I think Cro Cop is easily the top of that class. For all the crap he takes, Tim Sylvia is still a very good fighter and I would give him the #2 spot. After Herring gets back and fights more regularly (he has been off for quite a while) if he can regain the skills he had a few years back he could be your #2 guy.

    I can’t put Arlovski any higher, simply because I have to base my judgment on his last 4-5 fights, and let’s be honest, he hasn’t looked good at all.

    Couture is good, but is, of course, old at this point and I’m not sure if he can hang in the heavyweight division any more.

  8. PATRICK says:

    HEY DR J ONE MORE QUESTION…. DO U THINK IN UR MIND THAT ANYONE RIGHT NOW CAN TAKE GSP…. AFTER SEEING HIM FIGHT MATT I WAS LIKE WOW???PS…. DO U KNOW OR DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THOSE TATOOS ON HIS CHEST MEAN?

  9. Dr J says:

    @PATRICK,

    I think that any fighter can be beaten at any time. That’s the beauty of MMA. But, I do think that right now Georges St. Pierre is clearly the best welterweight the UFC has to offer. Matt Hughes can challenge him, but Matt Hughes doesn’t have the complete skill set that GSP has, and that is why we saw St. Pierre handle him so easily last time.

    Matt Serra doesn’t stand a chance against GSP. A matchup with Diego Sanchez will be interesting, but I still think GSP takes that fight easily due to experience.

    And no, I have no idea what those tattoos stand for on his chest.

  10. bvrasp says:

    Dr. J really?? a guy at 171 can fight at middleweight?? hmm.. i dunno about that.. do you know that for a fact?

    also, i like that you dont hate on Sylvia, guys dont like him.. but look at what hes accomplished. Even if the heavyweight division is kinda short on talent, over the years hes beaten some GREAT fighters! i applaud Tim Sylvia, really, i hope he beats crocop! jus to shut up the haters hehe

  11. R.J. St.Croix says:

    its not that i totally HATE tim sylvia i just think he lost the drive to be the best. right now he can technically say he’s the best just because he’s the champ. he doesnt “fight” any more he just go through the motions and collects his cash. i’ve said befor that the fan should support the sport by buying p.p.v’s and going to shows that way they will put together better shows. but on the flip side the fighters should support the fans by giving us good fights and making us feel like we spent our hard earned money on something worthwhile. tim sylvia has stopped trying to give us great fights and for that i lost some respect for him as a fighter.

  12. bvrasp says:

    i see wat your saying RJ, i dont really agree, but i can see where your comin from. I dont think its the fighters responsibility to be an entertainer, its his job to win fights, its the organizations job to entertain us, the fans. Like can you blame Obrien for laying on top of Herring the other night? the guys a wrestler, he exploited Herrings weak ground game and got the win. I would have liked to see him do more work from the top, he cut him with an elbow, if he threw some more, he might have got a stoppage. It would have been more entertaining for sure, but he was dedicating both his arms and legs to holding herring down, i guess he felt that it would be a gamble to try and strike. He took the safe route, i respect fighters for winning fights, its not all a physical thing, its a mental contest aswell. Holding a guy down, taking him out of his game, making him feel helpless, it really takes the wind out of your sails, to the point it can actually make the guy quit! hes thinking why bother when hes just gonna hold me down, he starts to believe that he cant stop the other guy from holding him down.

    you feel me?

  13. R.J. St.Croix says:

    @bvrasp

    i hear what your saying and i agree. the only reason i say the fighters responsibility to entertain us is because we pay to see them fight and if we dont like a fighter because he’s boring or doesnt try, then there no use in watching him fight and if we dont watch him fight why would the organization pay him to fight. i’m just saying i would have a lot more respect for sylvia watching him lose in an all out slug fest then win another munson/sylvia. if sylvia vs munson was the only head liner fight at ufc 65 i would have felt very ripped off. a heavy weight championship fight should be able to carry a p.p.v on its own but its not likely we will see that at any time soon as long as sylvia is champ. unless of course you bring randy couture out of retirement to fight him lol.

  14. bvrasp says:

    yea your right RJ, its all about money, but really, they dont pay guys more for losing even if it IS a slugfest. The big bucks and the big endorsements go to the champ, i think fighters are looking out for their own best interests in that regard, and rightly so. The organization has to set up good matches! well matched fighters who will make for an exciting fight, if the division is lacking, get more talent, which is what theyre doing, its not the fighters fault.

    If tim sylvia layed on top of crocop for 5 rounds and pulled out a win, i would be impressed!! it may not be exciting, but its still entertaining to me hehe.

    I wish Genki Sudo came back to fight at the UFC lightweight division, hes a showman, but also hes an incredibly talented fighter! one things for sure, nobodys ready for what genki brings to the game.

    hes still retired isnt he?? heh

  15. richard says:

    u guys know who else is a awesome lightweight im not sure on his name but i think its charles bennet and he does this thing were he sits on top of the ring or cage to get the other guy worked up.I also think spencer fisher always puts on a good show and i didnt expect him to lose to hermes especially not by strikes standing
