This past week, news came out that Chuck Liddell would make his next title defense at UFC 71, but who his opponent would be was unknown.
When Quinton Jackson’s WFA contract was purchased by the UFC, we knew that Jackson was signed through July for two fights. Jackson and his manager have insisted that they would not fight Chuck Liddell during either of those fights and that they wanted at least two warmup fights before a title match against Liddell.
Well, it appears that the UFC must have loosened the wallet somewhat and made an enticing offer for Jackson to fight Liddell before his contract is up. The current word circulating is that Liddell vs. Jackson will take place this May at UFC 71. Of course, no official UFC announcement has been made, but several reliable sources are confirming that this fight has been verbally agreed to by both camps.
Most fans were wondering what was next for Chuck after his easy defeat of Renato Sobral and Tito Ortiz. It was widely assumed that Forest Griffin would get the next title shot, but his loss to Keith Jardine derailed those plans for the UFC. Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine were both possibilites for Liddell’s next opponent, but personally I don’t believe either of those fighters is ready for a title shot; and I have a feeling that Joe Silva, the UFC matchmaker, feels the same way.
Let’s hope that Jackson is ready for this title shot, and he is free of the “nerves” and ring-rust we saw in his UFC debut against Marvin Eastman.

Before you start calling someone stupid check before you talk/write. There are 4 weight classes in Pride FC.
Heavyweight (more than 93 kg / 205 lb)
Middleweight (less than or equal to 93 kg / 205 lb)
Welterweight (less than or equal to 83 kg / 183 lb)
Lightweight (less than or equal to 73 kg / 161 lb)
Last time I checked Henderson holds the Middle and Welter weight class belts. Hughes would be considered a Welterweight and BJ Penn has fought at Welterweight and Lightweight before. I was talking about the a Pride fighter in Henderson so the Pride weight classes come into play.

Fighters fight above and below their weight all the time. BJ Penn just fought at 155 lbs but is moving up to 170 lbs. He’s even fought at 205 lbs before. Likewise Hughes can move up 15 lbs or drop 10 lbs.

I haven’t been on this thread in long time, but I think you hit the nail right on the head. I am one of the biggest Rampage fans too and felt like I was the only person in the crowd @ UFC 71 cheering for him. I think he just might be the best damn thing to happen to the sport thanks to his ability and charisma. I just hope he lives up to all the ability and reaches his utmost potential by staying focused and takes the opportunity he’s been given to start again. On another note…why is everyone cursing and fighting on this thread?
and just to clear things up a bit. the weight classes are different from pride to ufc. pride does not have a lightheavy weight div. so there middle weight is 205lbs. and welter is 183lbs. and thats why they introduced Dan Henderson as the lightheavy weight and middle weight title holder when he was in the cage at the Liddell/Jackson fight. it is not likely you would see Hughes fight Henderson as far as i know Hughes has never jumped up to middle weight and i couldnt see him doing it now. Henderson(6’1″ 200lbs.) is pretty big compared to Hughes(5’9″ 170lbs.) do you think Matt Hughes could hang with Wanderlei, i doubt it but Henderson went 15min. with him the first time and beat him the second time.

Theres been a lot of talk lately about Shogun. Personally i do not think he will live up to the hype like quinton jackson did. I think he will destroy his first opponent but then when the ufc puts him against a tougher opponent he will lose because of his lack of octagon experience. I know he is good but CHUCK IS BETTER!
another reason why i say this is because if you watch his highlights you see tons of kicks to the head when the opponent is down. Not gonna happen in the ufc.

He did fight but it wasn’t an MMA fight. While it was supposed to be, about an hour before the match they changed the rules so there were no kicks allowed and no ground work. Only strikes and strikes from the clinch.
It was really just a modified boxing match.
